Sensing Salvation in the Gospel of John : The Embodied, Sensory Qualities of Participation in the I Am Sayings /

: Recent scholarship focused on the role of embodiment within cognition and communication reminds us that part of how we "know" is through our physical senses. We only know the softness of a kitten by touching its fur, or the tastiness of bread by eating. How might this influence our understanding of biblical texts, such as Jesus's claim, "I am the bread of life," and the invitation to eat? This study explores the I am sayings of John's Gospel, their sensory elements providing an imaginative entry into the narrative and contributing tangible value to the participatory theology of the Fourth Gospel.

Mark's memory resources and the controversy stories (Mark 2:1-3:6) : an application of the frame...

: This book is a study of the New Testament using the insights of modern linguistics. Its principal concern, above all, is to examine how the Gospel of Mark, produced in an oral-aural culture, may be illuminated by frame theory from cognitive linguistics, a linguistic theory in which the meaning of a word, phrase, clause, sentence, paragraph and thematic unit can only be properly understood against the background of a particular body of knowledge and assumptions. The reason this theory is particulary useful for understanding Mark's ancient text is because as an oral-aural narrative it heavily relies on human memory (cognitive) resources; and so the cognitive theory leads us into a better understanding of ways in which the text is communicated in terms of cognitive processing.

Mark at the threshold : applying Bakhtinian categories to Markan characterisation /

: The discussion concerning Markan characterisation (and Markan genre) can be helpfully informed by Bakhtinian categories. This book uses the twin foci of chronotope and carnival to examine specific characters in terms of different levels of dialogue. Various passages in Mark are examined, and thresholds are noted between interindividual character-zones, and between the hearing-reader and text-voices. Several generic contacts are shown to have shaped the text's 'genre-memory' - in particular, the Graeco-Roman popular literature of the ancient world. The resultant picture is of an earthy, populist Gospel whose "voices" resonate with the "vulgar" classes, and whose spirituality is refreshingly relevant to everyday concerns.

The language and style of the Gospel of Mark : an edition of C.H. Turner's "Notes on Marcan usage" together with other comparable studies /

: C.H. Turner pioneered the study of the language and style of Mark's Gospel in a series of articles in the 1920s entitled \'Notes on Marcan usage\'. All but one appeared in the Journal of Theological Studies - one further \'Note\' is published now for the first time. It is Turner's articles, reprinted with editorial additions, that form the backbone of the present book. Comparable articles by those who have followed in C.H. Turner's footsteps (G.D. Kilpatrick, J.K. Elliott, N. Turner) are also included. Some of these are published for the first time. These studies into the language, style and usage are relevant for work not only on exegesis, but also on the textual criticism of the Gospel and on the synoptic problem. This volume makes these essays accessible in one place and these together with the new studies form a convenient reference tool for Marcan scholars.

A study of the life and works of Athanasius Kircher, "Germanus incredibilis" : with a selection of his unpublished correspondence and an annotated translation of his autobiography...

: Athanasius Kircher, a German Jesuit in 17th-century Rome, was an enigma. Intensely pious and a prolific author, he was also a polymath fascinated with everything from Egyptian hieroglyphs to the tiny creatures in his microscope. His correspondence with popes, princes and priests was a window into the restless energy of the period. It showed first-hand the seventeenth-century's struggle for knowledge in astronomy, microscopy, geology, chemistry, musicology, Egyptology, horology... The list goes on. Kircher's books reflect the mind-set of 17th-century scholars - endless curiosity and a substantial larding of naiveté: Kircher scorned alchemy as the wishful thinking of charlatans, yet believed in dragons. His life and correspondence provide a key to the transition from the Middle Ages to a new scientific age. This book, though unpublished, has been long quoted and referred to. Awaited by scholars and specialists of Kircher, it is finally available with this edition.

Der Platoniker Tauros in der Darstellung des Aulus Gellius /

: Aulus Gellius' accounts of his studies in Athens are a major source for the personality of Taurus the Platonic philosopher of the 2nd century A.D. and besides, give important insights into the history of Platonic school of that time. The present work puts together Gellius' reports on the Middle Platonist for the first time and - by its detailed commentary - offers a new understanding of contents, form and methods of his philosophical instructions, of the relationship between teacher and students, and of student life in the 2nd century A.D. in general. By this means numerous topics in ancient philosophy, philology, science, and pedagogics are dealt with. Finally the results thus gained are combined with all remaining literary and epigraphic evidence, so that a lively portrait of Taurus as a philosophical teacher emerges. A collection of testimonies and fragments concerning Taurus' life and work, a comprehensive bibliography, and indices complete the work.

Tell Atrib 1985-1995, part IV : Faience objects /

: Egyptian faience of the Ptolemaic and Roman periods has not enjoyed the same degree of research as the earlier material. This volume, which presents an analysis of faience object from Polish-Egyptian excavations at Tell Atrib, ancient Athribis, will help to remedy this problem. Excavations in Tell Atrib revealed traces of local production of faience objects. They include vessels, figurines, amulets and ushebti recovered from three major strata dated to different phases of the Ptolemaic period. Their provenance from securely dated contexts allowed for tracing typological changes occurring over time, which is of particular importance for studying the history of local faience production. These observations give grounds for analyzing the sources of influence and inspiration of local artisans. Distribution of faience finds at the site gives certain clues as to the role of these objects in everyday and religious life of the inhabitants of the ancient city.

The reshaped min d Searle, the biblical writers, and Christ's blood /

: A number of biblical scholars and theologians have had interest in speech act theory ever since J.L. Austin (1911-1960) outlined how a speaker can perform actions with words. John R. Searle has made a significant contribution to speech act theory after Austin by rooting his philosophy of language in the philosophy of mind; however, Searle's categories remain largely under or misrepresented in theological circles. In this book, the author works exclusively with Searle's categories to examine five NT texts on the 'blood-of-Christ' motif (Rom 3:25; Heb 9:12; John 6:52-59; Rev 1:5b-6; Rev 7:13-14). The main result is a broader understanding of Christ's blood in a literal sense rather than simply as a metaphor for his death.
