Es wurde nachgewiesen, das theologische Schriften, die in der Zeit der Entstehung der besprochenen Werke entstanden sind, die Ikonographie beeinflusst haben. Ein ähnlicher Einfluss hat auch in den historischen Geschehnissen der entsprechenden Zeit Spuren hinterlassen. Die christlich-jüdische Disputation, die Verfolgung des Talmuds, der Puritanismus, das Tridentinum, die Überlegungen über das Verhältnis zwischen Jesus und seiner Kirche, die wachsende Bedeutung der Teilnahme an der Sonntagsmesse und andere historische und geistesgeschichtliche Phänomene wurden aufgezeigt, die für die Darstellung von Bedeutung sind. Sogar für kleine Details, wie z.B. das Anlehnen von Jesus an einer Säule, wurden für diese Art der Darstellung Beweise gefunden. It has been proved that theological essays written in the time of the creation of those images influenced the iconography. The same influence has been traced in historic events of the relevant time. The Christian/Jewish disputations, the persecution of the Talmud, the Puritanism, the Tridentinum, the reflection on the relationship between Jesus and his church, the increasing importance of the attendance of the Sunday mass and many other historical and spiritual sources have been shown as relevant for the concepts of these works of art. Even for small details, as for instance the leaning Jesus at a column, a historic-theological source could be detected.

The wall paintings from the monastery on Kom H in Dongola /

The volume is a complete pubication of a set of 144 religious paintings from the 11th through the 13th-14th centuries discovered by Polish archaeologists in Dongola, the capital of the Christian Nubian kingdom of Makuria, which existed in the valley of the Middle Nile from the 6th through the 14th century. The murals come from the monastic enclosure on Kom H, from a church, but also from an ascetic monk's cell turned chapel, and two substantial architectural complexes of the Northwest and Southwest Annexes. The author discusses this religious painting assemblage in thematical order, presenting Biblical and apocryphal scenes taken from the Old and New Testament, representations of holy figures including archangels and saints, images of Nubian church and royal dignitaries, and figures of donors that also appeared among the murals. Finally, she deals with compositions, like the unique prothesis and coronation scenes, as well as individual ornamental motifs. The catalogue takes a topographical approach, describing the paintings in detail and illustrating each item as richly as possible. A selection of perspective views of individual buildings, rooms, and walls facilitates quick understanding of the painting decoration systems in the various monastery buildings and annexes, and gives grounds for evaluation of the state of preservation, artistic quality, and iconography of particular paintings.--Page [4] of cover.

Why Tongues? The Initial Evidence Doctrine in North American Pentecostal Churches /

The modern Pentecostal movement has been studied many times in relation to its theological and sociological background. Previous studies, however, have not focused on the disctinctive doctrine of that movement: the teaching that speaking in tongues is the initial physical evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Given that Pentecostals believe that this is a work of grace, such a doctrine seems unlikely to arise, as physical evidence is seldom required or looked for in the life of a believer in relation to any other area of grace. This prompts the question of why such evidence was even being looked for. And yet, within a very short time of its proposal, acceptance of this doctrine was so widespread as to become the hallmark of the movement. Insistence on such a doctrine led to many being asked to leave their denominations, and thus to the founding of other denominations. This book attempts to answer the question: "Why?" And specifically: "Why Tongues?"

A full introduction tackles the issues of greatest interest that arise from the work, including the author's mission as a Hellenist resisting Christian attacks on his discipline. The authors show that there is much more of value in this commentary than has often been supposed, and that the differences between Olympiodorus' approach and those of modern commentators are often illuminating.

The great city of Alexandria is undoubtedly the cradle of Egyptian Christianity, where the Catechetical School was established in the second century and became a leading center in the study of biblical exegesis and theology. According to tradition, St. Mark the Evangelist brought Christianity to Alexandria in the middle of the first century and was martyred in that city, which was to become the residence of Egypt's Coptic patriarchs for nearly eleven centuries. By the fourth century Egyptian monasticism had began to flourish in the Egyptian deserts and countryside. Michael Fishbane is Nathan Cummings Distinguished Service Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of Chicago Divinity School. Trained in biblical studies and the ancient Near East at Brandeis University, he has written on rabbinic interpretation, medieval Jewish philosophy and mysticism, Hasidism, modern Jewish philosophy, and Hebrew poetry. His earlier groundbreaking historical work has provided the foundation for his more recent constructive hermeneutic theology. Among his numerous books are the award-winning Biblical Interpretation in Ancient Israel (1985) and Kiss of God (1994), Biblical Myth and Rabbinic Mythmaking (2003), and Sacred Attunement: A Jewish Theology (2008). Purity and Holiness : The Heritage of Leviticus /

Purity has long been recognized as one of the essential drives which determines humankind's relationship with the holy. Codes of purity and impurity, dealing with such far-ranging topics as 'external stains' and 'inner remorse', represent the physical and 'bodily' side of religious experience and provide the key to the understanding of human orientation to nature, and the structure of society, including even relationships between the sexes. Starting with the Hebrew Bible, a number of articles study some rather neglected passages from both exegetical and cultural-anthropological standpoints. Next, it is shown that the concept of purity is far more central to the New Testament than previously thought. Luke is portrayed as a Jewish-oriented writer. The discussion of purity in Mark is compared with Rabbinical and Qumranic material. Patristic discussions of purity reflect both allegorical and literal interpretations, while rabbinical rulings display a fine sense for detail and realia. Biblical references to illness are interpreted both in Christian and Jewish traditions as a metaphor for immoral behavior. The present collection of studies proceeds far beyond other collections on purity, studying both the medieval and modern periods. Purity rules, in both Christian and Jewish society, do not disappear in the Middle Ages, but become increasingly stronger. Sometimes there appear unexpected and surprising similarities between both societies. Modern society sees a decline in the importance of purity, reflecting a growing ambiguous attitude to the relationship between the body and the holy. A feminist perspective is also provided, examining the intertwined relationship between religion, gender and power. Exegesis, archaeology, liturgy, anthropology and even architecture are all used to study the complex phenomena of purity in their religious and social dimensions from both Christian and Jewish perspectives.
