Charles Thomas (1928-2016) was a Cornishman and archaeologist, whose career from the 1950s spanned nearly seven decades. This period saw major developments that underpin the structures of archaeology in Britain today, in many of which he played a pivotal part. He campaigned for the Chair of Cornish Studies at the University of Exeter, which he then held from 1972 until retirement, after teaching archaeology at Edinburgh and Leicester Universities. The 'Intellectual Adventure in Archaeology' was to Charles the mental stimulation of developing narratives for the past, especially in the areas in which he was a leading authority, including the early church in Britain, the early medieval period more generally, and Cornish studies. The contributions to this volume demonstrate the extent to which his scholarship and character has underpinned the work of others, in Cornwall and beyond.

This volume brings together the leading experts in the history of European Oriental Studies. Their essays present a comprehensive history of the teaching and learning of Arabic in early modern Europe, covering a wide geographical area from southern to northern Europe and discussing the many ways and purposes for which the Arabic language was taught and studied by scholars, theologians, merchants, diplomats and prisoners. Authorship and Greek Song is a collection of papers dealing with various aspects of authorship in the song culture of Ancient Greece. In this cultural context the idea of the poet as author of his poems is complicated by the fact that poetry in archaic Greece circulated as songs performed for a variety of audiences, both local and "global" (Panhellenic). The volume's chapters discuss questions about the importance of the singers/performers; the nature of the performance occasion; the status of the poet; the authority of the poet/author and/or that of the performer; and the issues of authenticity arising when poems are composed under a given poet's name. The volume offers discussions of major authors such as Pindar, Sappho, and Theognis.

Professor Simpson will be joined there by (among others) Edward L. B. Terrace, of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, a member of the Center, and Nicholas B. Millet, the present Director of the Center in Cairo. Dr. George T. Scanlon will represent the Center in Cairo during Mr. Millet *s absence.

The first week after arrival at Abu Simbel was occupied by the work of organization and the photogrammetric survey. The latter was undertaken by a team of three French scholars, assisted by Drs. Mahmoud Tolba and Hasan Mostafa of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Cairo. In charge was Professor Poiuilliers, Directeur de 1'Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, a pioneer in all the applications of aerial survey. He served as chief of aerial observation for the AEF in 1916-1918. The first to apply the principles of aerial mapping to the study of architecture, it was his survey which was the basis of the photogrammetric section of the Report on the Monuments of Nubia (unfortunately without the mention of his name). By combining surveying and stereo (3-D) photography, he has been able to make very accurate measurements of buildings in the least possible time. From the results of the work'at Abu Simbel a model of the temple and an architectural study are now being prepared in Paris.

In Monotheism and Christology in Greco-Roman Antiquity , Matthew V. Novenson brings together thirteen state-of-the-art essays by leading scholars on the various ways ancient Jewish, Christian, and classical writers conceive of God, Christ, Wisdom, the demiurge, angels, foreign gods, and other divine beings. In particular, the book revisits the "early high Christology" debates of the 1990s, identifying the lasting contributions thereof as well as the lingering difficulties and new, emerging questions from the last thirty years of research. The essays in this book probe the much-touted but under-theorized distinctions between monotheism and polytheism, Judaism and Hellenism, Christianity and paganism. They show how what we call monotheism and Christology fit within the Greco-Roman world of which they are part.

Shunet el-Zebib Documentation and Conservation
:
The funerary monument of King Khasekhemwy in Abydos is also known as the Shunet el-Zebib. Little is known about King Khasekhemwy, the last king of the Second Dynasty, but his reign ended in 2686 BC, making Shunet el-Zebib among the oldest surviving mud-brick structures in the world and the best example of Egypt’s earliest tradition of royal mortuary building. Funding from the Egyptian Antiquities Project (EAP) between 1999 and 2006 resulted in documentation and conservation of approximately 50% of the 200-meter perimeter using newly made mud bricks of the same size and originally sourced materials to re-establish structural integrity.
Follow-up funding provided under a subsequent USAID grant in 2010 enabled team members to continue with the stabilization and conservation of the enclosure, parts of which still risked collapse. The precarious situation at the Shunet el-Zebib was evidenced by its inclusion in the World Monuments Fund’s 2008 Watch List of the World’s 100 Most Endangered Sites.

This volume of the book series Königtum, Staat und Gesellschaft früher Hochkulturen contains the proceedings of the eleventh international conference dedicated to the ancient Egyptian temple in all its aspects, which was hosted by the Czech Institute of Egyptology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague in May 2017. The main theme of the meeting, the "Discourse between Tomb and Temple" revolved around the many diverse types of interaction that existed between two crucial and tangible expressions of ancient Egyptian thought, belief and culture. Ranging from the Old Kingdom to the era of Roman presence, the fourteen papers in this volume present, analyse and interpret evidence expressed in art, architecture, language, ritual, funerary and other practices, with a spotlight on relations, connections and exchanges between temple and tomb and its development and changing nature over time. This includes topics related to the transmission and exchange of specific textual corpora in addition to individual texts, decorative patterns or architectural elements as well as the interchangeability of rituals. Overall, the papers indicate incontestable distinctions between tomb and temple as well as substantial commonalities. These various forms of exchanges and interactions are moreover not static, but appear to develop and intensify over time, especially from the era of the New Kingdom onward.
