"How and by which means did material commodities and knowledge circulate among the Great Powers, lesser independent states and vassal kingdoms of the Aegean, Anatolia, Syria, the Levant, Mesopotamia, and Egypt? Where did the different raw materials and finished products come from, and under which conditions and by whom were they negotiated? Is it possible to determine regions of production and direct and indirect channels of distribution? Which rules were applied in the supra-regional exchange? Which possibilities and which obligations did the vasssal kingdoms of the Levant have towards the Great Powers of the Hittites, Assyrians and Egyptians? Which role did the Mycenaean palaces of the Aegean play within the "international" network of exchanges? Can we develop a model of political and economic interaction? This book analyzes the defense policy of Athens in the period after the Peloponnesian War. In order to counter new offensive strategies and to protect vital local sources of revenue, the Athenians instituted a system of territorial defense, based on massive frontier fortresses and a sophisticated signal network. Individual chapters treat Athens' postwar economic situations, the development of Greek military science, the rise of a defensive mentality among the Athenian citizens, theorectical literature on defense, and Athens' military establishment. A major section is devoted to detailed descriptions of the land routes into Attica and of all ancient fortresses, towers, and military highways in the frontier zones. Concluding chapters demonstrate how the defense system worked in practic.

The Cairo season is coining to an end, at least as far as the Center is concerned. In a few days this office will be closed until September and I shall move to Alexandria to work at the Graeco-Roman Museum there for a month or so. The past eight and a half months seem to have gone by very quickly, but in retrospect they were rich and rewarding and full of pleasant interruptions which made the routine of research, office work, and field trips a rather varied experience. For one thing, we now have a group of Members, admittedly few in number, here in Cairo who are genuinely interested in the antiquity and art of the Nile Valley and there is hope that some day, in the not too distant future insha'allah, a permanent institution will serve American historians and archaeologists in this part of the Near East. There also was the never-ending stream of casual visitors who came from far away to ask advice as to the best way in which to get around in Egypt or to tell about their experiences. Among them we had a young American student from the Free University of Berlin who, without knowing any Arabic, traveled up and down the country for several weeks without encountering any difficulties or having trouble in finding a place to sleep. There were the Sunday excursions when peaceful temple ruins were swarming with children, and there were the quiet happy afternoons when this ,writer walked the length and breadth of northern Mitrahine with John Dimick in order to learn something about the topography of ancient Memphis from one who knew his levels and map coordinates. The group of Fulbright grantees is breaking up, and some of them have left already, and a few of our friends in the U.S. Information Service are being transferred or are going on home leave.

Genealogy and Status : Hereditary Office Holding and Kinship in North China under Mongol Rule /

By shedding light on a long-forgotten epigraphic genre that flourished in North China during the Mongol Empire, or Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), Genealogy and Status explores the ways the conquered Chinese people understood and represented the alien Mongol ruling principles through their own cultural tradition. This epigraphic genre, which this book collectively calls "genealogical steles," was quite unique in the history of Chinese epigraphy. Northern Chinese officials commissioned these steles exclusively to record a family's extensive genealogy, rather than the biography or achievements of an individual. Tomoyasu Iiyama shows how the rise of these steles demonstrates that Mongol rule fundamentally affected how northern Chinese families defined, organized, and commemorated their kinship. Because most of these inscriptions are in Classical Chinese, they appear to be part of Chinese tradition. In fact, they reflect a massive social change in Chinese society that occurred because of Mongol rule in China. The evolution of genealogical steles delineates how local elites, while thinking of themselves as the heirs of traditional Chinese culture, fully accommodated to Mongol imperial rule and became instead one of its cornerstones in eastern Eurasia. This book reviews the nature and social function of Attic fine pottery imported to the Greek colony of Phanagoria in the Taman Peninsula, southern Russia. The first part of the book reviews the history of research at Phanagoria, and presents a fully illustrated catalogue of Attic imports from the excavations of the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1971-1996) and latterly the University of London. A concluding section examines imports from the city and its cemeteries in the wider context of the Bosporan kingdom , drawing together a large collection of comparanda especially from the cities of the Taman Peninsula. Via comparison of data from Athens, the northern Aegean, Ionia, and the northern Black Sea, the changing role of Attic pottery in Black Sea trade is assessed.
