Islamic piety in medieval Syria : mosques, cemeteries and sermons under the Zangids and Ayyūbids (1146-1260) /

: A study of religious thought and practice across a broad social spectrum, but within a well-defined historical context, this book is an interdisciplinary endeavor that incorporates the tools of philology, social-history and historical-anthropology. Focusing on the mosques, public assemblies, cemeteries and shrines of Syrian Muslims in the period of the crusades and the anti-Frankish jihad, the book describes and deciphers religious rites and experiences, liturgical calendars, spiritual leadership, and perceptions of impiety and dissent. Working from a perspective that breaks down the dichotomization of religion into 'official' and 'popular,' it exposes the negotiation, construction and dissemination of hybrid forms of religious life. The result is an intimate and complex presentation of the texture of medieval Islamic piety.

Frater Petrus Collationes de tempore (Fourteenth Century) : Volume 2: Collations 64-150, First Sunday after Easter through Ordinary Time /

: The Latin sermons published for the first time are attributed to an otherwise unknown Franciscan friar referred to as Frater Petrus. This second volume of his Collationes de tempore, covering the First Sunday after Easter through Ordinary Time, comprises all the remaining entries for Sundays and major feasts in a full year's cycle. The sermons in volume two are preserved in a single fourteenth-century manuscript from Germany. Theologically competent and gracefully presented in the conventional sermon style of the period, the collection served religious communities and provided material for preaching in the vernacular for the general public. The themes as developed offer evidence of actual preaching in a typical setting from the period between the founding of the Franciscan order and the Observant reform movement. These sermons were not composed by a major light of the order, but by a rank-and-file friar who may have held the status of an intermediate-level teacher, judging by the care with which the collection was copied and indexed. Edited and translated by Daniel Nodes, the Collationes de tempore of Frater Petrus offers scholars and students a reliable new resource in an area of sermon studies still in short supply.

The Unity of Mystical Traditions, The Transformation of Consciousness in Tibetan and German Mysticism.

: This book argues that mystical doctrines and practices initiate parallel transformative processes in the consciousness of mystics. This thesis is supported through a comparative analysis of Tibetan Buddhist Dzogchen (rdzogs-chen) and the medieval German mysticism of Eckhart, Suso, and Tauler. These traditions are interpreted using a system/cybernetic model of consciousness. This model provides a theoretical framework for assessing the cognitive effects of mystical doctrines and practices and showing how different doctrines and practices may nevertheless initiate common transformative processes. This systems approach contributes to current philosophical discourse on mysticism by (1) making possible a precise analysis of the cognitive effects of mystical doctrines and practices, and (2) reconciling mystical heterogeneity with the essential unity of mystical traditions.

Brill's companion to German romantic philosophy

: Early German Romanticism has long been acknowledged as a major literary movement, but only recently have scholars appreciated its philosophical significance as well. This collection of original essays showcases not only the philosophical achievements of early German Romantic writers such as Friedrich Schlegel and Novalis, but also the sophistication, contemporary relevance, and wide-ranging influence of their philosophical contributions. This volume will be of interest both to students looking for an introduction to romanticism as well as to scholars seeking to discover new facets of the movement - a romantic perspective on topics ranging from mathematics to mythology, from nature to literature and language. This volume bears testimony to the enduring and persistent modernity of early German Romantic philosophy.

Philosophy in the Islamic World : Volume 4/1: 19th-20th Centuries: The Arabic-Speaking Region /

: Philosophy in the Islamic World is a comprehensive and unprecedented four-volume reference work devoted to the history of philosophy in the realms of Islam, from its beginnings in the eighth century AD down to modern times. The focus of this fourth installment of the series, divided into two volumes, is the 19th and 20th centuries and geographically on the Arab countries, the Ottoman-Turkish region, Iran, and Muslim South Asia. During this time philosophy was pursued at Islamic institutions and increasingly in Western-style universities, but philosophy also had an impact beyond academia. In each chapter, an international expert on philosophy in this period explores the teachings of individual philosophers, philosophical movements (philosophy of religion, logical empiricism, deconstructionism, etc.), and schools (for instance the continuation of Mullā Ṣadrā's philosophy of being). Debates over cultural authenticity, political rule, gender, and other major issues are also presented. This is the English version of the relevant volume of the Ueberweg, the most authoritative German reference work on the history of philosophy, which updates the German version ( Philosophie in der Islamischen Welt Band 4/1: 19. und 20. Jahrhundert. Arabischer Sprachraum , Basel: Schwabe, 2021) by providing references to the latest scholarly literature. The Visionary Preaching of Juana de la Cruz (1481-1534) : Ritual, Revelation, and Collective Writing /

: Step into the world of 16th-century Castile, where a devout community of Franciscan women preserved the public preaching of their visionary abbess, Juana de la Cruz (1481-1534), through writing. This groundbreaking book uncovers how her sermons were recorded, explores the materiality of the surviving codices, and reveals their role in the controversial censorship and blocking of Juana's canonization. Tracing the rich tradition of the liturgical vision (12th-16th centuries), it delves into female literacy and the creation of collective knowledge in female religious houses around Europe. Featuring rare insights and fresh evaluations of historical texts, this volume illuminates the intersection of female prophetic preaching, community, and the written word at the end of the Middle Ages.

Arabic oration : art and function /

: In Arabic Oration: Art and Function , a narrative richly infused with illustrative texts and original translations, Tahera Qutbuddin presents a comprehensive theory of this preeminent genre in its foundational oral period, 7th-8th centuries AD. With speeches and sermons attributed to the Prophet Muḥammad, ʿAlī, other political and military leaders, and a number of prominent women, she assesses types of orations and themes, preservation and provenance, structure and style, orator-audience authority dynamics, and, with the shift from an oral to a highly literate culture, oration's influence on the medieval chancery epistle. Probing the genre's echoes in the contemporary Muslim world, she offers sensitive tools with which to decode speeches by mosque-imams and political leaders today.

Humans and Other Animals in the Middle Ages : An Introduction and Reader /

: This sourcebook serves both as an introduction and a wide-ranging reference work for human attitudes to nonhuman animals in Latin Europe during the Middle Ages. Under twelve headings, it includes numerous translated passages from Latin and vernacular texts that reflect human conceptions and uses of other animals during the period 300-1520. Theologians, philosophers, encyclopaedists, bestiarists, hagiographers, chroniclers, huntsmen and writers of agricultural manuals, cookbooks and plague treatises all had something to say about the place of nonhuman animals in their world and their interaction with humans, or simply recorded incidentally what they did in their writings. All are represented here.

Framing Classical Reception Studies : Different Perspectives on a Developing Field /

: Framing Classical Reception Studies contains a representative number of analytic and synthetic contributions by scholars from diverse parts of the field of Classical Reception Studies. Together, they afford a synoptic view and typology of an extremely large and continuously diversifying discipline. Attentive to questions such as what, by whom, in what contexts and to what ends Classics have functioned and are functioning in our culture, all contributors ask themselves from what conceptual or disciplinary frame they approach the reception of the cultures of classical Greek and Roman antiquity. Within this questioning format, the book also contains suggestions for future agendas of research, and forcefully argues for the political, cultural and cognitive relevance of classical receptions in the Academy.

Mary Magdalene : Iconographic studies from the Middle ages to the Baroque /

: Mary Magdalene, Iconographic Studies from the Middle Ages to the Baroque examines the iconographic inventions in Magdalene imagery and the contextual factors that shaped her representation in visual art from the fourteenth to the seventeenth centuries. Unique to other saints in the medieval lexicon, images of Mary Magdalene were altered over time to satisfy the changing needs of her patrons as well as her audience. By shedding light on the relationship between the Magdalene and her patrons, both corporate and private, as well as the religious institutions and regions where her imagery is found, this anthology reveals the flexibility of the Magdalene's character in art and, in essence, the reinvention of her iconography from one generation to the next.

Meister Eckhart is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating medieval authors, who has appealed to a wide audience across the centuries. At the same time, the extraordinary universality and openness of his mystical-theological approach has repeatedly made him the object of all kinds of ideological projections and misinterpretations. The present volume examines the reception of Eckhart's mysticism in the era of National Socialism. The main focus is put on the different and sometimes contradictory attempts to present Eckhart as the founder of "Germanic Christianity" or "German faith" and as a visceral opponent of both Judaism and the Catholic Church.
This volume analyses the various forms of ideological instrumentalization Meister Eckhart's mysticism has been subject to during the era of National Socialism.
