In Memories of an Impossible Future: Mehdi Akhavān Sāles and the Poetics of Time Marie Huber traces the quest for a modern language of poetry through different figurations of temporality in the works of one of Iran's foremost poets. Akhavān is placed in dialogue with European thinkers and emerges as an original voice in world literature. Chapters examine aspects of rhythm and metaphor, messianism and historicity, and functions of time in Akhavān's lyric and epic poems. Through a range of close readings Huber seeks to understand Akhavān's texts as crystallisations of a historical moment, both rooted in the Persian tradition and pointing beyond it. Her analyses combine attention to philological detail with meditations on the philosophical significance of Akhavān's poetics.

This volume examines orality and literacy in the ancient Greek and Roman world through a range of perspectives and in various genres. Four essays on the Homeric epics present recent research into performative aspects of language, cognitive theory and oral composition, a re-evaluation of Parry's oral-formulaic theory, and a new perspective on the poem's transmission. These are complemented by studies of the oral nature of Greek proverbial expressions, and of poetic authority within a fluid oral tradition. Two essays consider the significance of the written word in a predominantly oral culture, in relation to star calendars and to Panathenaic inscriptions. Finally, two chapters consider the ongoing influence of oral tradition in the ancient novel and in Roman declamation. These essays illustrate the importance of considering ancient texts in the context of fluctuating oral and literate influences.

"Whoever loves passionately remains chaste and dies, dies a martyr". Muġulṭāy (d. 762/1361) bases The Clear and Eloquent on Those Lovers Who Became Martyrs on this apocryphal hadith, which was forged in the 3rd/9th century. It enables him to include in the sphere of Islam a passionate, deadly and profane love for a creature and therefore to transform it into a quest for spiritual perfection under the aegis of ǧihād. This was a daring thesis and the treatise was censored and banned from sale in the markets of Cairo. In this essay, Monica Balda-Tillier provides a powerful reconstruction of the conceptual framework that led to the writing of Muġulṭāy's treatise. By highlighting the strategies of argument and narrative adopted by the author to defend the martyrdom of love against its detractors, she conducts a meticulous investigation into the contents of a work that led its author to prison
