The Demotic and Hieratic Papyri in the Suzuki Collection of Tokai University /
: This volume publishes, for the first time, approximately fifty late Egyptian texts from the Suzuki collection held at Tokai University, Japan. The project is a result of a five-year collaboration between Tokai University, Yale University, Johns Hopkins University, The University of Michigan, and the Staatliche Museum zu Berlin. The texts were purchased by Professor Suzuki mainly in the early 1960s from various dealers in Cairo. The bulk of the collection, now housed in the Department of Asian Civilization, School of Letters at Tokai University as part of the Ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection (AENET), consists of early demotic texts. There is also one late hieratic text concerned with temple land, and a few small Greek fragments from the Byzantine period. The texts published here present an interesting range of document types, a range of demotic handwriting, and a few surprises. An added note, of interest to our readers, is that three of our members will participate this year in a joint expedition of Yale and the University of Pennsylvania Museums, which has just been announced. The expedition, in charge of Professor William Kelly Simpson, Vice President and Trustee of the Center, will establish a camp in Nubia, in the shadow of the famous temple of Raineses II at Abu Simbel, twenty miles north of the Second Cataract. Professor Simpson will be joined there by (among others) Edward L. B. Terrace, of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, a member of the Center, and Nicholas B. Millet, the present Director of the Center in Cairo. Dr. George T. Scanlon will represent the Center in Cairo during Mr. Millet *s absence.

The Treaty of Ghent signed in 1814, ending the War of 1812, allowed Americans once again to travel abroad. Medical students went to Paris, artists to Rome, academics to Gottingen, and tourists to all European capitals. More intrepid Americans ventured to Athens, to Constantinople, and even to Egypt. Beginning with two eighteenth-century travellers, this book then turns to the 25-year period after 1815 that saw young men from East Coast cities, among them graduates of Harvard, Yale, and Columbia, travelling to the lands of the Bible and of the Greek and Latin authors they had first known as teenagers. Drawing on unpublished letters and diaries together with previously neglected newspaper accounts, as well as a handful of published accounts, this book offers a new look at the early American experience in Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean world. More than thirty illustrations complement the stories told by the travellers themselves.
