Valentinianism : new studies /
:
"Since Antiquity, the movement associated with Valentinus has been regarded as the most typical and the most representative exponent of "Gnosticism." Recent research has led to a new appraisal of Valentinianism as a distinct form of early Christianity that deserves to be understood in its own right. Valentinianism served as a catalyst for the development of mainstream Christian doctrine, exegesis and ritual. Its connections to contemporary forms of Platonism are being progressively uncovered. The present volume, edited by Christoph Markschies and Einar Thomassen, shows the current state of research on Valentinianism, offering contributions by leading experts about the history of the movement, contested aspects of Valentinian doctrine, and the use and interpretation of the New Testament by the Valentinians"--

Renewing Royal Imagery : Akhenaten and Family in the Amarna Tombs /
:
In Renewing Royal Imagery: Akhenaten and Family in the Amarna Tombs , Arlette David offers a systematic, in-depth analysis of the visual presentation of ancient Egyptian kingship during Akhenaten's reign (circa 1350 B.C.) in the elite tombs of his new capital, domain of his god Aten, and attempts to answer two basic questions: how can Amarna imagery look so blatantly Egyptian and yet be intrinsically different? And why did it need to be so?.

Ancient Egyptian Letters to the Dead : The Realm of the Dead through the Voice of the Living /
:
In Ancient Egyptian Letters to the Dead: the Realm of the Dead through the Voice of the Living Julia Hsieh investigates the beliefs and practices of communicating with the dead in ancient Egypt through close lexical semantic analysis of extant Letters. Hsieh shows how oral indicators, toponyms, and adverbs in these Letters signal a practice that was likely performed aloud in a tomb or necropolis, and how the senders of these Letters demonstrate a belief in the power and omniscience of their deceased relatives and enjoin them to fight malevolent entities and advocate on their behalf in the afterlife. These Letters reflect universals in beliefs and practices and how humankind, past and present, makes sense of existence beyond death.

The Phoebe A. Hearst Expedition to Naga ed-Deir, Cemeteries N 2000 and N 2500 /
:
The Phoebe A. Hearst Expedition to Naga ed-Deir, Cemeteries N 2000 and N 2500 presents the results of excavations directed by George A. Reisner and led by Arthur C. Mace. The site of Naga ed-Deir, Egypt, is unusual for its continued use over a long period of time (c. 3500 BCE-650 CE). Burials in N 2000 and N 2500 date to the First Intermediate Period/Middle Kingdom and the Coptic era. In keeping with Reisner's earlier publications of Naga ed-Deir, this volume presents artifacts in chapter-length studies devoted to a particular object type and includes a burial-by-burial description. The excavators' original drawings, notes, and photographs are complemented by a contemporary analysis of the objects by experts in their subfields.

The Egyptian Elite as Roman Citizens : Looking at Ptolemaic Private Portraiture /
:
In The Egyptian Elite as Roman Citizens Giorgia Cafici offers the analysis of private, male portrait sculptures as attested in Egypt between the end of the Ptolemaic and the beginning of the Roman Period. Ptolemaic/Early Roman portraits are examined using a combination of detailed stylistic evaluation, philological analysis of the inscriptions and historical and prosopographical investigation of the individuals portrayed. The emergence of this type of sculpture has been contextualised, both geographically and chronologically, as it belongs to a wider Mediterranean horizon. The analysis has revealed that eminent members of the Egyptian elite decided to be represented in an innovative way, echoing the portraits of eminent Romans of the Late Republic, whose identity was surely known in Egypt.
