Histories of the Middle East studies in Middle Eastern society, economy and law in honor of A.L. Udovitch /

: For four decades Abraham L. Udovitch has been a leading scholar of the medieval Islamic world, its economic institutions, social structures, and legal theory and practice. In pursuing his quest to understand and explain the complex phenomena that these broad rubrics entail, he has published widely, collaborated internationally with other leading scholars of the Middle East and medieval history, and most saliently for the purposes of this volume, taught several cohorts of students at Princeton University. This volume is therefore dedicated to his intellectual legacy from a uniquely revealing angle: the current work of his former students. The papers in this volume range chronologically from the period preceding the rise of Islam in Arabia to the Mamluk era, geographically from the Western Mediterranean to the Western Indian Ocean and thematically from the political negotiations of Christian and Islamic Mediterranean sovereigns to the historiography of Western Indian Ocean port cities.

Between Memory and Power : The Syrian space under the late Umayyads and early Abbasids (c. 72-193/692-809) /

: Between Memory and Power intends to demonstrate that a robust culture of historical writing existed in 2nd/8th century Syria, and to offer new methodological approaches to access this now lost history, torn between memory and oblivion. By studying the making of Umayyad heroes or Abbasid origins-myths, this book aims to reveal the successive meanings granted to Syrian history, and to identify the various layers of historical writing and rewriting during the first centuries of Islam. Taken together, these elements make possible a history of meanings of the very space of Syria, articulated around power and its expression, which grants a clear coherence to the period, extending well beyond the dynastic caesura of 132/750.

Ibn al-ʿArabī's Kitāb Fuṣūṣ al-Ḥikam wa-Khuṣūṣ al-Kalim : Edition Based on the Earliest Extant Manuscript /

: Although the exemplar of the Fuṣūṣ al-ḥikam has mysteriously disappeared shortly after its composition, the earliest copy in al-Qūnawī's hand has survived. Having been collated with the orginal, read in front of Ibn al-ʿArabī, and signed by him, it stands as the vetustissimus and optimus. This edition is established on its reading and is checked against ʿAfīfī's classic. Besides a fully vocalized text, it provides an appended facsimile of the manuscript. The introductory section is the first comprehensive study that tracks the whole story of the manuscript and attempts to identify possible scattered traces of the lost original. It reviews attitudes towards the text, as well as a century of scholarly research on it, and illustrates key concepts of the Master's doctrine to help contextualize the book contents.

منح مولانا البَارِي في مناقب أَبِي القَاسمِ السَّكَنْدَرِيِّ القَبَّارِيِّ تحقيق ودراسة : [Mīnah Mawlānā al-Bārī fī Manāqib Abī al-Qāsim al-Sakandarī al-Qabbārī: Edition and Study]...

Nāṣir al-Dīn b. al-Munīr was a loyal and sincere student of Abī al-Qāsim al-Qabbārī. He recorded the details of al-Qabbārī's life to serve as practical applications of the teachings of the Qur'ān and the Sunnah- without innovation. Al-Qabbārī was precise in both speech and action, meticulous in distinguishing between the lawful (ḥalāl) and the unlawful (ḥarām), and cautious about allowing any food or drink into his body except that is earned in a ḥalāl ways . He was vigilant in his dealings with people, ensuring that he did not harm or hurt anyone, even in the slightest way. Ibn al-Munīr was keen to highlight this in the work he wrote, as a firsthand witness to these actions, without flattering his teacher or exaggerating his love for him.

The history of the Qurʾān.

: This first complete translation of Theodor Nöldeke's The History of the Qurʾān offers a foundational work of modern Qurʾānic studies to the English-speaking public. Nöldeke's original publication, as revised and expanded over nearly three quarters of a century by his scholarly successors, Friedrich Schwally, Gotthelf Bergsträsser and Otto Pretzl, remains an indispensable resource for any scholarly work on the text of the Qurʾān. Nöldeke's segmentation of the surahs into three Meccan periods and a Medinan one has shaped all subsequent discussions of the chronology of the Qurʾān. The revisions and expansions of Nöldeke's initial discussions of the orthography and variant readings of the text have found a new audience among those contemporary scholars who seek to create a more sophisticated understanding of the Qurʾān's textual development.

Opium, Henbane and Hashish: What do the pre-modern Arabic-Islamic sources say about them? This book examines all aspects of use and abuse: Use in classical Arabic medicine, use as poisons, the juridical discourse on their use and their abuse as intoxicants. Furthermore, the monographs on narcotics that were written from the 13th century onwards are examined and the question of a premodern understanding of addiction is pursued. The period from 1100 to 1800 reveals trends in drug consumption, numerous, changing legal positions can be placed side by side and a multifaceted picture of drug users in their living environments emerges.

Al-Maqrīzī's al-Ḫabar ʿan al-bašar : Vol. V, Section 6: The Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Franks, and the Goths /

: This volume contains the edition and translation of the chapter of al-Maqrīzī's al-Ḫabar ʿan al-bašar dealing with Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Franks, and Goths. This chapter is, for the most part, an almost exact reproduction of Ibn Ḫaldūn's Kitāb al-ʿIbar , from which al-Maqrīzī derived material from many other sources, including prominent Christian sources such as Kitāb Hurūšiyūš , Ibn al-ʿAmīd's History , and works by Muslim historians like Ibn al-Aṯīr's Kāmil. Therefore, this chapter of al-Ḫabar ʿan al-bašar is a continuation of the previous Arabic historiographical tradition, in which European history is integrated into world history through the combination of Christian and Islamic sources.

The Character of David in Judaism, Christianity and Islam : Warrior, Poet, Prophet and King /

: King David if one of the most central figures in all of the major monotheistic traditions. He generally connotes the heroic past of the (more imagined than real) ancient Israelite empire and is associated with messianic hopes for the future. Nevertheless, his richly ambivalent and fascinating literary portrayal in the Hebrew Bible is one of the most complex of all biblical characters. This volume aims at taking a new, critical look at the process of biblical creation and subsequent exegetical transformation of the character of David and his attributed literary composition (the Psalms), with particular emphasis put on the multilateral fertilization and cross-cultural interchanges among Jews, Christians and Muslims.
