Die Novelle als ästhetisch innovative Problematisierung des Exemplums hat ihren Ursprung in der romanischen Welt, in Boccaccios Decameron . Die aus unterschiedlichen, antiken, orientalischen und mittelalterlichen Quellen stammenden Kurzerzählungen erhalten durch ihre Einbettung in die komplexe Architektur des Decameron eine Sinnoffenheit und Mehrdeutigkeit, die durch das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen der durch den Rahmen suggerierten Ordnung und den widersprüchlichen Deutungsmöglichkeiten der Einzelnovellen prägnant zum Vorschein kommt. Von hier aus hat sich die Novelle in allen europäischen Literaturen verbreitet. Das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Kontingenz des Erzählten und Prägnanz des Erzählens, Zufall und Geistesgegenwart, Exemplarität und Ambiguisierung, Singularität und Pluralisierung wurde im Rahmen eines Romanistischen Kolloquiums, dessen Ergebnisse der vorliegende Band dokumentiert, durch die Untersuchung zentraler ausgewählter Autoren und Korpora der novellistischen Tradition in der Romania sichtbar gemacht.
