How was drama experienced in early modern China? It was not tied to a single medium such as the page or the stage, but operated in a media ecology-an environment in which it integrated other arts and media while being refashioned in a variety of arts and media. This book explores a wide range of cultural experimentation, collectively termed "playing with plays:" the theatricality embedded in commentary, the poetic and visual imagination arising from drama illustrations, the interactions between reading and singing arias, the imbrication of reading plays and practicing religion, and the ludic act of writing playful essays on drama. Through engaging these disparate phenomena with media studies, the book advances a new model for thinking about drama history, and shows the entwinement of plays and different forms of media in shaping perception, molding experience, and enabling new subject positions to emerge in early modern China.

In Media, Modernity and Dynamic Plants , Janet Janzen traces the motif of the "dynamic plant" through film and literature in early 20th century German culture. Often discussed solely as symbols or metaphors of the human experience, plants become here the primary focus and their role in literature and film is extended beyond their symbolic function. Plants have been (and still are) seen as closer to static objects than to living, moving beings. Making use of examples from film and literature, Janet Janzen demonstrates a shift in the perception of plants-as-objects to plants-as-living-beings that can be attributed to new technology and also to the return of Romantic and Vitalistic discourses on nature.

Reproducing Miracles : On Media and the Miraculous in Early Modern Europe /

The early modern world abounded with representations of miracles. Departing from the view that miracles are fundamentally media events, the chapters of this volume examine how miraculous occurrences were reproduced across various cultural productions of the time, including epic poetry, painting, theatre, hagiographies, ego documents, and philosophical treatises. From an interdisciplinary perspective, scholars from literary studies, art history, and history analyse the strategies employed by creators to capture the ephemeral nature of miracles. The chapters show that these strategies ranged from brevity and matter-of-factness to material abundance and polysensoric performances. By discussing the early modern miraculous from a medial standpoint, the volume demonstrates that the reproduction of miracles served not only to validate their veracity but, more importantly, to disseminate them as perceived deviations from the laws of nature, allowing humans to glimpse the transcendent.
