The Berlin-Baghdad express : the Ottoman Empire and Germany's bid for world power /
:
The modern Middle East was forged in the crucible of the First World War, but few know the full story of how war actually came to the region. As Sean McMeekin reveals in this startling reinterpretation of the war, it was neither the British nor the French but rather a small clique of Germans and Turks who thrust the Islamic world into the conflict for their own political, economic, and military ends. The Berlin-Baghdad Express tells the fascinating story of how Germany exploited Ottoman pan-Islamism in order to destroy the British Empire, then the largest Islamic power in the world. Meanwhile the Young Turks harnessed themselves to German military might to avenge Turkey's hereditary enemy, Russia. Told from the perspective of the key decision-makers on the Turco-German side, many of the most consequential events of World War I -- Turkey's entry into the war, Gallipoli, the Armenian massacres, the Arab revolt, and the Russian Revolution -- are illuminated as never before. Drawing on a wealth of new sources, McMeekin forces us to re-examine Western interference in the Middle East and its lamentable results. It is an epic tragicomedy of unintended consequences, as Turkish nationalists give Russia the war it desperately wants, jihad begets an Islamic insurrection in Mecca, German sabotage plots upend the Tsar delivering Turkey from Russia's yoke, and German Zionism midwifes the Balfour Declaration. All along, the story is interwoven with the drama surrounding German efforts to complete the Berlin to Baghdad railway, the weapon designed to win the war and assure German hegemony over the Middle East. - Publisher.

The Ottoman press, 1908-1923 /
:
The Ottoman Press (1908-1923) looks at Ottoman periodicals in the period after the Second Constitutional Revolution (1908) and the formation of the Turkish Republic (1923). It analyses the increased activity in the press following the revolution, legislation that was put in place to control the press, the financial aspects of running a publication, preventive censorship and the impact that the press could have on readers. There is also a chapter on the emergence and growth of the Ottoman press from 1831 until 1908, which helps readers to contextualize the post-revolution press.

Presse als Medium des Kulturtransfers : Das Journal Thornische Nachrichten von gelehrten Sachen (1762-1766) im preußisch-polnischen Kulturraum /
:

Wroxeter, the Cornovii and the urban process : final report on the Wroxeter Hinterland project, 1994-1997.
:
In the mid 1990s, the site of the Roman city of Viroconium Cornoviorum at Wroxeter, Shropshire, was subjected to one of the most intensive campaigns of geophysical survey ever carried out on a Roman town. The result was a complete plan of the city using magnetometry but also significant deployment of other technologies including resistance, GPR and more experimental technologies. Since that time, geophysical survey has continued intermittently, using the site as a geophysical laboratory. This volume reports on the archaeological interpretation of this work, marrying the extensive and nuanced geophysical data with a detailed analysis of the existing aerial photographic record created by Arnold Baker during the 1950s to 1980s.

Expressing the Eternity as Seriality: On šn as a Number of Large Magnitude /
:
A new number of large magnitude, identified by the šn sign, appears in the New Kingdom and is used also in the Ptolemaic period. Its attestation is relatively rare, usually limited to royal inscriptions, in expressions of the eternity and large quantities as series of numbers. Already in Middle Kingdom representations of the Sed festival, the omen of eternity to the king is formulated by composing series of numbers in descending order of magnitude. This paper suggests a new interpretation of the number šn, related to the calculation of the Sothic cycles. Such an interpretation allows us to explain also the meaning of the epithet “mistress of 16,” attributed to Isis-Sothis in a hymn to the goddess in the Ptolemaic temple of Isis at Aswan.
