Thinking like a lawyer : essays on legal history and general history for John Crook on his eightieth birthday /

: This is a book about the law and life of Rome-in which contributors respond to John Crook's injunction to 'think like lawyers' by ranging as far as ancient Greece, ancient Persia and modern Denmark to expound their themes and draw comparisons. An opening section focuses on Civil Law, more or less as conventionally conceived, with chapters on the peculium, on municipal law at Irni in Roman Spain, on advisers of Roman provincial governors, and on violent crime. Roman perceptions of the physical and human worlds are the focus of a second section, and comparisons between Greek, Roman and modern ways of thinking about law and government come into the third section. In the final section, contributors argue the history of law and life from refractions of real and imagined Rome.

The Virgin Goddess, Studies in the Pagan and Christian Roots of Mariology.

: The contemporary search for the feminine face of God is requiring a re-examination of the relationship of Christianity to the pagan world in which it came to birth. Stephen Benko approaches this study as both an historian and a Christian believer. Inquiring into extra-biblical sources of Marian piety, belief and doctrine, he proposes 'that there is a direct line, unbroken and clearly discernible, from the goddess-cults of the ancients to the reverence paid and eventually the cult accorded to the Virgin Mary.' Chapter by chapter he seeks to establish his conclusion that 'in Mariology the Christian genius preserved and transformed some of the best and noblest ideas that paganism developed. Rather than being a 'regression' into Paganism, Mariology is a progression toward a clearer and better understanding of the feminine aspect of the divine and the role of the female in the history of salvation.' Gallo-Roman Bronzes and the Process of Romanization: The Cobannus Hoard /

: This book constitutes the first comprehensive publication of a cache of eight bronzes from east-central Gaul. The types of objects and accompanying inscriptions suggest that these bronzes originally came from a sanctuary of a god named Cobannus. The first part of the book describes, analyzes, and interprets the individual objects, which are divided between the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Shelby White - Leon Levy Collection. The latter part of this work places the cache within a chronological, cultic, and cultural context. The Cobannus hoard is valuable not only from an artistic point of view but also for the information it provides on many different aspects of the religious, social, and political life of Roman Gaul. The book is lavishly illustrated, with 2 maps and 117 illustrations.
