When Women Interfere : Studies in the Role of Women in Herodotus' Histories /

: Hazewindus, M.W. When Women Interfere. Studies in the Role of Women in Herodotus' Histories. 2004 In his Histories, Herodotus presents several short stories that seem at odds with the main story and that are therefore sometimes dismissed as mere anecdotes. In this book, Dr. Hazewindus analyzes five of such short stories in order to establish their function in the work as a whole. In these short stories women play important roles. The author shows that these roles exhibit a pattern: women unexpectedly change from passive, silent characters into active, leading people who at times take a bloody revenge when they feel wronged. Women here turn the wheel of history. When the main story is resumed, they disappear again into the background. Nevertheless, the women stories give a unique colour to the Histories, and a proper understanding of them enriches our interpretation of Herodotus' work.

Gender and communication in Euripides' plays : between song and silence /

: The prominent role of women in Greek drama has always fascinated readers. This book proposes that women in Euripides' plays communicate in ways constructed by the tragic genre itself as 'female.' Yet these women's words are surprisingly not uniformly dangerous or excessively emotional, as has traditionally been thought. Rather, Euripides' women resort to 'female' ways of talking in order to enable others to understand them and their unique point-of-view. Aspects of women's speech-song, silence and secret-keeping as female verbal genres, and the challenges of speaking out of place-contribute to Euripides' portrayal of women as different from men. Originating in a culture where putting women under scrutiny was part of daily life, Euripides' tragedies dramatise women's constant struggle to control language.

Ancient stepmothers : myth, misogyny, and reality /

: Ancient Stepmothers is the first full-length study of the stepmother in Graeco-Roman antiquity. Several perspectives are covered: literary, historical and sociological, the last-mentioned making use of comparative material from modern studies of stepfamilies. The portrayal of the stepmother in myth and literature is thoroughly explored. The historical background in Athens and Rome is examined with a view to determining the relationship between fiction and real life. The book makes an important contribution to the study of both literary history and family relationships: in particular, it sheds light on attitudes to women, the portrayal of the stepmother being an outstanding illustration of misogynistic prejudice. It will also interest sociologists wishing to place studies of the contemporary stepfamily in a wider historical context: for this reason, all Greek and Latin is translated into English.

The death of the maiden in classical Athens /

: This study examines the death of maidens in classical Athens, combining the study of Attic funerary iconography with research on classical Attic maiden burials, funerary inscriptions, tragic plays, as well as the relevant Attic myths. The iconography of funerary reliefs focuses on the idealised image of the deceased maiden, as well as the powerful bonds of love and kinship that unite her with the members of her family, whereas the iconography of vases emphasises the premature death of the maiden, the pain of loss and mourning felt by her family, as well as the observance of the indispensable funerary rites concerning her burial and 'tomb cult'.

The Gorgon's severed head : studies in Alcestis, Electra, and Phoenissae /

: The Gorgon's Severed Head looks at three plays of Euripides, one early, one middle and one late in his career. Innovations in genre, in the use of the traditional stories, in the representation of women and of gender issues are present at every period. In all three plays characters are depicted creating themselves and each other. Chapter One on Alcestis looks at the artistry of the two main characters and is especially concerned with finding a role for Admetus, the play's most serious problem. The second chapter treats the physical displacement of the myth in Euripides' version of the Electra-Orestes story. A last section approaches the layers of time and space in Phoenissae .
