By means of technical examination of the gold objects now part of the renowned and outstanding Egyptian collection of the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden, this book gives a unique and innovatory insight in the work of the ancient Egyptian goldsmith. In 1922 the world came face to face with a young pharaoh : in that year the tomb of Tutankhamun was discovered and his breathtaking gold mask became known to everybody. Ancient Egyptian gold is known to all of us. But what was the significance of gold in Ancient Egyptian society? Where was it found and how was it won? And where did the Ancient Egyptian goldsmith work and what techniques did he master? The first part of this book answers the questions mentioned above. The second part is a catalogue of gold objects which are part of the renowned and outstanding collection of the Egyptian Department of the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden. Regional styles soon evolved giving rise to high levels of technical craftsmanship and to shaping particular iconographic and decorative patterns. Copper, gold, silver and platinum were mined, processed and converted into thousands of ornaments, offerings, tools and weapons extensively used both by elites and by the common people. This work discusses this topic.

Around 1720 in Fez Aḥmad born al-Mubārak al-Lamaṭī, a religious scholar, wrote down the words and teachings of the Sufi master ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Dabbāgh. Al-Dabbāgh shunned religious studies but, having reached illumination and met with the Prophet Muḥammad, he was able to explain any obscurities in the Qurʾān, ḥadīth s and sayings of earlier Sufis. The resulting book, known as the Ibrīz , describes how al-Dabbāgh attained illumination and access to the Prophet, as well as his teachings about the Council of the godly that regulates the world, relations between master and disciple, the darkness in men's bodies, Adam's creation, Barzakh, Paradise and Hell, and much more besides. This 'encyclopaedia' of Sufism with its many teaching stories and illustrations provides a window onto social life and religious ideas in Fez a generation or so before powerful outside forces began to play a role in the radical transformation of Morocco.
