From the Kur to the Aras : A Military History of Russia's Move into the South Caucasus and the First Russo-Iranian War, 1801-1813 /
:
In From the Kur to the Aras George A. Bournoutian presents the first military history of the Russian advance into the South Caucasus in 1801 and the ensuing First Russo-Iran War (1804-1813) that was a crucial step in the Russian Empire's eventual expansion into the Caucasus region. Using both Iranian and Russian primary sources, the work vividly describes the strategies, military capabilities and personalities that clashed for ten years, ending with the Treaty of Golestan. Numerous and illustrative maps, as well as informative appendices, add to a balanced view of a struggle between and ancient and an emerging empire.

:
Psalms or Psalter? This study creates a new, solid foundation for discussions on the psalm manuscripts found in the Judean Desert. A variety of explanatory models, statistics and synthetic hypotheses have already been produced in the course of numerous analyses and interpretations. However, the disparate and fragmentary character of the manuscripts has barely received any attention since the main focus has mostly been on discussions of the content. For the first time, the entire preserved fragment material of the psalm manuscripts from the Judean Desert is here being presented and edited as a whole. In this way, it can be defined and analyzed in future studies. New ways of exploring the contents will particularly result with regard to the best preserved psalm roll, 11QPs a.

:
Lucian's Alexander the False Prophet is the only literary testimony to a highly influential cult of the 'New Asclepios Glycon' which, as archaeological evidence continues to document, spread all over the eastern Mediterranean basin throughout the second and third centuries AD. This book offers an analysis of the complete manuscript tradition, a newly constituted text and a German translation. The extensive introduction deals with (1) the archaeological evidence, (2) the question of Lucian's historical reliability, (3) the reasons for Lucian's opposition to the oracle of Abonuteichos, (4) the institutions and the teaching of the cult at Abonuteichos. Furthermore, there is a commentary on all philological and historical questions and on those issues relevant to the history of religions. Lucian's Alexander is not one of his satirical bravuras, but a strikingly successful attempt at writing a work of contemporary history - a practical example of what the author himself has theoretically discussed in his work, How to Write History .

Tārīkh-i ʿālam ārā-yi amīnī : Sharḥ-i ḥukmrāni-yi salāṭīn-i Āq Qūyūnlū wa ẓuhūr-i Ṣafawiyān /
:
Born in Shiraz and a student of one of the founders of the Shiraz School in philosophy, Jalāl al-Dīn Dawānī (d. 908/1502-03), Faḍlallāh b. Rūzbihān Khunjī (d. 927/1521) was a scholar who wrote on a variety of subjects, with more than thirty titles to his name. In his younger years, Khunjī had travelled several times to Cairo and the Hejaz, studying the traditional Islamic sciences under a number of scholars there. The rest of his life he mostly spent in the eastern part of the Persianate world, moving from court to court as circumstances required. The work that is published here is historical, being a chronicle of the reign of the Aq Qoyunlu ruler Yaʿqūb b. Uzun Ḥasan (d. 896/1490) and the emergence of the Safavids, covering the years 882-96/1478-91. Based on a clear vision of historiography, this rare contemporary document, written from memory and oral sources, is largely a witness account of events.

Insofar as phenomenology continues to offer, by virtue of its self-understanding, the best technique provided for philosophical analysis of experience, phenomenology is obligated to respond to the category of mysticism. It is especially with Michel Henry and Meister Eckhart that we see phenomenology and mysticism coincide. They both put into play a radical reduction as a unity of reflection/praxis, which exposes to view how the self-appearance and the self-enactment of life come together in their respective self-affections or "trials of experience."

De tribus principiis, oder, Beschreibung der drey Principien göttliches Wesens : Of the three principles of divine being, 1619 /
:
Jacob Boehme's Of the Three Principles of Divine Being, 1619, is vital for understanding his work as a whole, its relationship to its epoch, and its role in intellectual history. Reproduced here using the methods of critical edition, the original of the work and its adjacent translation, together with an extensive introduction and commentary, provide unprecedented access to this essential work of early modern thought and cast a fresh light on the revolutionary theological, philosophical, and scientific developments coinciding with the start of the Thirty Years' War. The 1730 edition is annotated with reference to the manuscript sources to clarify ambiguities so that the translation can interpret the text without refracting its meaning. This makes it possible to interpret Boehme's complex theories of the origin of the divine being and of nature, the human creature, and the female aspect of divinity.
