Which Latin adjectives and adverbs allow for comparative and superlative forms, and which ones do not? Based on extensive data collection, this book aims to provide today's readers of Latin with some objective criteria for determining the answer to this question.
This book focuses on one of the basic - yet still rather neglected in Latin linguistics- grammatical categories: comparison of adjectives and adverbs. Which Latin adjectives and adverbs allow for comparative and superlative forms, and which ones do not? This question may seem trivial to those working with modern languages but is not at all trivial in the case of a dead language such as Latin that has no native speakers and a limited corpus of written texts. Based on extensive data collection, the book aims to provide today's readers of Latin with some objective criteria for determining the answer.

Historically, all societies have used comparison to analyze cultural difference through the interaction of religion, power, and translation. When comparison is a self-reflective practice, it can be seen as a form of comparatism. Many scholars are concerned in one way or another with the practice and methods of comparison, and the need for a cognitively robust relativism is an integral part of a mature historical self-placement. This volume looks at how different theories and practices of writing and interpretation have developed at different times in different cultures and reconsiders the specificities of modern comparative approaches within a variety of comparative moments. The idea is to reconsider the specificities, the obstacles, and the possibilities of modern comparative approaches in history and anthropology through a variety of earlier and parallel comparative horizons. Particular attention is given to the exceptional role of Athens and Jerusalem in shaping the Western understanding of cultural difference.

The authors of this book reconstruct the philosophical, methodological and theoretical assumptions of non-Marxian historical materialism, a theory of historical process authored by Leszek Nowak (1943-2009), a co-founder of the Poznań School of Methodology. In the first part of the book, philosophical assumptions of this theory are compared with the concepts of Robert Nozick, Immanuel Wallerstein, André Gunder Frank and analytical Marxism. In the second part, non-Marxian historical materialism is compared with the concepts of Eva Etzioni-Halevy, Andrzej Falkiewicz, Robert Michels, Vilfredo Pareto, Theda Skocpol and Karl August Wittfogel.

Work and Smell : Literature in Comparison /

Literature responds and contributes to the ways in which societies imagine their condition in general and economic life in particular. However, the weighty contribution made by smell motifs to the literary evaluation of working lives has remained underexplored. Work-related smells play an important role in contexts of social inclusion and exclusion, and they can impact strongly on the scope and limits for the fulfillment of needs at work and its surroundings. As emotionally powerful devices, olfactory motifs are also used imaginatively to counter culturally habitualised views on work. The book explores four issues which underpin the nexus of smell and work in literature: the social othering of smelly workers, a sense of social belonging mediated by smell, negative health effects of smelly work environments, and work-related smell in ambivalent contexts of sensual indulgence. The chapters cover European, American and Asian texts and also open up new perspectives for comparative studies.

Animate Decoration in the Burial Chamber: A Comparison of Funerary Models and Wall Scenes /

The exclusion of animate beings from the scenes displayed on the walls of Old Kingdom burial chambers has long been understood as a means to protect the deceased from any potential harm the figures might pose. Funerary models likewise depict people and animals from everyday life, yet they were included in burial chambers for a more expansive time period. This paper raises this apparent contradiction and conducts a comparative analysis of the two artistic media in order to highlight the unique properties and role of the funerary model. It is here proposed that during a time of instability, the model offered a more practical safeguard for the tomb owner’s eternal sustenance and so it became the preferred mode of representation for the burial chamber. doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.5913/jarce.56.2020.a005

Pesher and hypomnema : a comparison of two commentary collections from the Hellenistic-Roman period /

In Pesher and Hypomnema Pieter B. Hartog compares ancient Jewish commentaries on the Hebrew Bible with papyrus commentaries on the Iliad . Hartog shows that members of the movement which produced and preserved the Dead Sea Scrolls adopted classical commentary writing and adapted it to their own needs. The connection between the Qumran Pesharim and Hypomnemata on the Iliad resulted from exchanges of scholarly knowledge across Hellenistic-Roman Egypt and Palestine. Analysing the effects of these knowledge exchanges, Pesher and Hypomnema demonstrates that members of the Qumran movement were thoroughly embedded within their Hellenistic and Roman environment.
