A Grammar of Khortha /
:
Khortha is an Eastern Indo-Aryan language spoken in Jharkhand, India. Netra P. Paudyal provides an in-depth analysis of Khortha grammar based on the data recorded during his field trips, elicited data, and sentences culled from printed literature. Alongside, it includes a fully glossed text, a comparative wordlist of lexical items from three different varieties of this language and verb paradigms, making it of great interest and value to linguists and typologists. Additionally, it highlights Khortha's influence from Munda and other Indo-Aryan languages, with notable lexical borrowings, particularly from Santali. This comprehensive study makes a significant contribution to understanding the linguistic landscape of South Asia.

The Emergence of Pragmatic Markers from Chinese Compounds in Chinese, Japanese and Korean /
:
The Emergence of Pragmatic Markers from Chinese Compounds in Chinese, Japanese and Korean offers a new perspective on the evolution of pragmatic markers in language contact and grammaticalization, drawing on data-driven and diachronic studies of Chinese compounds. All the contributors to this volume address the issue of whether compounds of Chinese origin have grammaticalized into discourse markers or pragmatic markers from their earlier lexical forms, either similarly across these languages or in distinct, language-specific ways. The findings presented in this volume suggest that the written-contact-based grammaticalization in these East Asian languages is fundamentally different from the spoken-contact-based grammaticalization reported in many previous studies.

Word-Prosodic Systems of Japonic Languages /
:
How diverse can a single language family's prosody be? Word-Prosodic Systems of Japonic Languages answers this by offering the first-ever comparative overview in English of the highly diverse word-prosodic systems of the Japonic languages. Through accessible descriptions couched in a unified framework, this volume dismantles long-standing barriers in a field whose publications are almost exclusively in Japanese and whose descriptive tradition is shaped by idiosyncratic terminology and theory. Covering nine Japanese and eight Ryukyuan varieties, and featuring the definitive typological introduction to Japonic prosody, the book reveals surprising typological facts-such as systems that require positing novel prosodic units. It is essential reading for linguists interested in prosody, typology, and the often-overlooked diversity of East Asian languages.

Reconstructing Erpenius' Library : The First Collection of Oriental Manuscripts at Cambridge University Library /
:
This volume is the first comprehensive study of one of the most important collections of oriental manuscripts in early modern Europe which belonged to Thomas Erpenius (d. 1624), the renowned Dutch Arabist, orientalist and the first Chair of Arabic Studies at Leiden University. It reconstructs his personal library which was the center of scholarly debates for centuries, full of rare and sometimes unique materials. Widely known as a rich source of Muslim literature and Asian languages, the collection was purchased by George Villiers, the 1st Duke of Buckingham (d. 1628) and ultimately donated by his widow, Katherine Villiers, to Cambridge University Library in June 1632. This volume provides detail on Erpenius' life and career, his manuscript collections and their reception and preservation in Cambridge. Furthermore, the author challenges the idea of European orientalism by redefining the role of Erpenius in in shaping academic study of the Orient and 'organic' orientalism in the West.

L'hymnaire manichéen chinois Xiabuzan (Xia bu zan) à l'usage des auditeurs : un manuscrit trouvé à Dunhuang /
:
L'Hymnaire manichéen chinois presents a collection of twenty-five hymns that were intended for the Manichean religious practice of the class of Auditors. The scroll, which came to light in the early twentieth century in the province of Dunhuang (modern Ganzu) after lying buried for around twelve centuries, contains several hymns transcribed from a variety of languages that were current in Central Asia during the epoch of its redaction. This translation provides a new perspective on the Religion of Light as it was adopted in China, and on the wide reach of the message of the Iranian prophet Mani (216-276) that aimed at universal scope and was meant to unite people from all parts of the world, of whatever origin, language and history.
