This article surveys the role that pigs, goats, and sheep played at the tomb-builders’ community of Deir el-Medîna. Pigs were probably present on site, but the presence of sheep and goats is more problematic. The same term, anx, refers to both animals, but the dry environment of the village is far more suitable for goats. Goats (and occasionally sheep) may have been kept at the village, herded near the Nile on their owners’ behalf, or simply bought as needed. Pigs may have been penned or allowed to roam freely. The provisions these animals required, their meat and milk yields, other products they generated, the social setting of animal ownership, the prices paid for them, and the possible hazards of keeping them, are also considered. doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.5913/jarce.54.2018.a013

In early eleventh century Zaragoza, the eminent Jewish scholar Abū l-Walīd Marwān ibn Janāḥ wrote a glossary containing almost 1100 entries, entitled Kitāb al-Talkhīṣ . This important text, considered lost until recently, contains Arabic and foreign-language names of simple drugs, weights, measures, and other medical terms. In the present volume, the Kitāb al-Talkhīṣ is edited and translated for the first time by Gerrit Bos and Fabian Käs. In detailed commentaries, the editors identify the substances mentioned in the Talkhīṣ . They also elaborate on the role of the text in the history of Arabic glossaries concerned with medical nomenclature. Special attention is paid to Ibn Janāḥ's Ibero-Romance phytonyms, analysed in depth by Mailyn Lübke and Guido Mensching.

This book is dedicated to an exceptional and almost forgotten figure of European medieval history, Queen Elisabeth of Luxembourg. Through the story of her life, the author of this volume examines one of the most dramatic periods of Hungarian medieval history (1437-1442), when after the death of Emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg, the kingdom lacked a strong monarch. Although the primary focus of this book is Queen Elisabeth, much attention is also paid to her husband, the Duke of Austria and the Roman-German King Albert II of Habsburg. The author reconstructs his short reign in the Kingdom of Hungary on the basis of hitherto unpublished sources, as well as Queen Elisabeth's struggle for the Hungarian crown, which she finally won at the cost of her own life. Through the inclusion of discussions on topics such as the status of women, hygiene, medicine, piety, and travel, the author sheds light not just on the details of Elisabeth's life, but also on life during this period of medieval history more generally.
