In seltenen Fällen übernehmen es jene, die Geschichte machen, selbst, über Jahrzehnte ihr Leben und ihre Zeit zu dokumentieren. Die weitgehend erhaltene Korrespondenz zwischen dem Philosophen Alexius Meinong (1853-1920) und dem Musikwissenschaftler Guido Adler (1855-1941) ist ein solcher Glücksfall. Sie spiegelt die Lebensgeschichte der beiden Freunde im Kontext der Gesamtgeschichte. Der umfangreiche Briefwechsel ist aber weit mehr als eine eindrucksvolle Schilderung des bloß persönlichen Werdeganges von Meinong und Adler. Private und politische Intrigen, philosophische Schulenkämpfe, Berufungsdebatten, wie sie aus Akten- und Archivmaterial unvergleichlich weniger lebendig hervorgehen, erscheinen ebenso thematisiert wie wissenschaftliche Fragen. Denn eine Stütze der Freundschaft war das große Interesse, welches die beiden dem Fach des anderen entgegenbrachten - Vorbedingung für ein erfolgreiches Streben nach Interdisziplinarität.

Muntakhab-i risālāt-i Ṣafāʾ al-Ḥaqq /

Ṣafāʾ al-Ḥaqq (1879-1962) is the artist's name of an Iranian Kurd whose family had moved from Kurdistan to Hamadan when he was still a child. His father was a respected businessman and a follower of the ideas of Shaykh Aḥmad Aḥsāʾī (d. 1241/1826). Though well-educated, having studied traditional and herbal medicine and animal husbandry, as an adolescent Ṣafāʾ al-Haqq spent a lot of time in his father's business in the bazaar. Due to his convictions, his father lost his livelyhood and Ṣafāʾ al-Ḥaqq started travelling. He spent several years in India, where he worked in a British hospital in Bombay. He then returned to Hamadan, where he settled as a physician. As a poet Ṣafāʾ al-Ḥaqq wrote in the Hindī style. He was an amateur musicologist as well as an accomplished calligrapher. This volume contains his autobiography, a treatise on animal husbandry, and two further treatises on various aspects of Shaykhism and music.

Henry George Farmer and the First International Congress of Arab Music (Cairo 1932) /

Henry George Farmer (1882-1965) was a pioneering musicologist who specialized in Arab music. In 1932, he participated in the First International Congress of Arab Music in Cairo, during which he maintained a journal recording his daily activities, interactions with fellow delegates and dignitaries, and varied perambulations throughout the city. This journal, and the detailed minutes he kept for his chaired Commission on History and Manuscripts, were never published. They reveal aspects and inner-workings of the Congress that have hitherto remained unknown. The illustrations and photos contained therein, as well as additional photos that were never seen, provide visual documentation of the Congress's participants and musical ensembles.

It deals with musical rhythmic and melodic modes, technical terms and treatises; music instruments; composition techniques and processes; education and oral/written transmissions; vocal and instrumental performances and their aesthetics; solo and ensemble music; change and its inevitability; musical and textual improvisations; ṭarab and the acute emotions of joy or grief; medieval dances; social status. Though extracts from The Grand Book of Songs have been translated in European languages since 1816, this work presents a much larger and more comprehensive scope that will benefit musicologists, medievalist and Middle Eastern scholars as well as the general reader.
