The Treaties of Carlowitz (1699) : a Antecedents, Course and Consequences /

: The Treaties of Carlowitz (1699) includes recent studies on the Lega Sacra War of 1683-1699 against the Ottoman Empire, the Peace treaties of Carlowitz (1699), and on the general impact of the conflict upon Modern Europe and the Balkans. With its contributions written by well-known international specialists in the field, the volume demonstrates that sometimes important conflicts tend to be forgotten with time, overshadowed by more spectacular wars, peace congresses or diplomatic alliances. The "Long War" of 1683-1699 is a case in point. By re-thinking and re-writing the history of the conflict and the subsequent peacemaking between a Christian alliance and the Ottoman state at the end of the 17th century, new perspectives, stretching into the present era, for the history of Europe, the Balkans and the Near East are brought into discussion. Arts-Based Research and the Practice of Freedom in Education : Reflections from a Doctoral Course /

: Arts-Based Research and the Practice of Freedom in Education advocates for the inclusion of arts-based research in doctoral education programs and, indeed, in educational programs at all levels. The doing of art to investigate ideas, situations, and experiences embraces bell hooks' concept of education as the practice of freedom, a practice in which everyone can learn and every voice counts. Through the use of photography, collage, painting, sculpture, textile arts and dance, 10 current and former doctoral students who had enrolled in an arts-based research course show and write about how arts-based methods enriched their educational experiences, celebrated their wholeness by dissolving the barriers between their scholar-artist-teacher-activist selves, and affirmed the inner-artist even in those who doubted they had one. Furthermore, their work establishes that arts-based research can reveal dimensions of experience that elude traditional research methods. Contributors are: Michael Alston, Kelly Bare, Shawn F. Brown, Nicholas Catino, Christopher Colón, Abby C. Emerson, Gene Fellner, Francie Johnson, Rendón Ochoa, Mariatere Tapias and Natalie Willens.

The Sons of God in Genesis 6:1-4 : Analysis and History of Exegesis /

: In The Sons of God in Genesis 6:1-4 , Jaap Doedens offers an overview of the history of exegesis of the enigmatic text about the 'sons of God', the 'daughters of men', and the 'giants'. First, he analyzes the text of Gen 6:1-4. Subsequently, he tracks the different exegetical proposals from the earliest exegesis until those of modern times. He further provides the reader with an evaluation of the meaning of the expression 'sons of God' in the Old Testament and the Ancient Near East. In the last chapter, he concentrates on the message and function of Gen 6:1-4. This volume comprehensively gathers ancient and modern exegetical attempts, providing the means for an ongoing dialogue about this essentially complex and elusive passage.

The trinitarian theology of Hilary of Poitiers /

: When Hilary of Poitiers was exiled from his native Poitiers in Gaul to Cappadocia, his entire theological sensibility changed. The Latin bishop, schooled in the tradition of Tertullian and Novatian, became a full-throated participant in the Trinitarian controversies of his time. This book offers a new reading of Hilary's Trinitarian theology that takes into account the historical context of Hilary's thought. It first examines this context and the course of Hilary's engagement with his Homoian opponents. It then turns to the key themes of Hilary's theology as he worked them out in that context. The result is a work that not only helps clarify Hilary's theology, but that offers new insight into the Trinitarian controversies as a whole.
