Naga ed-Dêr in the First Intermediate Period /

Beginning in 1901, George A. Reisner conducted a number of excavating campaigns in the neighbourhood of the modern village of Naga ed-Der in Upper Egypt, opposite the ancient city of Thinis, at first for the Hearst Expedition of the University of California (up to 1905) and thereafter for the Harvard University-Boston Museum of Fine Arts Expedition.0Naga ed-Der is important because of a series of ancient cemeteries extending in time from the Predynastic period to the Middle Kingdom. These cemeteries run for about six kilometres from Sheikh Farag on the north to Mesheikh on the south and form parts of a single large cemetery of the Thinite nome UE 8. In the course of the excavations at Naga ed-Der, Reisner discovered in addition extensive remains of the First Intermediate period-decorated tombs, steles, and inscribed coffins-belonging to the period extending from the end of the Sixth to the Eleventh Dynasties. The Predynastic, Early Dynastic, and Old Kingdom material from Naga ed-Der has been studied and published by Reisner and Arthur C. Mace and by Albert M. Lythgoe and Dows Dunham. Dows Dunham published seventy-five steles from Reisner's excavations in 1937.0This volume endeavours to date the material found by Reisner, including the inscribed stones published by Dunham, with a view to elucidating the history of the site in the period between the Old and Middle Kingdoms. Furthermore, a number of steles seen on the art market or in museums or private collections which, by their style, belong clearly to Naga ed-Der, have been added as supplementary material.

This collective volume presents the proceedings of an international symposium co-organized by Sorbonne university and Geneva university in Paris between February 12th and 15th 2015. The aim of the such a meeting was to establish a "state of the art" of the papyrological documentation known to us for this specific period of pharaonic history (letters, accounting documents, inventories, working teams' logbooks, personnel registers). By bringing together most specialists of this type of historic sources, it has enabled a complete presentation of the main series of documents from the Memphite area (papyri of Abusir and Sakkara), from Upper or Middle Egypt (Meir, Sharuna, Gebelein, Elephantine), or even from more remote places like the wadi el-Jarf harbour on the Red sea shores or Balat-Ayn Asil archives in the Dakhla oasis. Each contributor gives an overview of the available documentation and the most recent studies related to it. Numerous examples, some of them hitherto unpublished, are illustrated in this volume so as to better understand the way those lots are organized and to fully apprehend how the administration of this period was managed at the provincial as well as central level.

The study of historic foodways is as multifaceted and varied as food itself. The changes we see in food habits and choices over history reveal evolving social and political climates and help us envision our ancestors' everyday lives and imagined afterlives. Food certainly played a role in funerary rites; it was offered to the dead, of course, but also shared at the grave among the living family members, symbolically bridging between this world and the next. Choosing the food was embedded in a series of traditions and norms; how it relates to what was actually eaten in associated settlements enables an understanding of its meaning. Feasts, whether for the dead or the living, were laden with political and social meaning. Fasting, although requiring abstention from certain foods, also involves the management--from sourcing and storing to cooking and eating--of the permitted foods, a key concern in contexts such as monasteries where fasting occurred. This collective work demonstrates the diversity of possible approaches to food. It presents the current state of research on the foodways of Egypt and Sudan and highlights the importance of further interdisciplinary collaboration for a "big picture" approach. It brings together 16 articles covering archaeology (in the broadest sense), theory, anthropology, language, ethnography, and architecture to illustrate food traditions and history in Egypt and Sudan from as early as the 4th millennium BC to the 20th century.

Les changements que nous observons dans les habitudes et les choix alimentaires au fil du temps révèlent l'évolution des climats sociaux et politiques et nous aident à imaginer la vie quotidienne et l'au-delà de nos ancêtres. La nourriture jouait certainement un rôle dans les rites funéraires ; elle était offerte aux défunts, bien sûr, mais aussi partagée dans ou à proximité de la sépulture entre les membres vivants de la famille, jetant symboliquement un pont entre le monde d'ici-bas et l'au-delà. Le choix des aliments s'inscrivait dans une série de traditions et de normes ; la comparaison de ceux offerts avec ceux ordinairement consommés permet de comprendre la signification qui leur était attribuée. Les fêtes, qu'elles soient destinées aux morts ou aux vivants, étaient chargées d'une signification politique et sociale. Le jeûne, bien que consistant à s'abstenir de certains aliments, implique également la gestion - depuis l'approvisionnement et le stockage jusqu'à la cuisson et la consommation - des aliments autorisés, une préoccupation essentielle dans des contextes tels que les monastères, où le jeûne était pratiqué. Cet ouvrage collectif rend compte de la diversité des approches possibles portant sur l'alimentation. Il présente l'état actuel de la recherche sur les habitudes alimentaires de l'Égypte et du Soudan et souligne l'importance d'une collaboration interdisciplinaire plus poussée pour une approche globale. Il rassemble 16 articles couvrant l'archéologie (au sens large), la théorie, l'anthropologie, la langue, l'ethnographie et l'architecture, qui illustrent les traditions alimentaires et l'histoire de l'Égypte et du Soudan depuis le IVe millénaire av. J.-C. jusqu'au xxe siècle.

It is a consolidated tradition that the 'Proceedings of the International Congresses of Coptic Studies' include both papers organized thematically - according to sections and panels - and a larger group of general reportraits, provided with a rich bibliography, about new research trends and acquisitions in a particular field of Coptology: art, archaeology, literature, linguistics, monasticism, Gnosticism, magic, etc. 'The Proceedings of the Tenth International Congress of Coptic Studies', in particular, contain the reportraits delivered during the Cairo Congress of 2008 (covering the period 2002-2008) and those pronounced during the Rome Congress of 2012 (covering the period 2008-2014), the latter characterized by two new reportraits: "Shenutean studies" and "Ethiopic studies in relation to Egyptian culture". Moreover, it is worth mentioning that for the first time some papers are organized in panels dedicated to very specific topics, in which current research is particularly alive, such as "Bawit: a monastic community, its structure and texts", "Thebes in Late Antiquity", or "The reconstruction and edition of Coptic Biblical Manuscripts". Michael Fishbane is Nathan Cummings Distinguished Service Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of Chicago Divinity School. Trained in biblical studies and the ancient Near East at Brandeis University, he has written on rabbinic interpretation, medieval Jewish philosophy and mysticism, Hasidism, modern Jewish philosophy, and Hebrew poetry. His earlier groundbreaking historical work has provided the foundation for his more recent constructive hermeneutic theology. Among his numerous books are the award-winning Biblical Interpretation in Ancient Israel (1985) and Kiss of God (1994), Biblical Myth and Rabbinic Mythmaking (2003), and Sacred Attunement: A Jewish Theology (2008). He is, in addition, an elected member of the American Academy of Jewish Research and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

This volume contains word-for-word commentaries on Pindar's Olympian Odes 3, 7, 12, 14. Emphasis is placed on the explanations of peculiarities of grammar and idiom, but due attention is paid to figures of style and problems of poetic structure. The interpretations proposed by the author - many of them which are new - are documented as fully, but at the same time as concisely, as possible. This documentation, which includes a critical examination of other views, has been made more easily accessible by detailed indexes. The poems discussed do not have special similarities or interrelationships. On the other hand, they may be considered representative of the poet's art. From this point of view, the present selection may serve as an introduction to the study of Pindar's work. Vol. II will contain commentaries on Olympians 1, 10, 11, Nemean 11, and Isthmian 2. A third volume on Pythians 1, 8, 10 is inteded to conclude the series.

"La peinture de l'Égypte ancienne est essentiellement une peinture murale funéraire. C'est à Thèbes, l'actuelle Louqsor, qu'elle connut son plus grand développement, vers 1539-1077 av. J.-C. (Nouvel Empire) et c'est uniquement de cette peinture-là, plus exactement celle qui orne les tombeaux de particuliers, non les hypogées de la Vallée des Rois et de la Vallée des Reines, qu'il est question ici. L'objectif principal de Nadine Cherpion est l'étude du style dans les tombes thébaines. Par style, on entend aussi bien la dominante de couleurs d'un monument que la courbure d'une perruque ou la longueur d'une chute de reins. C'est ce qui fait 'l'esprit' d'une époque, voire d'un règne. Les études sur le style dans la peinture égyptienne sont peu nombreuses et souvent épuisées ou partielles (Wegner 1933, Mekhitarian 1954, Hofmann 2004). D'autre part, un sujet aussi subtil que le style peut sans difficulté être repris à intervalles réguliers avec un regard neuf. Quittant volontiers les frontières de l'égyptologie, l'auteur replace la peinture thébaine dans le cadre de l'histoire universelle de la peinture, ce qui constitue l'un des aspects novateurs de son propos, tout comme la remise à plat de la datation. Bien plus qu'une compilation, ce livre est un travail de synthèse original, réalisé en grande partie sur le terrain. Il est illustré de nombreuses photographies prises, pour la plupart, par J.-Fr.
