In Theological Hermeneutics in the Classical Pentecostal Tradition: A Typological Account , L. William Oliverio Jr. accounts for the development of Classical Pentecostal theology, as theological hermeneutics, through four types: the original Classical Pentecostal hermeneutic, the Evangelical-Pentecostal hermeneutic, the contextual-Pentecostal hermeneutic, and the ecumenical-Pentecostal hermeneutic. Oliverio gives special attention to key figures in shaping Pentecostal theology and the underlying philosophical assumptions which informed their theological interpretations of reality. The text concludes with a philosophical basis for future Pentecostal theological hermeneutics within the contours of a hermeneutical realism that affirms both the hermeneutical nature of all theology and the implicit affirmation of realism within theological accounts.

Les traditions littéraires sur la dormition et l'assomption représentent une pièce majeure du dossier. Mais elles ne peuvent être situées et classées que si l'on considère également les traditions topologiques s'y rapportant. Le présent volume, qui complète celui publié en 1995 ( Dormition et Assomption de Marie. Histoire des traditions anciennes ), présente de manière définitive une recherche commencée en 1986. Dans ce recueil, un certain nombre de contributions, treize, parues à part du premier volume, entre 1992 et 2007, ont été regroupées. Ces différents travaux, corrigés et complétés, fournissent des apports fondamentaux, d'ordre littéraire comme d'ordre doctrinal : en particulier ceux relatifs à l'histoire de la recherche dans ce domaine, aux Vies de la Vierge et aux Apocalypses de la Vierge . The ancient traditions before the VIIIth century concerning the final fate of Mary constitute a large and very complex group. The literary traditions on the dormition and the assumption represent the major part of this dossier. We can only situate and classify them if we also study their topological traditions. The present volume completes the volume published in 1995 ( Dormition et Assomption de Marie. Histoire des traditions anciennes ). It is the final result of a research started in 1986. In the current compilation we regroup thirteen contributions published between 1992 and 2007. These different articles, rectified and completed, present a fundamental contribution, literary and doctrinal: particularly those on the history of the research, the Lives of the Virgin and the Apocalypses of the Virgin.

This book offers fresh readings of the Gospel of Philip (NHC II.3) and the Exegesis on the Soul (NHC II.6) from new theoretical and historical perspectives. Eschewing the category of "Gnosticism" and challenging common categorisations, the book analyses the preserved Coptic texts as coherent Christian compositions contemporary with the production and use of the Nag Hammadi Codices. A methodological framework based on Cognitive Poetics is outlined and applied to illuminate how the texts present a soteriology of transformation through religious rituals and practices using complex conceptual and intertextual blends with important polemical and paraenetic functions. The analysis highlights the use of metaphors and allusions in (re-)interpretations of authoritative Scripture, ritual and dogma. Complete Coptic texts and translations are included.

The new Isaac : tradition and intertextuality in the Gospel of Matthew /

Gospel scholarship has long recognized that Matthean Christology is a rich, multifaceted tapestry weaving multifold Old Testment figures together in the person of Jesus. It is somewhat strange, therefore, that scholarship has found little role for the figure of Isaac in the Gospel of Matthew. Employing Umberto Eco's theory of the Model Reader as a theoretical basis to ground the phenomenon of Matthean intertextuality, this work contends that when read rightly as a coherent narrative in its first-century setting, with proper attention to both biblical texts and extrabiblical traditions about Isaac, the Gospel of Matthew evinces a significant Isaac typology in service of presenting Jesus as new temple and decisive sacrifice.

A classicist, philosopher, and poet, Poul Martin Møller was an important figure in the Danish Golden Age. The traumatic event of the death of his wife led him to think more profoundly about the question of the immortality of the soul. In 1837 he published his most important philosophical treatise, "Thoughts on the Possibility of Proofs of Human Immortality," presented here in English for the first time. It was read and commented upon by the leading figures of the Golden Age, such as Søren Kierkegaard. It proved to be the last important work that Møller wrote before his death in March of 1838 at the age of 43.

The ideal of the self-governing church : a study in Victorian missionary strategy /

It is part of current missiological orthodoxy that newly created churches should obtain independence from cross-cultural missionaries as soon as possible. It is not often realised that much Victorian missionary thinking shared that objective. This important new work examines the ideal of the self-governing church in the Victorian period through a study of the official mind of the Church Missionary Society. The study begins with an examination of Henry Venn's, the famous CMS Secretary, commitment to self-supporting, self-propagating and self-governing churches. Was he a lonely figure battling against the accepted wisdom of the mid-Victorian period? The author argues that he was not, and was, if anything a slightly conservative spokesman for much current wisdom. Far from his views being abandoned at his death, they were the accepted orthodoxy within CMS until the end of the century. Although they came under increasing attack in the nineties, it was not until the beginning of the twentieth century, particularly under the influence of Eugune Stock, that they were finally abandoned. The importance of this study lies not only in its ability to explain Victorian missionary development, but also because it takes on board the age-old issue of how quickly should a church become self-governing.

The past is prologue : the revolution of Nicene historiography /

While there has been substantial scholarly work done on the development of Christian doctrine in the fourth and fifth centuries, very little corresponding attention has been paid to the writing of church history during this critical period. This work examines how authors began to construct the historical narrative of the "Arian" controversy and focuses on the interplay between theology and worshipping communities. Major figures such as Eusebius and Athanasius are examined, and important but overlooked figures such as an anonymous non-Nicene chronicler and Philostorgius are also included. In the introduction the book surveys recent developments in the study of "Arianism" and discusses the usefulness of the very category of an "Arian controversy." Subsequent chapters set forth the thesis that church histories are important sources for understanding the development of doctrine. A chapter is devoted to Eusebius' Ecclesiastical History, especially the oft-overlooked Book X. Further chapters explore the role of Rufinus as the first extant author to write a continuation of Eusebius. The work also consciously includes marginalized non-Nicene sources, and there are chapters which examine an anonymous non-Nicene chronicler and the Ecclesiastical History of the Eunomian Philostorgius of Borissus. The book is particularly useful for persons interested in examining the development of doctrine in the fourth century from fresh perspectives. The work approaches church histories as narrative myths of community origins produced by worshipping communities standing in continuity to local schools of thought.

In From Onomatodoxy to Aesthetics: Aleksei Losev's Concept of Symbol , Teresa Obolevitch analyzes the category of symbol in broad historical and philosophical context, with a focus on Losev's exploration of symbol over his prolific and tragic career. A survivor of the Stalinist camps, Losev is recognized as the "last classic" of Russian Silver Age philosophy. This book addresses Losev's critical role within the divisive debate over onomatodoxy (imiaslavie), or the divine name, which occupied the minds of Russian thinkers in the early nineteenth century. Obolevitch presents the ancient and patristic roots of onomatodoxy and elucidates its importance for Losev's work in a range of fields, including aesthetics, mathematics, philosophy of language, and religion. When juxtaposed with the practice of aggressive action and the brutal reality of war, Russian ideas appear completely incomprehensible. For more than three hundred years, Russians have cultivated the myth of the community, brotherhood of blood, and the indissoluble bond of the brotherly East Slavic peoples, while only recently they have unleashed a bloody war against the Ukrainians, killing children and defenceless civilians, burning and destroying everything along the way, and threatening the "mother of all Ruthenian cities" - Kyiv. The Russian invasion is difficult to explain using the concepts of realism or political pragmatism. They are also completely useless for understanding the mentality of Russians. To this day, the majority of Russians do not accept the existence of separate Ukrainian and Belarusian identities, considering Ukrainians and Belarusians as subgroups of the Russian nation, and the Belarusian and Ukrainian languages as dialects of Russian. They tacitly accept the Kremlin's arguments about the need to defend the Russian-speaking inhabitants of Ukrainian lands against the "fascist coup of the Banderites" and to bring about the "denazification" of Ukraine. The aim of the present work is to analyse the causes of this state of affairs from a linguocultural perspective.

This is the second volume in a three-volume work dedicated to exploring the influence of G.W.F. Hegel's philosophical thinking in Golden Age Denmark. The work demonstrates that the largely overlooked tradition of Danish Hegelianism played a profound and indeed constitutive role in many spheres of the Golden Age culture. This second tome treats the most intensive period in the history of the Danish Hegel reception, namely, the years from 1837 to 1841. The main figure in this period is the theologian Hans Martensen who made Hegel's philosophy a sensation among the students at the University of Copenhagen in the late 1830s. This period also includes the publication of Johan Ludvig Heiberg's Hegelian journal, Perseus , and Frederik Christian Sibbern's monumental review of it, which represented the most extensive treatment of Hegel's philosophy in the Danish language at the time. During this period Hegel's philosophy flourished in unlikely genres such as drama and lyric poetry. During these years Hegelianism enjoyed an unprecedented success in Denmark until it gradually began to be perceived as a dangerous trend.

This book, a history of a religious category of ancient philosophy, is the first synthesis on the notion of daimōn in the Platonic tradition. Platonic demonology is a body of doctrine that constantly reorganized and redefined itself, from the Old Academy to the last Neoplatonists, by reinterpreting Plato's texts concerning demons. The present work illuminates the modus operandi of this exegesis by analysing the relationship between demonology and, respectively, cosmology, the philosophical hermeneutics of religion, and theories of the soul. This study aims to provide a better understanding of the attempts to rationalize and to define the religious phenomenon in Late Antiquity. Histoire d'une catégorie religieuse de la philosophie ancienne, ce livre représente la première synthèse sur la notion de daimōn dans la tradition platonicienne. La démonologie platonicienne constitue un corps doctrinal qui se réorganise et se redéfinit constamment, de l'Ancienne Académie aux derniers néoplatoniciens, par la réinterprétation des textes de Platon relatifs aux démons. L'objectif du présent travail est d'éclairer le modus operandi de cette exégèse à partir de l'analyse des relations de la démonologie avec la cosmologie, avec l'herméneutique philosophique de la religion et avec les théories de l'âme. Cette étude est susceptible de servir à une meilleure compréhension des tentatives de rationalisation et de définition du phénomène religieux dans l'Antiquité tardive.
