Weapons of words: intertextual competition in Babylonian poetry : a study of Anzū, Enūma eliš, and Erra and Išum /
:
In Weapons of Words: Intertextual Competition in Babylonian Poetry Selena Wisnom offers an in-depth literary study of three poems central to Babylonian culture: Anzû, Enūma eliš, and Erra and Išum . Fundamentally interconnected, each poem strives to out-do its predecessors and competes to establish its protagonist, its ideals, and its poetics as superior to those that came before them. The first of its kind in Assyriology, Weapons of Words explores the rich nuances of these poems by unravelling complex networks of allusion. Through a sophisticated analysis of literary techniques, Selena Wisnom traces developments in the Akkadian poetic tradition and demonstrates that intertextual readings are essential for a deeper understanding of Mesopotamian literature.

Sacred words orality, literacy, and religion /
:
A prevalent view in the current scholarship on ancient religions holds that state religion was primarily performed and transmitted in oral forms, whereas writing came to be associated with secret, private and marginal cults, especially in the Greek world. In Roman times, religions would have become more and more bookish, starting with the Sibylline books and the Annales Maximi of the Roman priests and culminating in the canonical gospels of the Christians. It is the aim of this volume to modify this view or, at least, to challenge it. Surveying the variety of ways in which different types of texts and oral discourse were involved in ancient Greek and Roman religions, the contributions to this volume show that oral and written forms were in use for both Greek and Roman state and private religions.

L'incoronazione celeste nel mondo Bizantinon : politica, cerimoniale, numismatica e arti figurative /
:
This study deals with the iconographic theme of imperial Byzantine 'heavenly coronation', or André Grabar's couronnement symbolique, with particular attention to fine arts and numismatics. This theme, along with the rituals of imperial investiture, represents the concept of divine kingship in figurative terms, a significant ideological premise for Byzantine theocracy.

Word becomes image : openwork vessels as a reflection of late antique transformation /
:
This study presents a diachronic investigation providing a rich case study as well as an approach tracing the contours of a category of Roman material culture defined by the Roman period technique of openwork carving. As the first comprehensive assemblage of openwork vessels from Classical to late Antiquity, this work offers primary evidence documenting a key example of the fundamental shift from naturalism to abstraction in which inscriptions are transformed and word becomes image. A glass blower herself, Hallie Meredith poses questions about process, tactility and reception providing a clear picture of the original contexts of production and reception demonstrated by the Roman technique of openwork carving.

Leaving words to remember : Greek mourning and the advent of literacy /
:
This volume examines the influence of literacy on the development of different genres of mourning in ancient Greece. The oral tradition of lament in the Homeric poems forms the point of departure for close readings of epigraphic material and written texts commemorating the dead in the archaic and classical periods, including grave epigrams, threnoi, tragedy, and Athenian epitaphioi . These texts reveal the non-linear development of Greek literacy and offer insight into the ongoing influence of lament in diverse poetic genres and the evolving uses of death and mourning in different media. In particular, the discussion focuses on the role of writing in commemorating soldiers and the evolution of the written memorial into a historical and civic medium of communication.

Homer's winged words : the evolution of early Greek epic diction in the light of oral theory /
:
For over 2500 years many of the most learned scholars of the Greek language have concerned themselves with the topic of etymology. The most productive source of difficult, even inexplicable, words was Homer's 28,000 verses of epic poetry. Steve Reece proposes an approach to elucidating the meanings of some of these difficult words that finds its inspiration primarily in Milman Parry's oral-formulaic theory. He proposes that during the long period of oral transmission acoustic uncertainties, especially regarding word boundaries, were continually occurring: a bard uttered one collocation of words, but his audience thought it heard another. The consequent resegmentation of words and phrases is the probable cause of some of the etymologically inexplicable words in our Homeric texts.

It highlights the use of visual media, such as images and videos, to enhance our understanding of complex concepts and phenomena. By integrating visual research into education, we can gain a comprehensive understanding of abstract ideas, leading to better retention and application of knowledge. Additionally, visual research methods provide multiple perspectives on social phenomena, motivating us to initiate social change. The book features contributions from scholars worldwide, who discuss various methodological perspectives and applications of visual research in education. Topics include visual inquiry methodology, techniques for analyzing visual data, and the use of photovoice. Each chapter reviews the literature on a specific visual method, addresses methodological challenges, strengths, and limitations, and explores its contributions to education research. Overall, this book offers valuable insights into the power and potential of visual research methods in education, providing a platform for scholars to share their expertise and promote the use of visual methods in educational research.
