Muslims in Interwar Europe provides a comprehensive overview of the history of Muslims in interwar Europe. Based on personal and official archives, memoirs, press writings and correspondences, the contributors analyse the multiple aspects of the global Muslim religious, political and intellectual affiliations in interwar Europe. They argue that Muslims in interwar Europe were neither simply visitors nor colonial victims, but that they constituted a group of engaged actors in the European and international space. Contributors are Ali Al Tuma, Egdūnas Račius, Gerdien Jonker, Klaas Stutje, Naomi Davidson, Pieter Sjoerd van Koningsveld, Umar Ryad, Zaur Gasimov and Wiebke Bachmann. Taking its inspiration from the 50th anniversary of the publication of Festinger and others's 1956 seminal and controversial volume When Prophecy Fails , which introduced the notion of \'cognitive dissonance\' as an explanation for how a small group of flying saucer devotees handled the failure of a predicted visit from space aliens, this volume looks at both theoretical and empirical studies of religious groups for whom space beings and civilizations provided an inspiration to prepare for the nearness of events that would trigger \'the end of the world.\' Rather than examining merely the rationales adopted to account for the disappointments associated with such \'failures,\' the core of the present volume seeks to explore the dynamics that inspire not only such beliefs but also the vigorous participation in activities in which adherents engage to prepare for the coming of (or transport to) alien civilizations from \'outer space.\'

Der Band ,,Bausteine zu einer Geschichte der Philosophie an der Universität Graz" enthält die Vorträge eines Symposiums, das aus Anlaß des 100-jährigen Bestandsjubiläums des Grazer Philosophischen Institutes im Herbst 1997 veranstaltet wurde. Außerdem finden sich darin Aufsätze und Studien veröffentlicht, die aus einem Projekt der Forschungsstelle für österreichische Philosophie hervorgegangen sind, welches einer eingehenderen Untersuchung der Geschichte der Philosophie an der Grazer Universität mit besonderer Berücksichtigung der Jesuiten- und Lyzeumszeit gewidmet war; zur Vervollständigung des Gesamtbildes werden schließlich noch weitere, eigens für diesen Sammelband verfaßte Arbeiten über Grazer Philosophen präsentiert. Der frühen historischen Phase sind die ersten drei Beiträge des Bandes gewidmet, wobei in der ausführlichen Studie ,,Zur frühen Philosophielehre an der Grazer Jesuitenuniversität" erstmals der Versuch unternommen wird, die Inhalte des philosophischen Unterrichts, wie er am Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts im Rahmen der ,,ratio studiorum" angeboten wurde, am Beispiel eines vollständigen Kurses darzustellen. Die folgenden Aufsätze behandeln jeweils einzelne, an der Grazer Universität wirkende Lehrer oder befassen sich mit Problemen, die mit Ideen und Lehrmeinungen im Zusammenhang stehen, die von Grazer Philosophen vertreten bzw. angeregt wurden. In einigen Beiträgen werden zudem übergreifende Traditionslinien herausgearbeitet, die sich aus der von Alexius Meinong begründeten sog. ,,Grazer Schule" wie auch aus anderen Impulsen (besonders den von Alois Riehl und Hugo Spitzer ausgehenden) entwickelten. Die Reihe der hier vorgestellten Philosophen wird schließlich bis in die Gegenwart fortgeführt: So zeigen die Beiträge, in denen das philosophische Werk zweier prominenter Denker - nämlich Roderick M. Chisholms und Stephan Körners - gewürdigt wird, sowie die Selbstdarstellungen der Grazer Emeriti Ernst Topitsch und Rudolf Haller das breite und vielfältige Spektrum philosophischen Lehrens und Forschens an der Grazer Universität. Der Band wird mit einer bis zum Jahre 2000 reichenden Gesamtübersicht der Grazer Philosophen abgeschlossen.

This volume of essays is devoted to a careful examination of the importance of methodology in the study of primary religious data. The essays focus on the \'Sacred\' as an ultimate object of descriptive analysis and critical scrutiny on the part of a select number of North American and European methodologists in the study and teaching of the history of religions and its allied disciplines. The central question to which the contributors respond are these: What is the Sacred? Is it a being or a concept of a being; is it a mental state or an objective reality or something else entirely? Can the Sacred be described as an empirical fact, or as a formal rule for religious inquiry? If the Sacred is a valid category in the study and teaching of religion, then what can be said about the antithesis of the sacred, namely the profane or the secular? This volume probes these questions with great care in order to justify a number of ways the Sacred can be construed as an indispensable notion for the study and teaching of religion.

Cet ouvrage entend démontrer qu'une solide culture de l'écriture de l'histoire existait dans la Syrie du 2e/8e siècle, et propose de nouvelles approches méthodologiques afin d'offrir un accès vers cette historiographie perdue, tiraillée entre mémoire et oubli. En étudiant la fabrique des héros omeyyades ou des mythes d'origines abbassides, cette étude s'efforce de mettre au jour les significations successives données à l'histoire syrienne, et d'identifier les différentes strates d'écritures et de réécritures de l'histoire au cours des premiers siècles de l'islam. L'ensemble de ces éléments conduit à proposer une histoire du sens de l'espace syrien, articulée autour de la thématique du pouvoir, qui donne une profonde cohérence à la période, par-delà la césure dynastique de 132/750. By studying the making of Umayyad heroes or Abbasid origins-myths, this book aims to reveal the successive meanings granted to Syrian history, and to identify the various layers of historical writing and rewriting during the first centuries of Islam. Taken together, these elements make possible a history of meanings of the very space of Syria, articulated around power and its expression, which grants a clear coherence to the period, extending well beyond the dynastic caesura of 132/750.
