A Companion to Josephus in the Medieval West /

: The works of Titus Flavius Josephus ben Matthias on biblical history and the Jewish war were read and studied throughout the Latin west during the Middle Ages. Each generation of Christian scholars had to contend with the Jewish writer's text, reputation, and content. This volume demonstrates the complex relationship between Josephus' legacy and his readers who sought to make use of that legacy across the period of 500 to 1300. Contributors include: Carson Bay, Susan Edgington, Anthony Ellis, Paul C. Hilliard, Karen M. Kletter, Justin Lake, Richard M. Pollard, Graeme Ward, and Julian Yolles.

'The House of the Priest' : A Palestinian Life (1885-1954) /

: ' The House of the Priest ' presents and discusses the hitherto unpublished and untranslated memoirs of Niqula Khoury, a senior member of the Orthodox Church and Arab nationalist in late Ottoman and British Mandate Palestine. It discusses the complicated relationships between language, religion, diplomacy and identity in the Middle East in the interwar period. This original annotated translation and accompanying articles provide a thorough explication of Khoury's memoirs and their significance for the social, political and religious histories of twentieth-century Palestine and Arab relations with the Greek Orthodox church. Khoury played a major role in these dynamics as a leading member of the fight for Arab presence in the Greek-dominated clergy, and for an independent Palestine, travelling in 1937 to Eastern Europe and the League of Nations on behalf of the national movement. Contributors: Sarah Irving, Charbel Nassif, Konstantinos Papastathis, Karène Sanchez Summerer, Cyrus Schayegh.

A Companion to Saxo Grammaticus /

: Ever since the publication of Saxo Grammaticus' Gesta Danorum at the beginning of the thirteenth century, scholars and laymen have grappled with the complex and marvellous chronicle. As much specialized scholarship has been published in Danish, this companion breaks new ground by giving a comprehensive and up-to-date tour of the work for a global audience. Attention is given to the unity of Saxo's massive chronicle, whether he is dealing with a legendary pagan past or events from his own time. Saxo's world and views are explored in ways that shed new light on all of northern Europe. Contributors are Bjørn Bandlien, Karsten Friis-Jensen, Michael H. Gelting, Thomas K. Heebøll-Holm, Lars Hermanson, Lars Kjær, Torben Kjersgaard Nielsen, Annette Lassen, Anders Leegaard Knudsen, Lars Boje Mortensen, Mia Münster-Swendsen, Erik Niblaeus, Roland Scheel, Karen Skovgaard-Petersen, Kurt Villads Jensen, and Helle Vogt.

Inscriptions in the private sphere in the Greco-Roman world /

: When one thinks of inscriptions produced under the Roman Empire, public inscribed monuments are likely to come to mind. Hundreds of thousands of such inscriptions are known from across the breadth of the Roman Empire, preserved because they were created of durable material or were reused in subsequent building. This volume looks at another aspect of epigraphic creation - from handwritten messages scratched on wall-plaster to domestic sculptures labeled with texts to displays of official patronage posted in homes: a range of inscriptions appear within the private sphere in the Greco-Roman world. Rarely scrutinized as a discrete epigraphic phenomenon, the incised texts studied in this volume reveal that writing in private spaces was very much a part of the epigraphic culture of the Roman Empire.

The reach of the Assyrian and Babylonian empires. Case studies in Eastern and Western peripheries

: This volume deals with the Assyrian and the Babylonian Empires and seeks to provide new data for the ways that enabled these states to govern efficaciously their vast territories and diverse populations across the ancient Middle East. With both states exerting and distributing power and authority from centre to periphery, the channels through which these were asserted are understood to be of key concern in order to assess the imperial structures. Elucidating the mechanisms of control, especially in view of the always fragile relations between the state centre and remote peripheries, has long been a major subject in the study on ancient empires.0The volume edited by Shuichi Hasegawa and Karen Radner is specifically concerned with tracing the Assyrian and Babylonian Empires? reach into and their hold over their more peripheral regions. The papers collected in this volume cover the period from the 9th to the 6th century BCE and draw on the rich archaeological and textual data that has come to light in old and new excavations and survey projects in Jordan, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Turkey, and in particular at the Dinka Settlement Complex (Gird-i Bazar and Qalat-i Dinka), the cemetery discovered at Sanandaj, Tel Rekhesh, Tell Ali al-Hajj, Tell Mastuma and Yasin Tepe.

I dekoriert wurde.

Global community : global security /

: Global security cannot be achieved until people view the world as a global community. Until such time, differences will continue to be perceived as threatening. These perceived "threats" are the primary threat to global security. This volume proposes methods for minimizing the "us versus them" mentality so that we can build a sense of global community.

Geschenke und Steuern, Zölle und Tribute : antike Abgabenformen in Anspruch und Wirklichkeit /

: This book examines modes of economic contribution in the ancient world through taxes, tribute, or so-called gifts. Specialists in the field of the ancient Near East, Egypt, classical Greece, Rome, and Israel, joined by an economic anthropologist, present a fresh evaluation of the textual and archaeological evidence. A prime question explored is the extent to which these disparate sources complement or contradict each other. State-imposed transactions were often recorded with an ideological bias, much dependent on whether the donors and recipients were viewed as in- or outsiders. The present interdisciplinary approach supplies the basis for the ancient economic terminology of contribution, taking into account the specific cultural context, the language of 'international' policy, and the correlation between modern and ancient termini.

Valuing the past in the Greco-Roman world : proceedings from the Penn-Leiden Colloquia on Ancient Values VII /

: The 'classical tradition' is no invention of modernity. Already in ancient Greece and Rome, the privileging of the ancient played a role in social and cultural discourses of every period. A collaboration between scholars in diverse areas of classical studies, this volume addresses literary and material evidence for ancient notions of valuing (or disvaluing) the deep past from approximately the fifth century BCE until the second century CE. It examines how specific communities used notions of antiquity to define themselves or others, which models from the past proved most desirable, what literary or exegetic modes they employed, and how temporal systems for ascribing value intersected with the organization of space, the production of narrative, or the application of aesthetic criteria.

The people of the Roman Empire encountered the emperor in many different ways, such as through statues in public places, his portrait on coins or his name in inscriptions. In these encounters, his subjects were not merely recipients of imperial self-expression, but also expressed their own ideas and expectations. Dialogangebote. Die Anrede des Kaisers jenseits der offiziellen Titulatur is the first study of this dynamic to make use of the rich Latin and Greek source material for the so-called unofficial titulature. These honorific epithets are analysed in their diachronic development from Augustus to Severus Alexander (27 BCE - 235 CE) and discussed in their thematic, media, functional and social contexts. The study fleshes out the important role played by the subjects in the representation of rulers and offers new insights into the importance of this phenomenon for the reciprocal communication between emperors and subjects.

Valentinianism : new studies /

: "Since Antiquity, the movement associated with Valentinus has been regarded as the most typical and the most representative exponent of "Gnosticism." Recent research has led to a new appraisal of Valentinianism as a distinct form of early Christianity that deserves to be understood in its own right. Valentinianism served as a catalyst for the development of mainstream Christian doctrine, exegesis and ritual. Its connections to contemporary forms of Platonism are being progressively uncovered. The present volume, edited by Christoph Markschies and Einar Thomassen, shows the current state of research on Valentinianism, offering contributions by leading experts about the history of the movement, contested aspects of Valentinian doctrine, and the use and interpretation of the New Testament by the Valentinians"--
