Adolf Deissmann: Ein (zu Unrecht) fast vergessener Theologe und Philologe

The chapters in this volume cover all aspects of the work of Adolf Deissmann (1866-1937). Following his main works, the authors highlight crucial aspects and impulses from his philological work on the New Testament, including the interpretation of Paul, Light from the Ancient East, the social status of the first Christians, and the lexicography of the New Testament. His background in the Lutheran Church of Hessen-Nassau, his contribution to the ecumenical movement together with Nathan Söderblom and through the Evangelische Wochenbriefe during World War II, and his role as rector of the Berlin University in 1930/1931 are also discussed. The contributions illustrate that notwithstanding his ecumenical engagement, Deissmann never gave up his scholarly work. The essays trace the influence of his philological and historical work among his students and place contemporary debates on Deissmann as philologist and theologian in their historical context. Dieser Band widmet sich in neun Einzelbeiträgen der gesamten Breite des Schaffens von Adolf Deissmann (1866-1937). Entlang der Hauptwerken werden wesentliche Aspekte und Impulse aus seiner philologisch orientierten Arbeit am Neuen Testament neu gewürdigt (Interpretation der Paulusbriefe, Licht vom Osten , "Unterschichtenthese", neutestamentliche Lexikographie et cetera). Daneben geht es um seine Herkunft aus der Evangelischen Kirche in Hessen-Nassau, um sein Wirken in der Ökumene am Beispiel der Beziehung zu Nathan Söderblom und der Arbeit an den Evangelischen Wochenbriefen im Ersten Weltkrieg sowie um seine Rolle als Rektor der Berliner Universität von 1930 bis 1931. Die Beiträge zeigen, dass Deissmann trotz seines ökumenischen Engagements seine wissenschaftliche Arbeit nicht aufgegeben hat. Die Aufsätze gehen den Wirkungen seiner philologisch-historischen Arbeit unter seinen Schülern nach und stellen die zeitgenössischen Debatten um den Philologen und Theologen Deissmann in ihren historischen Kontext.

Muḥammad Taqī "Malik al-shuʿarāʾ" Bahār (d. 1951) was a poet, a philologist and editor of ancient Persian texts, a publicist, and also a political activist. Born in Mashhad in 1856 and writing poetry since he was seven, he inherited the honorific title of poet laureate of Āstān-i Quds from his father, Malik al-shuʿarāʾ Ṣabūrī, in 1903. Malik al-shuʿarāʾ Bahār was active in the constitutional movement at the beginning of the twentieth century. He published activist poetry, was involved in various reformist newspapers and magazines, and saw the inside of a prison more than once, both in Qajar times and under Reza Shah. The present work is a collection of articles and documents in honour of Malik al-shuʿarāʾ Bahār with a focus on his significance as a philologist. Includes the first edition of his autobiography (in two versions), a bibliography, and a series of articles by various scholars in appreciation of his work as a philologist.

A commentary on the letters of M. Cornelius Fronto /

This is the first commentary on the letters of Marcus Cornelius Fronto (c. 90-95 - c. 167). It aims at an extensive grammatical, stylistic and historical interpretation of the letters and the ancient testimonies on Fronto. The author demonstrates where Fronto stands in Latin literature; hence the numerous quotations of parallel, similar and dissentient passages from Fronto and other writers. The letters are written in a pure, simple style, with a great deal of colloquialisms and many a post-classical turn of phrase. The many archaisms show how Fronto as a philologist had a comprehensive knowledge of pre-Cicero Latin. This commentary, based on the Teubner-edition by the author (Leipzig 1988), offers a thorough explanation of Fronto's style and language, e.g. of his archaisms and colloquialisms, identification of the persons mentioned, and the chronology of the letters. Seven elaborate indices complete this book.

This volume deals with the relation between Jacques Derrida's writing and Neoplatonism (ancient, patristic, medieval). Starting from the undeniable fact of Derrida's continuous engagement with this tradition, the present study deals not only with the actual reading of the Neoplatonists by Derrida ("Derrida after Neoplatonism") but also with a hypothetical reading of Derrida by Neoplatonism ("Neoplatonism after Derrida"). Thus, the intended audience is both philologists and philosophers interested in the encounter of ancient and contemporary thought. This study describes the usage of subclauses and participial clauses in Xenophon's Hellenica and Anabasis , with additional examples from other texts, using a text grammar-oriented approach, which can map more factors underlying the distribution of these clauses, and offers a more satisfactory explanation of a larger number of instances than is possible using the traditional sentence-level approach. The discourse-analytic description of the different clause types focuses on how relations are coded by means of subordinating conjunctions, the differences in form and function as discourse boundary markers between preposed, sentence-initially placed subclauses and participles, and the differences between clause types with respect to the information flow in on-going discourse. The discussion of many examples from the work of Xenophon makes this book interesting for both linguists and classical philologists.
