Quel est le statut de l'art et de l'affectivité esthétique chez Michel Henry ? Le champ occupé par l'art dans l'économie de la phénoménologie matérielle est-il le lieu le plus propre pour l'exploration immanente de l'apparaître et l'auscultation de l'affectivité transcendantale de la vie ? Ce livre offre un repérage de quelques pistes remarquables à partir desquelles le besoin de poser les jalons d'une esthétique matérielle se fait suffisamment pressant pour qu'on y prête attention. C'est pour frayer cette voie et faire les premiers pas dans la direction qu'elle infléchit que les études ici réunies engagent, chacune à sa manière, l'examen du statut de l'art chez Michel Henry : du côté de la peinture bien sûr, mais aussi dans les champs du langage, de la littérature, de la danse, de l'architecture et de la musique. L'ensemble est précédé par un texte de Michel Henry, consacré à l'œuvre picturale de Pierre Magré. What is the status of art and aesthetic affectivity in Michel Henry? Is the place occupied by art within the economy of his material phenomenology the most appropriate site for the immanent exploration of appearing and the auscultation of the transcendental affectivity of life? This book locates some remarkable avenues through which the need to prepare the ground for a material aesthetic becomes urgent enough to be given attention. In order to clear this path and take the first steps in the direction it leads, the studies gathered here, each in its own way, are engaged in the study of the status of art in Michel Henry, from the perspective of painting, of course, but also the fields of language, literature, dance, architecture and music. The collection is preceded by an essay by Michel Henry, devoted to the painting of Pierre Magré.

Time and eternity are concepts that have occupied an important place within Jewish mystical thought. This present volume gives pride of place to these concepts, and is one of the first works to bring together diverse voices on the subject. It offers a multivalent picture of the topic of time and eternity, not only by including contributions from an array of academics who are leaders in their fields, but by proposing six diverse approaches to time and eternity in Jewish mysticism: the theoretical approach to temporality, philosophical definitions, the idea of time and pre-existence, the idea of historical time, the idea of experiential time, and finally, the idea of eternity beyond time. This multivocal treatment of Jewish mysticism and time as based on variant academic approaches is novel, and it should lay the groundwork for further discussion and exploration.

The Syntax and Semantics of Wh-Clauses in Classical Greek : Relatives, Interrogatives, Exclamatives /

Adapting tools recently developed in general linguistics and dwelling on a solid corpus study, this book offers the first comprehensive view on Classical Greek wh -clauses since Monteil (1963) and scrutinizes how wh -items (ὅς, ὅστις, τίς) distribute across the different clause types. False ideas are discarded (e.g., there are no τίς relative clauses, ὅστις does not take over ὅς' functions). This essay furthermore teases apart actual neutralization and so-far-unknown subtle distinctions. Who knew that ὅστις is featured in three different types of appositive clauses? In the interrogative domain, an analysis is given of what licenses ὅς to pop in and τίς to pop out. Tackling these topics and more, this essay draws a coherent picture of the wh -clause system, whose basis is the notion of (non)identification.

In this book, Thomas Zöckler treats the Gospel of Thomas as a witness to a distinctive early branch of the tradition of Jesus' teachings which shows a variety of theological notions and ideas. The author first considers Thomas' position within the early sayings tradition, summarizing the main arguments for this gospel's independence from the Synoptic Gospels, and comparing in detail the versions of the four wisdom sayings in Thomas and Q. In a second part, Zöckler identifies three theological motifs that dominate Thomas' sayings collection (Searching and Finding, Life and Death, Twoness and Oneness) and interprets the selected sayings which substantiate the relevance and significance of these motifs. This detailed exegetical investigation contributes to the growing recognition that teachings which the Gospel of Thomas ascribes to Jesus, many of which do not fit the Synoptic Gospel's theology and picture of Jesus, clearly belonged nevertheless to an early stage of the sayings tradition. At the same time, Zöckler's work adds to our growing understanding of the meaning of these teachings.

Religion in Livy /

This book examines the use that Livy made of religious topics, and shows how this fits in with other aspects of his narrative. The author shows how 'Livy's views of religion' depend less on personal belief than on the refinement of his narrative technique. He looks at the history decade by decade, and demonstrates that there are radical differences between different sections: in some Livy uses large-scale religious themes, but in others he deliberately avoids them. By a systematic analysis of Livy's narrative patterns and comparison with other ancient versions, it is proved that this is not simply due to subject-matter, but reflects a development in Livy's handling of his material. This profound difference between decades throws doubt on much of the standard picture of Livy: it also points to a need to revise notions of 'Augustan religious ideology'.
