Repetition and Variation in Literature and Music /

: The creation of meaningful and beautiful similarities as part of a pattern or structure is among the most important means humankind has developed in order to create, or respond to, order in various contexts and for various purposes. In the arts, similarity is among the most general aesthetic features which have informed all levels of works of art across cultures and times. It may range from all but zero difference between individual occurrences of a phenomenon ('repetition') to recognizable 'variations' of the same. The present volume focusses on the manifold forms and functions which repetition and variation can have in both literature and music.

Calendrical variations in Second Temple Judaism : new perspectives on the "Date of the Last Supper" debate /

: Starting from the seminal work of the French scholar Annie Jaubert on the date of the Last Supper, the present work revisits known - and identifies new - calendrical issues in the literature of Second Temple Judaism. The research supports the conclusion that all known calendrical traditions functioned on the tenet that orthopraxis in ancient Judaism meant close interconnection between cultic and agricultural cycles. From this perspective the book removes the calendrical objection leveled at the Jaubertian theory. Further, the research brings new light on current debates about Qumran calendrical documents and proposes the identification of a previously unknown calendrical polemic in the Astronomical Book of Enoch concerning the synchronization of the 364DY tradition with the lunar cycle.

Register Variation in the New Testament Petrine Texts /

: This book examines the nature of the early church from a Petrine perspective, employing an analysis of register to implement a more synthetic study of relevant texts in the New Testament. Liu utilises a type of discourse analysis that provides a framework for classifying grammatical and lexical information so that the reader can better understand the social function of not only Peter's speeches in Acts, but also the two epistles attributed to him. Liu's original and detailed study looks at the content and structure of the texts to enhance our understanding of the early church, with particular attention paid to the dichotomy between Petrine and Pauline Christianity and their competing pictures of Christian origins. This book will interest all scholars and students who wish to extend their understanding of both the historical and literary Peter.

"Speaking the Words": Linguistic Variation in the Pyramid Texts /

: This book investigates the linguistic diversity of the ancient Egyptian Pyramid Texts and what this diversity can reveal about the origins of the corpus and, more broadly, ancient Egypt in the Old Kingdom. It argues that the inclusion of linguistically diverse ritual utterances in the royal corpus of the Pyramid Texts was an intentional and active program by the royal court to incorporate ritual practices from the entire spectrum of Egyptian geography and society into the mortuary texts used by the king. The inclusion of ritual utterances representing all of Egypt thereby legitimized and monumentalized the authority of the king as the ruler of the totality of Egypt. In the book, the author describes the different categories of linguistic variation that exist in the Pyramid Texts. For each variant, there is a discussion of geographical, social, or chronological markers in the ritual utterances themselves that give clues as to where, when, or by whom that particular language variety would have been used. The author also draws on comparisons with Old Kingdom texts outside of the Pyramid Texts in order to map the distribution of the discussed linguistic variants throughout Egypt in order to produce a dialectical sketch of Old Kingdom Egypt. Additionally, this book situates the collection of the Pyramid Texts corpus into the historical context of the end of the Old Kingdom.

Beyond the Code : Muslim Family Law and the Shari'a Judiciary in the Palestinian West Bank /

: Legal issues of personal status - including those implicating women's rights - continue to be a focal area of shari'a judicial practice in the Muslim world. Changing ideas of marriage, relations between the spouses, divorce, and the rights of divorcees and widows challenge the courts around the Arab world. In this context, the areas that came under the Palestinian Authority in 1994 command particular attention: the particular political and socio-economic circumstances that surround Palestine's progress toward full statehood have created a remarkable crucible for the synthesis of a new family law in the Arab world. This rigorous study of the interpretation and application of personal status law in the Palestinian West Bank (and to a lesser extent in the Gaza Strip) is the most extensive yet attempted. It presents a systematic analysis of the application of Islamic family law in nearly 10,000 marriage contracts, 1000 deeds of talaq (unilateral divorce) or khul' (divorce with renunciation), and 2000 judicial rulings over a time span that includes Jordanian rule and Israeli military occupation, updating this with material from the beginning of the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority. Taken into account are the sources of law used in the shari'a courts of the West Bank: the successive codes of family law (the Jordanian Law of Personal Status 1976 and its predecessor the Jordanian Law of Family Rights 1951), and traditional Hanafi rules and texts, along with commentaries by prominent contemporary shari'a scholars and Appeal Court decisions - as well as the amendments and modifications being sought by civil society actors (notably women's groups) in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, as well as in Jordan.

Variation and change in Ancient Greek tense, aspect and modality /

: In this collective volume edited by Klaas Bentein, Mark Janse, and Jorie Soltic, some of the leading experts in the field explore variation and change in one of the core areas of Ancient Greek grammar: tense, aspect, and modality. The contributors investigate key aspects such as the existence of and competition between linguistic variants, the value of modern linguistic theory for the study of linguistic variation, and the interplay between various dimensions of variation. They focus on various stages of the Greek language (Archaic, Classical, Post-classical, and Byzantine), taking both qualitative and quantitative approaches. By doing so, they offer valuable insights in the multi-faced nature of the Greek verbal system, providing an incentive towards the further study of linguistic variation and change.

Redefining the Standards in Attic, Koine, and Atticism /

: Scholarship surrounding the standard varieties of Ancient Greek (Attic, the Koine, and Atticistic Greek) focused from its beginnings until relatively recently on determining fixed uniformities or differences between them. This collection of essays advocates for understanding them as interconnected and continuously evolving and suggests viewing them as living organisms shaped by their speakers and texts. The authors propose approaches that integrate linguistics, sociolinguistics, and literary studies to explore how speakers navigate linguistic norms and social dynamics, leading to innovations and reshaping of standards. Each contribution challenges the dichotomy between standards and deviations, suggesting that studying linguistic diversity through socio-literary interconnectedness can enrich our understanding of language history and cultural wealth.
