Proba the Prophet : the Christian Virgilian Cento of Faltonia Betitia Proba /

: In Proba the Prophet: The Christian Virgilian Cento of Faltonia Betitia Proba Sigrid Schottenius Cullhed offers an in-depth study and reappraisal of the Cento of Proba and its reception. Proba's poem belongs to the few extant Latin texts from Antiquity penned by a woman writer, and one of the oldest Christian Latin poems. Schottenius Cullhed surveys and challenges common preconceptions and biographical constructions of the poem's author and early readers, and examines their impact on interpretations and evaluations of the text. The author also develops and puts to use an alternative model for understanding the poem and convincingly shows how the Virgilian source texts form a complex net of internal and external biblical typologies within the Cento .

Hindustani Music /

: During the Medieval period, Indian Music went through a meta¬morphosis, blending in itself beautifully the Arab, Persian, and Central Asian influences, and which gave birth to new forms and styles which continue to survive even today. Dr. Najma Perveen Ahmad has analysed the development of Hindustani Music during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries ad and has studied such texts as Raag Darpan, Tohfat-ul-Hind, Usulun-Naghmat-e-Aasifi and Naadirat-e-Shahi. What she provides in the pages of the book is an authentic survey of music during the seven-teenth and eighteenth centuries, and its impact on contemporary Hindustani Music. Development of forms and styles like Dhruvapada, Khayal, and many Ragas have been gone into in their minutest details. Profiles of musicians during that time and their contemporary musical traditions add great value to this well-researched study.

Early Modern Fire : Science, Technology, and the Urban Space /

: Early Modern Fire offers new perspectives on the history of fire in early modern Europe (ca. 1600-1800). Far from the background role that scholarship has traditionally assigned to fire, the essays in this volume demonstrate its centrality to understanding the entangled histories of science, technology, and society in the pre-industrial period. Analysing case studies ranging from alchemy to cooking, from firefighting to fireworks, the contributors show that the history of fire is not only one of change and progress, but also of continuity, characterised by the persistence of traditional know-how, small-scale innovation, and the coexistence of different paradigms. Contributors include: Gianenrico Bernasconi, Catherine Denys, Hannah Elmer, Liliane Hilaire-Pérez, Olivier Jandot, Cyril Lacheze, Andrew M.A. Morris, Cornelia Müller, Bérengère Pinaud, Stefano Salvia, Marco Storni, Marie Thébaud-Sorger, and Simon Werrett See Less
