Canonization and Decanonization : Papers presented to the International Conference of the Leiden Institute for the Study of Religions (LISOR) held at Leiden 9-10 January 1997. /

: This volume contains the papers read at the Leiden Conference on Canonization and Decanonization of 9-10 January 1997. The emphasis in this rich and wide-ranging contribution to the subject is on the processes of canonization and decanonization in several religions and on the phenomenon of religious canons as well. It has two sections: (De)canonization and the History of Religions, and (De)canonization and Modern Society. In the first section processes out of which canons eventually emerge are highlighted in contributions devoted to particular religions, viz. African religions, Judaism and Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Zoroastrianism. The articles of the second section are of particular relevance to the contemporary situation in the western world, dealing with aspects such as forms of the survival of a canon in processes of modernization, canonization and the challenge of plurality, and canonization and hermeneutics. The reader may benefit even more from this volume as it contains also An Annotated Bibliography on the subject.

Haecceities.

: Haecceities: Essentialism, Identity, and Abstraction is both an artistic and philosophical examination of the limits of Abstraction in art and of kinds of radical identity that are determined in the identification of those limits. Building on his work Subjects and Objects , Strayer shows how the fundamental conditions of making and apprehending works of art can be used, in concert with language, thought, and perception, as 'material' for producing the more Abstract and radical artworks possible. Certain limits of Abstraction and possibilities of radical identity are then identified that are critically and philosophically considered. They prove to be so extreme that the concepts artwork, abstraction, identity, and object in art, philosophy, and philosophy of art, have to be reconsidered.

We Have Always Been Transcultural: The Arts as an Example /

: Wolfgang Welsch demonstrates for the first time that transculturality - the mixed constitution of cultures - is by no means only a characteristic of the present, but has de facto determined the composition of cultures since time immemorial. The historical transculturality is demonstrated using examples from the arts. While transculturality was often viewed with reservation where political, social, or psychological levels were at stake, it was rather welcomed and appreciated in the field of art. The book therefore demonstrates the historical prevalence of transculturality via all areas of art and does so with respect to all cultures and continents of our world.

Yours the Power : Faith-Based Organizing in the USA.

: Despite shifts in the religious landscape in North America--reflected in the significant increase in those with no religious affiliation and emptier pews across the religious spectrum--there has also been a rise in participation in faith-based grassroots organizations. People of faith are increasingly joining broad-based organizing efforts to seek social change in their communities, regions and country. This unique volume brings together the most current thinking on faith-based organizing from the perspective of theologians, social researchers and practitioners. The current state of faith based organizing is critically presented, as it has evolved from its roots in the mid-twentieth century into a context which raises new questions for its philosophical assumptions, methodology, and very future. Publishing this extensive collection renders it available to a wide readership: students, curators, archaeologists, art historians, collectors and everybody with serious interest in the material culture of the ancient world. Choreonarratives : Dancing Stories in Greek and Roman Antiquity and Beyond /

: Choreonarratives , a collection of essays by classicists, dance scholars, and dance practitioners, explores the uses of dance as a narrative medium. Case studies from Greek and Roman antiquity illustrate how dance contributed to narrative repertoires in their multimodal manifestations, while discussions of modern and contemporary dance shed light on practices, discourses, and ancient legacies regarding the art of dancing stories. Benefitting from the crossover of different disciplinary, historical, and artistic perspectives, the volume looks beyond current narratological trends and investigates the manifold ways in which dance can acquire meaning, disclose storyworlds ranging from myths to individual life-stories, elicit the narratees' responses, and generate powerful narratives of its own. Together, the eclectic approaches of Choreonarratives>/i> rethink dance's capacity to tell, enrich, and inspire stories. Contributors are Sophie M. Bocksberger, Iris J. Bührle, Marie-Louise Crawley, Samuel N. Dorf, Karin Fenböck, Susan L. Foster, Laura Gianvittorio-Ungar, Sarah Olsen, Lucia Ruprecht, Karin Schlapbach, Danuta Shanzer, Christina Thurner, Yana Zarifi-Sistovari, Bernhard Zimmermann.

Pentecostal aesthetics : theological reflections in a pentecostal philosophy of art and aesthetics /

: Pentecostals have not sufficiently worked out a distinctively Pentecostal philosophy of art and aesthetics. In Pentecostal Aesthetics: Theological Reflections in a Pentecostal Philosophy of Art and Aesthetics , with a foreword by Amos Yong, Steven Félix-Jäger corrects this by reflecting theologically on art and aesthetics from a global Pentecostal perspective, particularly through a pneumatic Pentecostal lens. Félix-Jäger contends that a Pentecostal philosophy of art and aesthetics must comply with the global, experiential, and pneumatocentric nature of the Pentecostal movement. Such a philosophy can be ontologically grounded in a relativistic theory of art. Theological reflections concerning the nature and purpose of art must then be sensitive to the ontological foundations secured thereof. In this fashion, Pentecostals can gain ample insight about the Spirit's work in today's contemporary artworld.

Interaction between Judaism and Christianity in history, religion, art and literature /

: This volume contains a variety of essays that deal with the complex relationships between Judaism and Christianity. From the Jewish side, particularly in Orthodox circles, there is a position maintaining the independence of Judaism from outside influences including Christianity. Traditional Christian theology, on the other hand, held a supercessionist view in which Judaism was seen merely as a historical preparation for the later revelation of Christianity. Was there no real interaction? When and how did Judaism and Christianity become two distinct religions? When did the 'parting of ways\' take place, if indeed there really was such a parting of ways? The present volume takes a bold step forward by assuming that no historical period can be excluded from the interactive process between Judaism and Christianity, conscious or unconscious, as a polemical rejection or as tacit appropriation.

What is the status of art and aesthetic affectivity in Michel Henry? Is the place occupied by art within the economy of his material phenomenology the most appropriate site for the immanent exploration of appearing and the auscultation of the transcendental affectivity of life? This book locates some remarkable avenues through which the need to prepare the ground for a material aesthetic becomes urgent enough to be given attention. In order to clear this path and take the first steps in the direction it leads, the studies gathered here, each in its own way, are engaged in the study of the status of art in Michel Henry, from the perspective of painting, of course, but also the fields of language, literature, dance, architecture and music. The collection is preceded by an essay by Michel Henry, devoted to the painting of Pierre Magré.

Selves Engraved on Stone: Seals and Identity in the Ancient Near East, ca. 1415-1050 BCE /

: Typically carved in stone, the cylinder seal is perhaps the most distinctive art form to emerge in ancient Mesopotamia. It spread across the Near East from ca. 3300 BCE onwards, and remained in use for millennia. What was the role of this intricate object in the making of a person's social identity? As the first comprehensive study dedicated to this question, Selves Engraved on Stone explores the ways in which different but often intersecting aspects of identity, such as religion, gender, community and profession, were constructed through the material, visual, and textual characteristics of seals from Mesopotamia and Syria.

Olbia : eine altgriechische Stadt im nordwestlichen Schwarzmeerraum /

: This book presents a completely new and up-to-date archaeological and historical study of the Black Sea city-state of Olbia. More comprehensive than any other yet produced, it ranges through the millennium of its existence from the Archaic to the Roman period and includes the full range of material remains found in the city and its region. Themes treated include building and architecture, agriculture, the economy of the city (the food economy, crafts, trade and coins), art and religion. The illustrations are copious, well-chosen, and present much material which will be new to Western readers. Also there are many useful maps and reconstructions of buildings. This presentation of the results of the research of scholars from the former Soviet Union into a Greek Pontic city has long been awaited and will form a reliable basis for the next generation of research into the theme.
