Intertwined with the histories of Arab migration to the Americas from the nineteenth century until now, the emergence of competing nationalist narratives within Arab communities in Latin America, and the birth of anti-imperialist and anticolonial struggles, the history of cultural entanglements between the Arab world and Latin America spans over a hundred years--and reveals the vital role of art in creating bridges between the two regions. This book, the first of its kind, gathers interventions that showcase the twentieth century as a period of intense redefinitions and cultural effervescence across the whole of Latin America and the Arab world. Through the courtesy of the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, an Annual Meeting of the American Research Center in Egypt was held this year in Chicago on November 13th.
The meeting was well attended by members and their guests. Among the latter was Mr. Renzo Pagin of the Department of State of the United States of America, Miss Bea Davidson of the Smithsonian Institution, Professor Jaroslav Cerny, distinguished Professor of Egyptology Emeritus of Oxford University, Dr. Labib Habachi, a well-known scholar from Egypt, and Mrs. Habachi, who has for several years been associated with the office of the Center in Cairo. Much of the work of the Cairo office is not very spectacular and attracts little attention locally. A number of inquiries are received by mail every week which are answered more or less promptly, depending on their nature. Bequests for photographs and other information, especially bibliographical data, come in regularly, and to fulfill them as well as possible and as quickly as possible takes much time and often much energy. We try to keep in touch with the other Schools affiliated with the Archaeological Institute of. America as well as with museums and universities at home, and even some of our European colleagues have turned to us for help if their own channels of approach proved inadequate. There are a number of callers every few days who wish to inform themselves of items as varied as the address of a certain institution in the U.S. and the number of American expeditions which have worked in Egypt in the past. There were also several American archaeologists on visits from Athens and Jerusalem whom we took to some of the sites near Cairo, and there is the ever-present task of keeping abreast of what is going on in the field and of writing it up for the Newsletter. But it was the showing of Mr. Garner’s film EGYPT - A JOURNEY INTO THE PAST which brought the Center to the attention of a wider public here in Cairo, and in order to follow up this interest it has been decided to arrange a number of tours for interested members of the American colony and their friends.
Approaches to teaching the works of Naguib Mahfouz /

Naguib Mahfouz is the Arab world's best-known writer and the single most important chronicler and analyst of twentieth-century Egypt. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988, and since then his work has been increasingly studied in North American university classrooms. This first volume in the MLA series Approaches to Teaching World Literature to focus on an Arab author or Arabic literature provides an introduction to Mahfouz. In part 1, "Materials," the editors discuss Mahfouz's background, influence, and critical reception. In part 2, "Approaches," the volume's contributors offer information, resources, and insights for teaching his work. Topics covered include the Arabian Nights tradition in Mahfouz's work, the challenge of teaching Mahfouz in English translation, the Nasserite intellectual in The Beggar, the image of Alexandria in Miramar, the bitterness of British occupation in Midaq Alley, and the quest of Sufism in "Zaabalawi."
