Although it was labeled an anti-epic for trumping the celebratory scope of the Roman national epos, Lucan's Bellum Civile is a hymn to lost republican liberty composed under Nero's tyrannical empire. Lucan lost his life in a foiled conspiracy to replace the emperor, but his poem survived the wreckage of antiquity and enjoyed uninterrupted readership. The present collection samples the most current approaches to Lucan's poem, its themes, its dialogue with other texts, its reception in medieval and early modern literature, and its relevance to audiences of all times.

This monograph examines one specific hoard horizon, which is connected to the Mongol invasion of Hungary (1241-42). With this catastrophic event, the historical context is both well-known and much discussed by contemporaries and modern scholars. This opportunity to examine material connected to a sole event, but across a broad spectrum of geographical space and social class, is unique for hoard horizons in Hungary, and, for that matter, in Europe. Though this study focuses on hoards connected to the Mongol invasion, it is also relevant beyond this specific context. The work addresses issues concerning hoard finds and material culture, and examines how finds are related when found in different contexts (a hoard, grave, or settlement feature), thus the questions raised and conclusions reached are important for other medieval hoard finds.

Evil Egyptian Scripts comprises twenty-nine articles by colleagues and friends in honour of Koenraad Donker van Heel, University Lecturer in demotic papyrology at the Leiden Papyrological Institute. Donker van Heel's research interests embrace the study of demotic and hieratic texts and the legal and social history and economy of ancient Egypt, but he is especially renowned as a specialist in abnormal hieratic, widely regarded as the most difficult of all Egyptian scripts. His numerous textual editions and discussions of problematic readings have been enormously influential and contributed to an ever-increasing recognition of the importance of abnormal hieratic for the study of Egypt in the Third Intermediate and Late Periods. The aim of this volume is to study Silius' poem as an important step in the development of the Roman historical epic tradition. The Punica is analyzed as transitional segment between the beginnings of Roman literature in the Republican age (Naevius and Ennius) and Claudian's panegyrical epic in late antiquity, shedding light on its 'inclusiveness' and its peculiar, internal dialectic between antiquarian taste and problematic actualization. This is an innovative attempt to connect epic poems and authors belonging to different ages, to frame the development of the literary genre, according to its specific aims and interests throughout the centuries.
