The trilogy Forms of Representation in the Aristotelian Tradition investigates how Aristotle and his ancient and medieval successors understood the relation between the external world and the human mind. It gives an equal footing to the three most influential linguistic traditions - Greek, Latin, and Arabic - and offers insightful interpretations of historical theories of perception, dreaming, and thinking. This second volume focuses on dreaming and analyses some of the most prominent problems connected to dreams as representations. The contributions in this volume address the core Aristotelian texts and their reception, up to and including contemporary scientific discourse on dreaming.

The seventeenth-century polymath Guarino Guarini is today mainly remembered as one of the most prominent Baroque architects. However, he was also active in a number of other fields such as philosophy, mathematics and astronomy. Philosophically, Guarini is an exceptionally interesting figure because of his efforts to adjust his Counter-reformation Aristotelianism to the latest discoveries of the ongoing scientific revolution. While his philosophy belonged to so-called "second scholasticism," unlike most other scholastic philosophers of the era he followed and was intensely interested in the latest scientific breakthroughs. Following al-Fārābī's approach, Ibn Sīnā (d. 428/1037) undertakes a new foundation of the First Philosophy based on his own critical systematisation of the Aristotelian theory of science, yielding the result that metaphysics is only possible as a transcendental science, id est that not only the subject-matter of metaphysics and its properties but also the arguments by which the first principles of knowledge are defended must be transcendental. This book provides the first systematic reconstruction of Ibn Sīnā's concept of metaphysics, and, given the considerable influence his achievement had on the Islamic tradition as well as on scholastic philosophers, it is relevant to the study of the history of metaphysics, Islamic theology (kalām), and Arabic philosophy.
