Controlling Sounds : Music, Sound Technologies, War and Power in the Era of Fascisms /

: Music and sound were pivotal yet frequently underestimated instruments of fascist propaganda, nationalist dominance, disciplinary control, terror, and violence, as well as forms of resistance during the interwar period and World War II. This volume brings together cross-disciplinary research by scholars from anglophone and European institutions, examining the use of sound for the enactment of political power across diverse regions in Europe, North America, and India. The chapters conceptualise music as a form of sound technology with an exceptional and adaptable propagandistic potential. They employ a variety of approaches that illuminate the political and propagandistic efforts of musicians - including composers, performers, critics, and music journalists - as well as sound technicians, mass media representatives, detention centres, political bodies, and more.

The poetics of grammar and the metaphysics of sound and sign /

: This book examines the seemingly universal notion of a grammatical cosmos. Individual essays discuss how many of the great civilizations provide cognitive maps that emerge from a metaphysical linguistics in which sounds, syllables and other signs form the constructive elements of reality. The essays address cross-cultural issues such as: Why does grammar serve as a template in these cultures? How are such templates culturally contoured? To what end are they applied - id est, what can one do with grammar - , and how does it work upon the world? The book is divided into three sections that deal with the metaphysics of linguistic creation; practices of encoding and decoding as a means of deciphering reality; and language in the widest sense as a medium for self- and cultural transformation. Contributors include: Jan Assman, Sara Sviri, Michael Stone, M. Finkelberg, Yigal Bronner, Martin Kern, Brouria Bitton-Ashkelony, Dan Martin, Jonathan Garb, Tom Hunter, David Shulman, and Sergio La Porta.

The Sermon on the mount and spiritual exercises : the making of the Matthean self /

: "What, in Matthew's view, should a human being become and how does one attain that ideal? In The Sermon on the Mount and Spiritual Exercises: The Making of the Matthean Self, George Branch-Trevathan presents a new account of Matthew's ethics and argues that the evangelist presents the Sermon on the Mount as functioning like many other ancient sayings collections, that is, as facilitating transformative work on oneself, or "spiritual exercises," that enable one to realize the evangelist's ideals. The conclusion suggests some implications for our understanding of ethical formation in antiquity and the study of ethics more generally. This will be an essential volume for scholars studying the Gospel of Matthew, early Christian ethics, the relationships between early Christian and ancient philosophical writings, or ethical formation in antiquity".

A social science when understood as a body of knowledge, religion is also marked by discovery, appreciation, orientation, and application-an interplay of the arts and sciences. The Sound Traditions: Studies in Ismaili Texts and Thought /

: The Sound Traditions: Studies in Ismaili Texts and Thought is a collection of Ismail K. Poonawala's articles on Ismaili studies. Divided into three sections, the volume consists of nineteen articles that have been published over a long period of more than forty years. Part One focuses on Ismaili sources and the question of their authorship. The aspects of Ismaili rational discourses are examined in Part Two. Focusing on the scriptural knowledge of Ismaili tradition, Part Three then delves into investigating al-Qāḍī al-Nuʿmān's life and contribution.
