Cartooning for a modern Egypt /
:
The Egyptian caricature is generally studied as part of Egyptian mass culture, and mainly discussed in the context of Egypt's anti-colonial resistance to British foreign rule, as part of the forging of a "national style". In Cartooning for a Modern Egypt, Keren Zdafee foregrounds the role that Egypt's foreign-local entrepreneurs and caricaturists played in formulating and constructing the modern Egyptian caricature of the interwar years, that was designated for, and reflected, a colonial and cosmopolitan culture of a few. Keren Zdafee illustrates how Egyptian foreign-local caricaturists envisioned and evaluated the past, present, and future of Egyptian society, in the context of Cairo's colonial cosmopolitanism, by adopting a theoretical, semiotic, and historical approach.

Jewish-Muslim relations in past and present : a kaleidoscopic view /
:
This volume assembles multidisciplinary research on the Judaeo-Islamic tradition in medieval and modern contexts. The introduction discusses the nature of this tradition and proposes the more fluid and inclusive designation of "Jewish-Muslim Relations." Contributions highlight diverse aspects of Jewish-Muslim relations in medieval and modern contexts, including the academic study of Jewish history, the Qur'anic notion of the "upright community" referring to the "People of the Book," Jews in medieval fatwas, use of Arabic and Hebrew script, Jewish prayer in Christian Europe and the Islamic world, the permissibility of Arabic music in modern Jewish thought, Jewish and Muslim feminist exegesis, modern Sephardic and Morisco identity, popular Tunisian song, Jewish-Muslim relations in cinema and A.S. Yehuda's study of an 11th-century Jewish mystic.

Dalmatia and the Mediterranean : portable archeology and the poetics of influence /
:
Using the Braudelian concept of the Mediterranean this volume focuses on the condition of "coastal exchanges" involving the Dalmatian littoral and its Adriatic and more distant maritime network. Spalato and Ragusa intersect with Constantinople, Cairo and Spanish Naples just as Sinan, Palladio and Robert Adam cross paths in this liquid expanse. Concentrating on materiality and on the arts, architecture in particular, the authors identify portability and hybridity as characteristic of these exchanges, and tease out expected and unexpected serendipitous moments when they occurred. Focusing on translation and its instruments these essays expand the traditional concept of influence by thrusting mobility and the \'hardware\' of cultural transmission, its mechanisms, rather than its effects, into the foreground. Contributors include: Doris Behrens-Abouseif , SOAS, University of London ; Joško Belamarić , Institute of Art History , Split; Marzia Faietti , Uffizi , Florence; Jasenka Gudelj , University of Zagreb ; Cemal Kafadar , Harvard University ; Ioli Kalavrezou , Harvard University ; Suzanne Marchand , State University of Louisiana ; Erika Naginski , Harvard University ; Gülru Necipoğlu , Harvard University ; Goran Nikšić , City of Split , Split; Alina Payne , Harvard University ; Avinoam Shalem , Columbia University and David Young Kim , University of Pennsylvania

Le naos de Sopdou à Saft el-Henneh (CG 70021) : paléographie /
: "The present work examines the form and function of hieroglyphic signs on the naos of Sopdu from Saft el-Henneh, now in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. This monument, dating to the 30th Dynasty and inscribed on all four sides, is of considerable epigraphic interest, as there are few similarly long inscriptions from that period. The plates show almost 1,500 signs that have been drawn especially to accompany this publication. These are grouped into 443 categories which are described in the usual format of the collection Paléographie hiéroglyphique: identification of the sign, palaeographical description with particular reference to parallels on contemporary monuments, and function. This volume on the naos of Sopdu is likewise of interest for anyone involved in the study of Egyptian art and religion in the Late Period." -- back cover. : xxxi, 237 p. : ill. ; 28 cm. : Includes bibliographical references (p. xxvii-xxxi). : 9782724706475
Through Hermopolitan lenses : studies on the so-called Book of Two Ways in ancient Egypt /
:
The so-called Book of Two Ways is a long and complex composition containing both texts and images. It reached us on the insides of some coffins and tomb walls, principally from the Hermopolitan nome in the Egyptian Middle Kingdom (2055-1650 BC). Wael Sherbiny presents a pioneering study based on all the original and hitherto unpublished sources. Through Hermopolitan Lenses challenges many of the traditional views related to this composition as part of the Coffin Texts. It also provides an integrated pictorial and textual analysis revealing many unprecedented facts. The oldest and longest leather manuscript from ancient Egypt (the Cairo leather roll), which Sherbiny rediscovered during his study and soon became world news, features here for the first time as well.

Codex Amrensis 1 /
:
Codex Amrensis 1 , the first volume of the series Documenta Coranica contains images and Arabic texts of four sets of fragments (seventy-five sheets) of the Qurʾān codex, once kept in the ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ Mosque at Al-Fusṭāṭ, and now in the collections of the National Library of Russia, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, The Museum of Islamic Art, Doha and the Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art. It includes an extensive introduction, the facsimile of the original, and the full text with annotations. The manuscript, copied during the first half of the 8th century and written in ḥiǧāzī script, contains diacritical signs for about 20% of the letters, without any signs for short vowels. It varies from today's reference editions of the Qurʾān in verse numbering and has a different orthography. Essential reading for students and scholars of the history of the Qurʾān and its written transmission.
