Sôfer mahîr : essays in honour of Adrian Schenker /

: The essays that comprise this volume in honor of Adrian Schenker address a variety of issues and topics in the field of textual criticism and the textual history of the Hebrew Bible. Except for the Book of Kings, the contributors are editors of individual Biblical books for the new Biblia Hebraica Quinta . The topics of the essays range from assessments of the overall textual situation for a particular book to investigations of translation technique to studies of particularities in the Leningrad Codex and its Masorah. Most books of the Hebrew Scriptures are treated in one of the essays.

The Abu Bakr cemetery at Giza /

: "The present volume reflects the work of the joint expedition of Cairo University and Brown University to record and publish the tombs uncovered on behalf of Cairo University by Prof. Abdel-Moneim Abu Bakr from 1949 through 1953, but never published. The loss of field records and lack of a map of the site meant that new, salvage excavation had to be undertaken. A total of six seasons, from 2000-2006 resulted in the clearing, remapping, and recording of the monuments in the cemetery. Abu Bakr Cemetery is of particular interest because the majority of mastaba tombs belong to relatively low-ranking individuals. Thus they have the potential to she light on the social status of Egypt's working classes"--

Dīwān Abū Bakr al-Khwārazmī : Maʿa dirāsa li-ʿaṣrihi wa-ḥayātihi wa-shiʿrihi /

: Born and raised in Khwārazm, Abū Bakr Khwārazmī (d. 383/993) grew up to become an authority on the Arabic language, despite his foreign origin. He spent his adult life away from his homeland, at the courts of the powerful of his time. We thus find him in Aleppo enjoying the generosity of Sayf al-Dawla, in Bukhara living off the largesse of the vizier al-Balʿamī, or in Nishapur, earning his keep by singing the praises of Amīr Aḥmad al-Mīkālī. Abū Bakr's life was not without conflict, which may partly explain his wanderings. He is mostly admired as a gifted writer of letters, which he composed in rhymed, ornate prose. It is said that he died soon after he lost a contest with upcoming talent Badīʿ al-Zamān al-Hamadhānī. His poetry was less well received and thusfar never published. Whether this was deservedly the case, we can now decide for ourselves by consulting the divan's present, first edition.

Siyah bar safīd : Majmūʿa-yi guftārhā u yād dāshthā dar zamīna-yi kitābshināsī u nuskhashināsī /

: This is a collection of research notes, personal recollections, interviews with colleagues, and professional letters, sent and received, compiled by the Pakistani specialist of Islamic manuscripts ʿĀrif Nawshāhī (b. 1955). They cover a period of over 35 years of professional activity (1974-2011), mostly in Pakistan, India, and Iran. The work consists of five chapters, of which the research notes contained in chapters one and two are perhaps the most informative ones. Especially interesting is the information on the holdings of some of the libraries in India and Pakistan in chapter one and the codicological notes in chapter two. The notes, memoirs, anecdotes, interviews, and letters of chapters three to five give a fine impression of how this prominent scholar experienced the world of manuscripts and codicologists in which he was active for so many years. And here too, useful information may be found, especially in his long series of very short notes in chapter three.

The letter of Mara bar Sarapion in context : proceedings of the symposium held at Utrecht University, 10-12 December 2009 /

: The Letter of Mara bar Sarapion to his son - preserved in a single Syriac manuscript (7th. century CE) - still speaks to its readers, evocatively depicting the dramatic situation of a nobleman imprisoned after the Roman capture of Samosata, capital of Commagene. The letter is best known today for a passage on the "wise king of the Jews," which may be one of the earliest pagan testimonies concerning Jesus Christ. Ongoing controversy over the letter's date, nature, and purpose has, however, led to the widespread neglect of this intriguing document. In the present volume, Merz and Tieleman have brought together cutting-edge research from an interdisciplinary team of leading experts that significantly advances our appreciation of the letter and its historical context.
