Coping with the gods : wayward readings in Greek theology /

Inspired by a critical reconsideration of current monolithic approaches to the study of Greek religion, this book argues that ancient Greeks displayed a disquieting capacity to validate two (or more) dissonant, if not contradictory, representations of the divine world in a complementary rather than mutually exclusive manner. From this perspective the six chapters explore problems inherent in: order vs. variety/chaos in polytheism, arbitrariness vs. justice in theodicy, the peaceful co-existence of mono- and polytheistic theologies, human traits in divine imagery, divine omnipotence vs. limitation of power, and ruler cult. Based on an intimate knowledge of ancient realia and literary testimonia the book stands out for its extensive application of relevant perceptions drawn from cultural anthropology, theology, cognitive science, psychology, and linguistics.

With the wealth of colorful characters described in the book of Judges, scholars and general readers alike have a strong fascination for Israel's leaders in its earliest days. Elitism and the Approach to God investigates a historical and cultural dichotomy in European history which has not hitherto been satisfactorily explained Why did so many of the most influential "authorities" of the age insist that the nature and mystery of the divine and of God should not be shared with "the vulgar crowd", that is with the ordinary people, although this appears to be the principal purpose of all other religious teaching throughout the period? Robin Raybould gives examples from the works of more than sixty "authorities" who insisted that the mysteries of the divine should remain secret. He then surveys the attempts of other religious and civic leaders, both pagan and Christian, to investigate, understand and by contrast to share their findings on the nature of God. In a final section he attempts to reconcile these opposing views.

History of Kannur and North Malabar : Kolatiri, Arakkal and Mysore Sultans /

The present work explores the historical origins and early development of Cananore and North Kerala region, till they were annexed by the British in 1792, when the said place became part of Madras Presidency under the British administration. It traces back its journey from the ancient Sangam age, independent Kingdom of Nannan to the rule of the Mushika dynasty during the medieval period, and it ends with the emergence of the Kolatiri dynasty that succeeded the Mushikas. This book places a particular emphasis on the Arakkal family, a branch that originated from the Kolatiris. The Arakkals controlled the large tracts of land including the Laccadive Islands. As Dutch expended its influence in Malabar, at the expense of the Portuguese, the Arakkals successfully asserted their independence in Malabar. The arrival of the Mysore Sultans helped the Arakkals to shake off the domination of the Kolatiris. However, the defeat of Tipu Sultan at the hands of the English East India Company in 1792, sealed the fate of the Arakkals, as well as the Kolatiris. The author has put to good use her knowledge of Malayalam, French, and English sources to reconstitute the history of Kannur and north Malabar until 1792.

Amor Dei , "love of God" raises three questions: How do we know God is love? How do we experience love of God? How free are we to love God? This book presents three kinds of love, worldly, spiritual, and divine to understand God's love. The work begins with Augustine's Confessions highlighting his Manichean and Neoplatonic periods before his conversion to Christianity. Augustine's confrontation with Pelagius anticipates the unresolved disputes concerning God's love and free will. In the sixteenth-century the Italian humanist, Gasparo Contarini introduces the notion of "divine amplitude" to demonstrate how God's goodness is manifested in the human agent. Pierre de Bérulle, Guillaume Gibieuf, and Nicolas Malebranche show connections with Contarini in the seventeenth-century controversies relating free will and divine love. In response to the free will dispute, the Scottish philosopher, William Chalmers, offers his solution. Cornelius Jansen relentlessly asserts his anti-Pelagian interpretation of Augustine stirring up more controversy. John Norris, Malebranche's English disciple, exchanges his views with Mary Astell and Damaris Masham. In the tradition of Cambridge Platonism, Ralph Cudworth conveys a God who "sweetly governs." The organization of sections represents the love of God in ascending-descending movements demonstrating that, "human love is inseparable from divine love."
