From document to history : epigraphic insights into the Greco-Roman world /

: In From Document to History: Epigraphic Insights into the Greco-Roman World , editors Carlos Noreña and Nikolaos Papazarkadas gather together an exciting set of original studies on Greek and Roman epigraphy, first presented at the Second North American Congress of Greek and Latin Epigraphy (Berkeley 2016). Chapters range chronologically from the sixth century BCE to the fifth century CE, and geographically from Egypt and Asia Minor to the west European continent and British isles. Key themes include Greek and Roman epigraphies of time, space, and public display, with texts featuring individuals and social groups ranging from Roman emperors, imperial elites, and artists to gladiators, immigrants, laborers, and slaves. Several papers highlight the new technologies that are transforming our understanding of ancient inscriptions, and a number of major new texts are published here for the first time.

The Modeller : Adriaen de Vries in Search of the viva figura /

: "In these days the most famous modeller": this is how the Dutch sculptor Adriaen de Vries (1556-1626) was characterised in 1621. A virtuoso modeller, De Vries explored new ways to enliven his art. His bronze sculptures were made in a radically new, sketchy style, with free figure compositions and a vigorous treatment of human anatomy, often balancing on the border between realism and distortion. This book explores how and why a Late-Renaissance sculptor broke so drastically with the prevailing stylistic paradigm of his time, in search of vivezza, natural liveliness, and the viva figura, the statue on the brink of coming to life. Adriaen de Vries aimed to create sculptures that move in the metaphorical no-man's land between death and life, back and forth from inert bronze to apparent vitality, as this study will argue.

The alabaster sarcophagus of Oimenepthah I., King of Egypt : now in Sir John Soane's museum, Lincoln's Inn Fields /

: Oimenepthah I, better known to us as Seti I, was regarded as a great pharaoh by his contemporaries, although his son Ramesses II would claim greater renown. Seti's tomb was discovered by Belzoni in 1817 and was the first to be found to have extensive decorations throughout. The huge alabaster coffin found in the tomb was sold to Sir John Soane, who held a three-day party upon its arrival at his London house, where it can still be seen. Written by the noted Egyptologist Samuel Sharpe (1799-1881), this illustrated description of the intricately decorated sarcophagus was published in 1864. By the time of his death, Sharpe was regarded in Britain as one of the most important figures in helping to popularise all things Egyptian. With the artist and sculptor Joseph Bonomi (1796 -1878), who provided the drawings here, he collaborated in organising the Egyptian court at the Crystal Palace in 1854.

Sleep in Renaissance Poland : Bartolomeo Berrecci's Tomb Sculpture and Its Legacy in East Central Europe /

: Focusing on the Italian architect and sculptor Bartolomeo Berrecci, this monograph examines an important subset of his sepulchral works-recumbent statuary-and offers insights into their patronage, reception, and interpretation. Berrecci's exploration of this sculptural type predates its eventual spread beyond Italy, Spain, and Poland. Indeed, he proved so successful that well over 200 statues can still be found in present-day Poland and Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus, Ukraine and Sweden. Although he mainly produced them for Catholic clients, examples of such monuments also exist in Lutheran, Calvinist and Orthodox settings. The volume draws on a vast array of primary sources, visual, textual, and archival, and compares Berrecci's workshop to the Tuscan Quattrocento workshops of Lorenzo Ghiberti, Donatello, Perugino et al. The volume draws on a vast array of primary sources, including artworks and documents. Comparisons are made with similar compositions emanating from Tuscan Quattrocento workshops, including Lorenzo Ghiberti, Donatello and Perugino.

Anthropomorphic images in rock art paintings and rock carvings /

: In the realm of rock art, humanlike images appear widely through time and space from the Upper Palaeolithic to the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, and for some continents to later, yet still prehistoric, times. The artworks discussed in 'Anthropomorphic Images in Rock Art Paintings and Rock Carvings' range from paintings, engravings or scratchings on cave walls and rock shelters, images pecked into rocky surfaces or upon standing stones, and major sacred sites (among them Gobekli Tepe, Avebury, Stonehenge, and the Palaeolithic Chauvet Cave) in which the possibility exists of recovery of the meanings intended by the artists and sculptors.

Demotic graffiti and other short texts gathered from many publications : short texts III 1201-2350 /

: As continuation of the two preceding volumes of 'Short Texts' with demotic votive inscriptions (volume I) and mummy labels (volume II), this volume brings together all but 800 demotic and Greek-demotic graffiti. These are in principle all the graffiti published in periodicals, congress proceedings and colloquia and 'Festschrifts', as well as in monographs that are not exclusively concerned with demotic graffiti (chiefly excavations reports). The texts are presented in topographical order from South to North, with those from a single monument kept together. The texts show the full gamut of themes encountered in demotic graffiti, which are more varied than their reputation would suggest: the commemorative inscriptions often have more to offer than just names and provide information about the careers of the inscribers, occasionally even touching on historical events of a larger scale. Specifically the numerous and variegated graffiti from the stone quarries in Middle Egypt and at Tura and Masara opposite ancient Memphis deserve to be mentioned because many of these texts are published here for the first time. Several clusters of these quarry graffiti belong to the first demotic texts that were recorded in the nineteenth century, and they constitute the only extant copies for many texts that have now been destroyed. In addition, there are some three hundred brief inscriptions on various objects such as coins, hieratic papyri and mummy linen, stelae, sculptors' models and plaques, various vases and amphoras, containers for embalming materials, dishes for the preparation of kyphi, and various other objects.
