The acts of Thomas : introduction, text, and commentary /

This is the second edition of a book published as long ago as 1962. The at that time relatively young Dr. A.F.J. Klijn was brought up in the school of W.C. van Unnik and G. Quispel, both in Utrecht. In his book about the Acts of Thomas he tried to demonstrate that this work cannot be reckoned among the Gnostic writings but belongs to the early Syriac or rather Eastern Christian tradition. In the last decades much has been written about Syriac Christianity, which made it necessary to rewrite the original introduction of this book. The commentary has mainly been left as it was, although many additions have been made to its great number of valuable references.

Iamblichus and the foundations of late platonism /

Iamblichus of Chalcis (c. 240-c. 325 C.E.), successor to Plotinus and Porphyry, gave new life to Neoplatonism with his many philosophical and religious refinements. Once regarded as a religio-magical quack, Iamblichus is now seen as a philosophical innovator who harmonized not only Platonic philosophy with religious ritual but also Platonism with the ancient philosophical and religious tradition. Building on recent scholarship on Iamblichean philosophy, the ten papers in this volume explore various aspects of Iamblichus' oeuvre. These papers help show that Iamblichus re-invented Neoplatonism and made it the major school of philosophy for centuries after his death.

In the western world, oriental manuscript collections are now mostly kept at universities, institutes and in national or regional libraries. Yet many of these collections were jumpstarted with the acquisition or donation of some private collection. An example is the oriental collection at Leiden University Library, which started with a legacy of around 60 oriental manuscripts by J.J. Scaliger in 1609. In fact, private collectors have always enriched library collections until this very day. The shelf marks of the oriental manuscripts in almost every major collection in the western world bear testimony to this. Dr Caro Minasian (d. 1973) was an Iranian physician and a passionate collector of oriental manuscripts. In 1968 he sold the greater part of his collection to UCLA (1507 items). In 1972 he bequeathed the remainder (959 titles) to the Ferdowsi library of Wadham College, University of Oxford. This Persian catalogue contains the first detailed description of the entire Minasian collection.

"Der Tempel der Göttin Hathor in Dendara besitzt zahlreiche kleinere Räume und Kapellen, die durch architektonisch eigens hervorgehobene Zugänge miteinander verbunden, aber auch voneinander abgetrennt sind. Diese wie der Rest des Tempels beschrifteten Zugänge geben sowohl Auskunft über die theologische Gesamtkonzeption des Kultbaus als auch über die jeweils unterschiedliche Bestimmung der einzelnen Räume. In den hieroglyphischen Texten der Türen werden Hathor und andere in Dendara verehrte Gottheiten in Hymnen gepriesen und verschiedene Aspekte der Theologie des Heiligtums abgehandelt. 0Jan Tattkos Studie widmet sich diesen Texten auf den Türen. Analysiert werden die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Dekoration und Architektur: Es wird aufgezeigt, wie durch die Redaktion und Neukonzeption von Textsequenzen und Einzelaussagen aus unterschiedlichen Versatzstücken kohärente Textkompositionen entstanden sind, die an ihren Anbringungsort adaptiert wurden. Somit stehen vor allem Intertextualität und die Frage nach einem einheitlichen Konzept der Inschriften im Fokus der Untersuchung. Dazu werden die Türinschriften inhaltlich und sprachstilistisch untersucht und mit der umliegenden Dekoration verglichen. Die Untersuchung gibt nicht nur Einblicke in den Gestaltungswillen der ägyptischen Priester und in die Dekorationsplanung eines späten ägyptischen Tempels, sondern liefert durch die inhaltliche Analyse der Texte gleichzeitig einen Überblick über die Theologie des Heiligtums in Dendara."--
