Sacred tropes : Tanakh, New Testament, and Qur'an as literature and culture /

Contemporary sacred text scholarship has been stimulated by a number of intersecting trends: a surging interest in religion, sacred texts, and inspirational issues; burgeoning developments in and applications of literary theories; intensifying academic focus on diverse cultures whether for education or scholarship. Although much has been written individually about Tanakh, New Testament, and Qur'an, no collection combines an examination of all three. Sacred Tropes interweaves Tanakh, New Testament, and Qur'an essays. Contributors collectively and also often individually use mixed literary approaches instead of the older single theory strategy. Appropriate for classroom or research, the essays utilize a variety of literary theoretical lenses including environmental, cultural studies, gender, psychoanalytic, ideological, economic, historicism, law, and rhetorical criticisms through which to examine these sacred works.

Grâce à l'analyse méticuleuse des manuscrits coraniques de l'Institut Al Bīrūnī, Marie Efthymiou décrit les mutations des techniques de fabrication du livre, renouvelant la connaissance du papier de Samarcande et révélant le dynamisme de Kokand comme centre de production. Un questionnement novateur des usages du livre en restitue la place dans la société et les pratiques de dévotion. In L'art du livre en Asie centrale de la fin du XVIe au début du XXe siècle , Marie Efthymiou sheds light on the rich cultural heritage of Central Asia, a still relatively unknown region. Traditionally considered part of a single Persian cultural domain, it in fact bears witness to a rich convergence of cultural transmissions and trade routes, with strong external influences from North India as well as strong local characteristics. By a meticulous analysis of the Quranic manuscripts of the Al Bīrūnī Institute of Oriental Studies, Marie Efthymiou depicts the technical changes of bookmaking, providing new evidence on Samarcand paper and revealing Kokand as a major centre of production. An innovative approach of the manuscripts' uses traces their place in society and in the everyday life of worshippers.

This work focuses on Anglican mission and women's education in Palestine in the period from 1888 till 1948. As part of the \'enlightenment movement\' the project was initiated by British women educational pioneers, who influenced women to carry out the creed of academic training for girls also in colonial areas. While the educational profile of the pre-World War One schools mainly focused on modernisation of the domestic role, during the British Mandate the highly educated Anglican women teachers had two aims for their work: To create a peaceful multi-cultural environment in a society characterised by religious and ethnic strife and secondly to introduce a modern feminine ideal to Christian, Muslim and Jewish middle-and upper class girls. This study contributes to our knowledge of the Anglican missionary project, the role of women misionaries/educators and the history of Palestine.

Was there, in different periods of Egyptian history, a clearly defined political and cultural western border? How was the western limit of Egyptian territory perceived and experienced by the central power and local populations? Keeping these questions in mind, the proceedings of the international conference held in Cairo on 2-3 December 2017 explore the western margins of Egypt along four lines: 1) definition, conception, representation; 2) occupation, control, administration; 3) economy; 4) populations, networks, religion. They allow us to sketch a portrait of a key region of Egypt from Antiquity to the Middle Ages. Once the phase of territorial fixation of the Egyptian state was completed, the low population density in the Western Delta and the absence of a real threat did not encourage the definition and defense of an actual western border. However, the arrival of new Libyan groups at the gates of Egypt during the Ramesside period was a turning point. The emergence of the Saite Dynasty placed this region in a new dynamic--that of border with the Greek world and pioneer front--which prefigured the development of this territory under the Ptolemies. During the Roman period, Egypt was part of an empire that extended much further west and whose decision-making center was outside the country, which changed the status of the western limit. Still, the nomadic incursions into the Great Oasis at the end of the period show that the question of the frontier remained an issue. This issue continued after the Arab conquest when Egypt became again part of a vast empire.

"Since the 1990s there has been an emphasis on the study of ancient Israelite prophecy in its ancient Near East context. Prophecy in the Ancient Near East is the first book-length study that compares prophecy in the ancient Near East by focusing on texts from Mari, the Neo-AssyrianState Archives, and the Hebrew Bible. The author analyzes prophecy in each culture independently before comparisons are made. This method demonstrates how prophecy is a part of the wider system of divination, but also shows where scholarship has unduly imported concepts found in one corpus to the other two.
