Majmūʿa-yi āthār-i ḥājjī ʿAbdallāh Khān Qarāgūzlū Amīr Niẓām-i Hamadānī /

In Persia under the Qajars (1210-1344/1796-1925) tribal leaders played an important role; at the regional level and also in matters of state. An illustrative example is ʿAbdallāh Khān Qarāgūzlū (d. 1334/1916), a prominent member of the Turkish Qarāgūzlū tribe of Hamadan. Qarāgūzlū, who died of a stroke age sixty, had a colourful life. Governor of the district of Astarābād at only 26 years of age, he had a career in which he served in a wide range of military and administrative positions, both regionally and nationally. But like so many others, he was certainly not without blemish: emprisoned on accusations of rebellion, rejected by parliament as governor of Kurdistan on charges of embezzlement and despotism in an earlier office in Shiraz, and an incapable Minister of Finance whose policies were often determined by taking an omen from his prayer beads. In the present collection of notes and reports, the tone is of course more positive.

Grounded Identities: Territory and Belonging in the Medieval and Early Modern Middle East and Mediterranean is a collection of essays on attachment to specific lands including Kurdistan, Andalusia and the Maghrib, and geographical Syria in the pre-modern Islamicate world. Together these essays put a premium on the affective and cultural dimensions of such attachments, fluctuations in the meaning and significance of lands in the face of historical transformations and, at the same time, the real and persistent qualities of lands and human attachments to them over long periods of time. Muntakhab-i risālāt-i Ṣafāʾ al-Ḥaqq /

Ṣafāʾ al-Ḥaqq (1879-1962) is the artist's name of an Iranian Kurd whose family had moved from Kurdistan to Hamadan when he was still a child. His father was a respected businessman and a follower of the ideas of Shaykh Aḥmad Aḥsāʾī (d. 1241/1826). Though well-educated, having studied traditional and herbal medicine and animal husbandry, as an adolescent Ṣafāʾ al-Haqq spent a lot of time in his father's business in the bazaar. Due to his convictions, his father lost his livelyhood and Ṣafāʾ al-Ḥaqq started travelling. He spent several years in India, where he worked in a British hospital in Bombay. He then returned to Hamadan, where he settled as a physician. As a poet Ṣafāʾ al-Ḥaqq wrote in the Hindī style. He was an amateur musicologist as well as an accomplished calligrapher. This volume contains his autobiography, a treatise on animal husbandry, and two further treatises on various aspects of Shaykhism and music.
