The People of the Song : Biblical Poetry, Translation, and the Reception of Moses Mendelssohn in the Berlin Haskalah /

: When, in 1783, Moses Mendelssohn's German Psalms translation was published in Berlin, forward-thinking ideologues of Jewish cultural revival rendered its translator a redeemer of the songs of King David from exilic desolation. The People of the Song is the first study to examine Mendelssohn's conception of biblical Hebrew poetry as a particular manifestation of Judaism's universalism. The author traces how it helped forge a new foundational narrative that imagined Israel's covenant with God in sacred song, not in revealed law, portrayed King David as a bard, not a military leader, and envisioned national redemption of modern Jews as an aesthetic, not a political, revival.

German Moravian missionaries in the British colony of Victoria, Australia, 1848-1908 : influential strangers /

: Focusing on the six decades that German Moravian missionaries worked in the British colony of Victoria, Australia, this book enriches understanding of colonial politics and the role of the non-British other in manipulating practice and policy in foreign realms. Central to the transnational nature of the book are questions of identity and of how individuals, and the organisations they worked for, can be seen as both colluders and opposers within nation-state borders and politics. It analyses the ways in which the Moravian missionaries navigated competing agendas within the colonial setting, especially those that impacted on their sense of personal vocation, their practices of conversion, and their understandings of the indigenous non-Christian peoples in the settler society of Victoria.

Fertility, Wealth, and Politics in Three Southwest German Villages, 1650-1900 /

: The book traces the precocious diffusion of family limitation in Grafenhausen bei Lahr, Kappel am Rhein, and Rust, using thousands of reconstituted family histories in local genealogies ( Ortssippenbücher ), as well as economic and political data from municipal and provincial archives. Graphs, tables, and maps document the fertility transition on the densely populated Rhine plain. A new measure of the percentage of couples practising family limitation is applied. The account highlights the rôles of women as landholders under traditional partible inheritance and as workers in the cigar factories of the late 1800s. Both circumstances increased fertility, even as contraception spread along the networks of solidarity forged by economic and political independence.

Inertia, Resistance, Revolution : Hegel and the Logic of History /

: Why are people sometimes unable to change, even if they want to? Why is it so difficult to change political institutions, or to abandon outdated ways of thinking? This book suggests that we can understand the phenomenon of resistance to change in individuals and institutions by returning to Hegel, one of the most influential philosophers of historical and political change. Hegel exposes the paradox inherent in the notion of resistance: on the one hand, resistance to change is necessary to allow for identity and survival in a changing world, and to make stable societies possible; on the other hand, resistance to change also causes obsolete, irrational or repressive ideas and institutions to persist. This book not only presents a theory of inertia, a concept of great importance for philosophy and political theory, but also offers a wide-ranging interpretation of Hegel's philosophy, discussing his views on the will and on habits, on obsolete institutions and revolutionary transformations.

Ethnography from the mission field : the Hoffmann Collection of Cultural Knowledge /

: In Ethnography from the Mission Field: The Hoffmann Collection of Cultural Knowledge Joubert and others offer a translated and annotated edition of the 24 ethnographic articles by missionary Carl Hoffmann and his local interlocutors published between the years 1913 and 1958. The edition is introduced by a historic contextualisation using a cultural historical approach to analyse the contexts in which Hoffmann's ethnographic texts were produced. Making use of historical material and Hoffmann's own words from personal diaries and letters, the authors convincingly draw the attention to the discursive context in which the texts annotated in this book had been compiled. In a concluding chapter the book traces the captivating developments of the orthography of Northern Sotho through Hoffmann's texts over almost half a century. Brill has made the documentary film "A Journey into the Life of a Mission-Ethnographer" which is interlinked with this book available online via its online channels. To access it please click here . The digital database of the "Hoffmann Collection of Cultural Knowledge" (HC-CK) can be accessed by clicking here . It is an amalgamation of digital scans, images and video footage relating to missionary Carl Hoffmann's work and life on various mission stations, made available by the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin.
: Translation from German to English by Klaudia Ringelmann.
"The texts that were documented by Hoffmann and which are the focus of our research in this publication, were written in the Semamabolo (Mamabolo) dialect, which is close to the standardised form [of Northern Sotho]. To make these texts more accessible they have been rendered in the current official orthography in accordance with the Northern Sotho Terminology and Orthography rules No. 4 (Department of Education and Training 1988)."--Chapter 29. : 1 online resource (xxi, 1145 pages) : illustrations (some color), maps. : Includes bibliographical references (p. 1121-1127) and indexes. : 9789004297722 : Available to subscribing member institutions only.

Giordano Bruno : an introduction /

: Giordano Bruno (1548-1600) was a philosopher in his own right. However, he was famous through the centuries due to his execution as a heretic. His pronouncements against teachings of the Catholic Church, his defence of the cosmology of Nicholas Copernicus, and his provocative personality, all this made him a paradigmatic figure of modernity. Bruno's way of philosophizing is not looking for outright solutions but rather for the depth of the problems; he knows his predecessors and their strategies as well as their weaknesses, which he exposes satirically. This introduction helps to identify the original thought of Bruno who proudly said about himself: "Philosophy is my profession!" His major achievements concern the creativity of the human mind studied through the theory of memory, the infinity of the world, and the discovery of atomism for modernity. He never held a permanent office within or without the academic world. Therefore, the way of thinking of this "Knight Errant of Philosophy" will be presented along the stations of his journey through Western Europe.

International influences and Baptist mission in West Cameroon : German-American missionary endeavor under international mandate and British colonialism /

: This study presents a history, based on original archival and primary source material, of the Baptist mission educational situation of Cameroon province from 1922 to 1945. The provisions of the League of Nations' mandate, under which Great Britain administered the province in this period, included 'complete freedom of conscience and the free exercise of all forms of worship', yet from the beginning of the Mandate clear tensions existed. The missions desired education to serve evangelical purposes, while the colonial government strove for a uniform adaptionist program, suited to European perceptions of the abilities, traditions and local conditions of the African peoples. The work relates thus to a number of themes: European colonialism; the Mandate system; international theories of education; a comparison of British, American and German influences; cross-cultural mission work; and the personal contributions of three particular missionaries: Bender, Gebauer and Dunger.
