This book is a collected volume that crosses traditional boundaries between methodologies. Each of its sixteen articles is based on imaginative combinations of data provided by excavations, artifacts, monuments, urban topography, rural layouts, historical narratives and/or archival records. The volume as a whole demonstrates the effectiveness of interdisciplinary research applied to historical, cultural and archaeological problems. Exploring the military, legal, social and literary aspects of ancient warfare, this study examines the multifaceted nature of the siege phenomenon in the Ancient Near East. The book is based on Akkadian and biblical (and, to lesser degree, Greek, Aramaic, Egyptian, Hittite and Ugaritic) sources as well as on the depictions on reliefs from Assyrian palaces and Egyptian temples. The analysis incorporates lexical study and military thinking and focuses on the technology of warfare and human behavior in a state of emergency. Jerusalem and Babylon : a study into Augustine's City of God and the sources of his doctrine of the two cities /

Although many studies have been devoted to Augustine's City of God and its most important theme, viz. the antithesis between the civitas Dei and the terrena civitas ,until now no consensus has been reached concerning the sources of this doctrine. Was Augustine decisively influenced by Manichaeism, by (Neo)Platonism, the Stoa or Philo, by the Donatist Tyconius? Or should we look in another direction and refer to preceding Christian, Jewish, and especially to archaic Jewish-Christian traditions? This lucidly written books opens with a survey of the research carried out so far on the aim, structure and central theme of the City of God . Chapter 2 analyzes the essentials of Augustine's life, of his City of God , and of his doctrine of the two cities. Making use of one of the recently discovered letters of Augustine in Chapter 3 the author describes the City of God as an apology and as a catechetical work. Chapter 4 provides an investigation into the possible sources of Augustine's doctrine of the two cities in Manichaeism, in (Neo)Platonism, the Stoa and Philo, and in the works of Tyconius. The idea of two antithetical cities proves to be present most clearly in writings in which, closely related to Jewish thinking, archaic Christian concepts occupy an important place. In a final chapter some pertinent remarks are made on Jewish and Jewish-Christian influences on pre-Augustinian Christianity in Africa.

Fergus Millar's works have renewed our approach of the Roman world. He had studied the functioning of the Roman Empire in the perspective of the Emperor's activities, from Augustus to Constantine; as well as the Republic during the last two centuries BC in order to revalue the people within the institutions; and finally the Near East from Augustus to Constantine, and then to the Muslim conquest. He uses to be engaged with the whole evidence (literary, epigraphic, papyrological, juridical and archaeological) that he examines closely with revived view-points. Distinguished and younger scholars have dealt, during a seminar, with the main aspects of Millar's research, its reception and the reactions it has raised, and proposed surveys about current inquiries, as well as perspectives for future studies.

Among the many subjects on which Theophrastus wrote, music is one of the most fascinating, as is testified by the sources discussed in this volume. Although scanty, the material we have-sixteen texts altogether, most of which are indirect testimonies-gives an idea of the originality and modernity of Theophrastus' thought on music, and makes us regret that we do not know more. Our philosopher conceives of music as something that originates from a movement in the soul caused by passions and comes into existence through the body. Accordingly, he is interested in performance-i.e. the way in which musical expression is brought to the listener-and its effects on the soul and the body-e.g. musical therapy.

This volume accompanies Volume A which presents the archaeological survey of the sites of the Themistou Meris (north-western Fayoum), by giving a thorough introduction to the pottery found during the survey.
The great doyen of the pottery of the Graeco-Roman period in Egypt, the late Donald M. Bailey, did not live to see his volume in print. His legacy is an exemplary study of forms and materials of the different kinds of ceramic vessels, from amphorae to cooking-pots and from coarse kitchen ware to fine table ware. The book is rounded up by two short essays, which add up-to-date information on the pottery found in the Themistou Meris as well as in other districts of the Fayoum.

This volume demonstrates that we should understand nascent Christianity and early Judaism as sharing to a large extent the same traditions. It throws fresh light on the Jewishness of the Two Ways teaching in Didache 1-6 as it presents a cautious reconstruction of the Jewish prototype of the Two Ways and traces the Jewish life situation in which the instruction could flourish. In the field of liturgical studies, a significant contribution is made to the discussion of Didache 7-10. It improves our understanding of the Jewish provenance and historical development of Baptism and Eucharist.
