Translators' Formative Agency in the Periodical Hawar (1932-1943) : The Making of a Kurdish Cultural Identity /

The present work uncovers the pivotal role translations in the periodical Hawar played in the formation of a Kurdish cultural identity. In this light, it foregrounds translators' agency and their contributions in novel contexts and thus fills a crucial gap in this area.This work provides new insights into identity formation, focusing on translations in a key magazine published in a minoritized language in the 1930s and 1940s. In this context, it particularly underscores the agency of Celadet Alî Bedirxan as the leading translator and writer as well as the founder and chief editor of the magazine. His vision of Kurdish cultural identity in Hawar had a multilayered characteristic: It was oriented toward a dialogic relationship between Kurdish and western cultures. It proposed the Roman script for Kurdish language dialects and introduced a simple prose style. It also embraced a plural Kurdish religious aspect and led the way to the development of modern Kurdish literature.

From Qumran to the Yaḥad : a new paradigm of textual development for The community rule /

Since the discovery of the Cave 4 versions of The Community Rule (Serekh ha-Yaḥad or S), scholars have been perplexed about its complex textual history. This important charter material for the Dead Sea Scrolls' authors appears in alternate versions-ones with contradictory legal prescriptions and opposing self-references-but exhibits no clear order of chronological development. Benefitting from the entire Qumran library now available to us, this book offers a new, broader model for reading S that better accounts for the long and diverse history behind the text. The resulting paradigm challenges the Qumrancentric lens through which many read the "sectarian texts" and offers a fresh way of thinking about sectarian community formation among the authors of the Scrolls.

The first codification of Polish court proceedings was made in 1523. Until recently, the Sahidic Old Testament has received little attention. In Sahidic Coptic Leviticus , Antonia St Demiana fully documents, for the first time, the manuscript evidence of Sahidic Coptic Leviticus and offers a full codicological investigation and reconstruction of its codices and fragments. By surveying the dispersed Sahidic Leviticus fragments and folios, codices formerly considered to be independent of one another are reconstructed and unified, and new Leviticus fragments are identified and virtually assigned to their original codices. A semi-diplomatic edition of the most complete witness of Sahidic Leviticus, MLM M566, with the variae lectiones from the other Sahidic Leviticus witnesses is provided with a critical apparatus and English translation. A commentary including an introductory textual study and translation analysis of the text is also presented. In addition, this volume offers new and conclusive observations on the nature of the Sahidic version of Leviticus, and the relationship between the text of Sahidic Leviticus and its Greek Vorlage .

The book addresses the connections between the Humayni poetry of Yemen and the sacred poetry of Jews from Yemen, a hitherto-neglected chapter in the history of Arabic and Jewish literatures. The book culminates with a discussion of ways in which poets and critics in modern-day Yemen and in Israel transformed this poetry.

Online Apologies in Japanese provides a comprehensive account of how three Japanese expressions commonly considered apologetic ( gomen, su(m)imasen and mōshiwake arimasen ) work in a data set collected from the Q&A website Yahoo! Chiebukuro. The focus is on three variables: their pragmatic functions, the discursive strategies they co-occur with, and the events and behaviours that warrant them. Theoretically, this book introduces a combination of established and emerging approaches in the field of pragmatics. Methodologically, it brings together corpus linguistics and discourse analysis for the study of Japanese.
