The Treaties of Carlowitz (1699) : a Antecedents, Course and Consequences /

: The Treaties of Carlowitz (1699) includes recent studies on the Lega Sacra War of 1683-1699 against the Ottoman Empire, the Peace treaties of Carlowitz (1699), and on the general impact of the conflict upon Modern Europe and the Balkans. With its contributions written by well-known international specialists in the field, the volume demonstrates that sometimes important conflicts tend to be forgotten with time, overshadowed by more spectacular wars, peace congresses or diplomatic alliances. The "Long War" of 1683-1699 is a case in point. By re-thinking and re-writing the history of the conflict and the subsequent peacemaking between a Christian alliance and the Ottoman state at the end of the 17th century, new perspectives, stretching into the present era, for the history of Europe, the Balkans and the Near East are brought into discussion. The missionary self-perception of Pentecostal/Charismatic church leaders from the global South in Europe : bringing back the Gospel /

: In a situation of growing interest in the religion of migrants, there are still few publications dealing with pentecostal and charismatic Christians from the global South and the churches they have been starting all over Europe. This ground-breaking study, based on extensive interviews conducted during a nine-year research period encompassing more than 100 churches, describes how pentecostal /charismatic migrant pastors live out their pastoral role, how they construct their missionary biographies, and how they conceptualize and practice evangelism. The result is a comprehensive portrait of an immigrant group which does not define itself as victimized and in need of assistance, but as expatriate agents with a clear calling and a vision to change the continent they now live inches.

Morocco's Africa Policy /

: Since the advent of the reign of Mohammed VI in 1999, Morocco has deployed a new continental foreign policy. The Kingdom aspires to be recognized as an emerging African power in its identity as well as in its space of projection. In order to meet these ambitions, the diplomatic apparatus is developing and modernizing, while a singular role identity is emerging around the notion of the "golden mean". This study presents, on an empirical level, the conditions of the elaboration and conduct of this Africa policy, and analyzes, on a theoretical level, the evolution of the Moroccan role identity in the international system.

An Unmanaged World: A Philosophical Study of Global Dynamics /

: This book is devoted to the philosophical analysis of key problems of world development and prospects for global management. Based on both rich factual material and a holistic understanding of the world, the author shows how modern globalization has shifted the arena of interaction from individual territories and regions to the entire space of the Earth. The global problems resulting from this shift have led to a weakly regulated and unmanaged world, one that gives rise to acute contradictions for the world community. How can we improve this situation? According to the author, we must learn to "think globally and act together." This study argues that humanity needs a global civilizational revolution aimed at forming a planetary civil society and initiating a shift within international relations, from the "right of power" to the "power of law."

"A Prophet like Moses" (Deut 18:15, 18): The Origin, History, and Influence of the Mosaic Prophetic Succession /

: This book provides a comprehensive study of the interpretation of Deuteronomy's concept of the prophet like Moses. It traces the origin, history, and influence of the Mosaic prophetic succession in the Hebrew Bible, Early Judaism, and the New Testament.
In this book, DeJong explores Deuteronomy's redefinition of prophecy in Mosaic terms. He traces the history of Deuteronomy's concept of the prophet like Moses from the seventh century BCE to the first century CE, and demonstrates the ways in which Jewish and Christian texts were influenced by and responded to Deuteronomy's creation of a Mosaic norm for prophetic claims. This wide-ranging discussion illuminates the development of normative discourses in Judaism and Christianity, and illustrates the far-reaching impact of Deuteronomy's thought.

: This book is a study of Sulla's policies in Italy and in the Greek East. Its main aim is to show how Sulla revived Rome's alliances with the local elites at a critical moment for the survival of her Mediterranean hegemony. The discussion calls into play a wide range of political, economic and religious issues, and the argument is developed from three complementary standpoints: role of elites, administration, and ideology. Sulla, the Elites and the Empire deals with both the impact of a prominent individual and the impact of the Roman empire. It sets outs to offer a new understanding of Sulla and his age and, more generally, to contribute to the understanding of the late Roman Republic.

Reanimating Qohelet's Contradictory Voices, Studies of Open-Ended Discourse on Wisdom in Ecclesiastes.

: Ecclesiastes, also known as Qohelet, is a fascinating text filled with intriguing contradictions, such as wisdom's beneficial consequences, God's justice, and wisdom's superiority over pleasure. Under the paradigm of modernism, the contradictions in the book have been regarded as problems to be harmonized or explained away. In Reanimating Qohelet's Contradictory Voices , Jimyung Kim, drawing on Mikhail Bakhtin's insights, offers an alternative reading that embraces the contradictions as they stand. For Kim, Qohelet's or the protagonist's contradictory consciousness is dialogically constructed by his contact with a complex web of discourses. Instead of harmonizing them or explaining them away, Kim identifies various dialogic voices available to Qohelet and demonstrates how those voices constitute Qohelet's contradictory utterances and construct his unfinalizable identity.

Rural History of Soviet Central Asia: Land Reform and Agricultural Change in Early Soviet Uzbekistan /

: In the mid-1920s, Uzbekistan's countryside experienced a 'land reform', which aimed at solving rural poverty and satisfying radical fringes among peasants and Party, while sustaining agricultural output, especially for cotton. This book analyses the decision-making process underpinning the reform, its implementation, and economic and social effects. The reform must be understood against the background of the wreckage caused by war and revolution, and linked to subsequent policies of 'land organisation' and regime-sponsored 'class struggle'. Overall, this is the first comprehensive account of early Soviet policy in Central Asia's agricultural heartland, encompassing land rights, irrigation, credit, resettlement, and the co-operative system.

Christian Mission in Seventeenth-Century Taiwan : A Reception History of Texts, Beliefs, and Practices /

: This is the first book-length study of the reception of Christianity and the epistemic outcomes of contact between Protestant and Catholic missionaries and Indigenous Austronesians in the contact zone of seventeenth-century colonial Taiwan. In the Age of European Expansion, Dutch Reformed and Spanish Catholic missionaries attempted to win the souls of Indigenous Austronesian people in Taiwan. Christopher Joby answers the question of how the missionaries tried to overcome the gap between their own cultures and languages and those of the Indigenous Austronesians or Formosans to communicate their versions of the Christian Gospel in the contact zone of seventeenth-century Taiwan, and he analyses the consequences of these encounters. As such, this book is a reception history of the texts, beliefs, and practices that Reformed Protestant and Catholic missionaries introduced to convert the Formosans to their mode of Christianity. Using many linguistic and non-linguistic examples, this approach allows for a 'complementary colour perspective' by comparing the epistemic outcomes of the Dutch Reformed and Catholic missions.

Remembering National Socialism in Austrian Post-war Film (1945-1955) /

: Entrenched in the myth of being victim of the Nazi aggression, Austrian elites pursued a politics of memory that symbolically shook off any responsibility for the emergence, development and consequences of National Socialism. Authors of the vast majority of films produced early after 1945 were not interested in dealing with the recent Nazi past of their country. There were, however, exceptions. Through detailed analysis of the narratives, stylistic patterns and reception of films that were set during or immediately after World War II, this book explains how cinema corroborated Austrian national self-stereotypes, at the same time offering a critique of the Nazi regime.

: A sequel to the volume, Akbar and the Jesuits , translated into English by C.H. Payne, in 1930, it describes the encounters of Jesuit missionaries in the Mughal court under Emperor Jahangir (r.1605-1627). The book is divided into three parts, the first part being the main theme of the book, which talks about the Jesuit account of court activities and their religious mission. The second part contains the accounts, which include the Travels of Benedict Goës and the third part is about the Jesuit mission to Pegu and the deputation of Portuguese emissaries to Goa. These parts discusses the first decades of the seventeenth century concerning the political happenings in the Mughal court and the Portuguese missions to South East and East Asia. It also covers the conversion of two Mughal princes to Christianity, the Jesuit father's mission to the Agra court, inter-faith debates between the Jesuit fathers and Muslim clergies, the Mughal king's reverence to Jesus Christ, and the neo-converts to the Christian faith. The second part of this book talks about Benedict Goës trip from Lahore, which was another Mughal capital, to Yarkand, situated in the current Xinjiang autonomous province of China, and Suchou in mainland China. The third part talks about the establishment of Portuguese rule in Burma with the Portuguese occupation of Pegu, discussing the conflicts between the Portuguese and Arakanese rulers and the establishment of Portuguese adventurer and mercenary Filipe de Brito e Nicote at Syriam.

The Political Economy of South Africa's Post-apartheid Transition : The Rejection of Alternatives to Neoliberalism Critical Reconstructions of Political Economy, Volume 7 /

: South Africa's post-apartheid transition has proven disastrous. It is marked by the emergence of a black elite of enriched capitalists out of the globalisation, neoliberalisation and financialisation of the economy in general and of its Minerals-Energy and Financial Complex in particular. By contrast, inequalities, poverty and failing social provision have persisted. Recent attention has shifted to how this disastrous trajectory was initiated, some suggesting a lack of available alternative policy options at the time of transition. This is shown to be false with a full range of progressive alternatives being rejected with corresponding consequences, from "state capture" to electoral defeat.

Questioning the historicity of Jesus : why a philosophical analysis elucidates the historical discourse /

: This volume moves beyond the mainstream scholarly scepticism over the Christ of Faith and considers if there is sufficient evidence to establish the existence of the more mundane Historical Jesus. Using the logical tools of the analytic philosopher, Lataster finds that the relevant sources are unreliable as historical documents, and that the key method of those purporting that the Historical Jesus existed is to appeal to sources that do not exist. Considering an ancient hypothesis suggesting that Jesus began as a celestial messiah that certain Second Temple Jews already believed in, and was later allegorised in the Gospels, Lataster discovers that it is more reasonable to at least be agnostic over Jesus' historicity.

It traces its origins back to ancient legal systems and societal norms, elucidating the evolution of the legal framework alongside shifting attitudes and policy decisions. The chapters shed light on the socio-cultural forces that have contributed to the proliferation of criminal laws, resulting in a state of over criminalization in contemporary society, supported by empirical analysis. A Linguistic Approach to Revelation 19:11-20:6 and the Millennium Binding of Satan /

: Is the establishment of the millennium binding of Satan cohesively linked with Jesus's victorious battle in the Book of Revelation? This study is the first to answer this frequently debated question from a linguistic perspective.
This study argues that the establishment of the millennium binding of Satan and the vindication of the saints in Revelation 20:1-6 are cohesively linked with Jesus's victorious battle in Revelation 19:11-21. The major implication of this analysis views both these events as consequent effects of Christ's victory at the eschatological battle. Applying systemic functional linguistics and discourse analysis of cohesion, this study advances critical scholarship on the Book of Revelation by offering the first fully sustained answer to this frequently debated question regarding Satan's binding from a modern linguistic approach.
