A Late Middle Kingdom Private Stela of the Priests of Hathor (Cairo Museum CG 20780) /

: In this paper, the stela of Senbi (CG 20780), the great wab-priest of Hathor, as well as overseer of fields, and his wife Nebunakht, who was also a priestess of Hathor, is published exclusively for the first time. The stela is currently preserved in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Unfortunately, nothing is mentioned about this stela’s provenance in the museum’s records. The stela alludes to several titles of both Senbi (imy-r3 3?(w)t and w‘b ‘3 n ?wt-?r) and his wife Nebunakht (?mt n?r ?wt-?r), but the unique peculiarity of the stela is its reference to the epithet sn ?q3 “The Brother of the Ruler.” This stela can be dated to the late Middle Kingdom based on the individuals’ names, as well as the titles of the owner and his family. The design and the depiction of multiple members in the stela are also characteristics of the Middle Kingdom stelae. All these criteria, along with some relevant grammatical features contribute to a late Middle Kingdom date—most likely the Thirteenth Dynasty. The author describes the stela, discusses its philological, iconographical, and stylistic features, and examines the titles of its owners.

L'Hymnaire manichéen chinois presents a collection of twenty-five hymns that were intended for the Manichean religious practice of the class of Auditors. The scroll, which came to light in the early twentieth century in the province of Dunhuang (modern Ganzu) after lying buried for around twelve centuries, contains several hymns transcribed from a variety of languages that were current in Central Asia during the epoch of its redaction. This translation provides a new perspective on the Religion of Light as it was adopted in China, and on the wide reach of the message of the Iranian prophet Mani (216-276) that aimed at universal scope and was meant to unite people from all parts of the world, of whatever origin, language and history.
: Translation into French of a group of hymns in Chinese, originally translated from a variety of Central Asian languages in the 800s and written on a scroll later found in the early 20th century in the province of Dunhuang, modern day Gansu, and held at the British Library under the annotation S 2659. : 1 online resource. : Includes bibliographical references and index. : 9789004380264 : 0929-2470 ;

Brill's companion to military defeat in ancient Mediterranean society /

: In Brill's Companion to Military Defeat in Ancient Mediterranean Society , Jessica H. Clark and Brian Turner lead a re-examination of how Near Eastern, Greek, and Roman societies addressed - or failed to address - their military defeats and casualties of war. Original case studies illuminate not only how political and military leaders managed the political and strategic consequences of military defeats, but also the challenges facing defeated soldiers, citizens, and other classes, who were left to negotiate the meaning of defeat for themselves and their societies. By focusing on the connections between war and society, history and memory, the chapters collected in this volume contribute to our understanding of the ubiquity and significance of war losses in the ancient world.

Living in the Ottoman ecumenical community : essays in honour of Suraiya Faroqhi /

: This book dedicated to Suraiya Faroqhi shows that the early modern world was not only characterized by its having been split up into states with closed frontiers. Writing history "from the bottom", by treating the Ottoman Empire and other countries as "subjects of history", reduces the importance of political borders for doing historical research. Each social, economic and religious group had its own world-view and in most of the cases the borders of these communities were not identical with the political frontiers. Regarding the Ottoman Empire and the other early modern states as systems of different ecumenical communities rather than only as political units offers a different approach to a better understanding of the various ways in which their subjects interacted. In this context the term ecumenical community designates social, religious and economic groups building up cross-border communities. Different ecumenical communities overlapped within the boundaries of a state or in a specific area and gave them their distinctive characters. This festschrift for Suraiya Faroqhi aims to describe some of the close contacts between various ecumenical communities within and beyond the Ottoman borders.

Cartooning for a modern Egypt /

: The Egyptian caricature is generally studied as part of Egyptian mass culture, and mainly discussed in the context of Egypt's anti-colonial resistance to British foreign rule, as part of the forging of a "national style". In Cartooning for a Modern Egypt, Keren Zdafee foregrounds the role that Egypt's foreign-local entrepreneurs and caricaturists played in formulating and constructing the modern Egyptian caricature of the interwar years, that was designated for, and reflected, a colonial and cosmopolitan culture of a few. Keren Zdafee illustrates how Egyptian foreign-local caricaturists envisioned and evaluated the past, present, and future of Egyptian society, in the context of Cairo's colonial cosmopolitanism, by adopting a theoretical, semiotic, and historical approach.
