Ouvrage publié à l'occasion de l'exposition présentée à l'Institut du monde arabe, Paris, du 23 janvier au 4 mai 2014. Il y a tout juste quatre-vingts ans, à peine une vie d'homme, André Parrot mettait au jour en Syrie une petite statue avec une inscription sur l'épaule qui lui révélait le nom ancien de la ville, Mari, dont la fouille débutait. À regarder les photographies en noir et blanc prises alors, on peut aisément concevoir l'émotion qu'il en ressentit. Cependant, loin de la vision romantique de l'archéologue-héros développée depuis par un certain cinéma, les photographies des premières campagnes conduites sur le site montrent un quotidien différent, soucieux d'une vision à la fois large des vestiges dans leur environnement, grâce aux photos aériennes prises avec le concours de l'armée, et au plus près du sol d'où sont, patiemment, excavés les fondations de cet ensemble urbain ainsi qu'un abondant matériel, catalogué avec soin, soir après soir.

Conquête ottomane de l'Égypte (1517) is the first collective work that deals with Selīm Ist's crushing victory over the Mamluks, which made the Ottoman sultanate into the sole remaining Muslim power in the eastern Mediterranean, and reduced Egypt to the rank of a province. The book offers new insights into this major event by using a wide range of Ottoman and Arabic as well as Western sources. These essays in French and English collected by Benjamin Lellouch and Nicolas Michel examine to what extent the Ottoman conquest altered the structures of Egyptian society, power relations, literature, arts and material culture. They explore both its backgrounds and geopolitical aftermath, and reconstruct its echoes - loud at first, then gradually fading out - in the Middle East, Italy, and the Mediterranean.

Cicero's dialogue Brutus offers a history of Roman eloquence from its origins and Greek roots up to the time of the work's composition (46 BC) in the late Republic. However, scholarly discourse has frequently remained isolated. Focusing on both the city and its place in the wider region, the collection examines trade guilds and Christian settlement in Aleppo, Turkmen and Bedouin tribes in Aleppo's interior, international trade and the establishment of an Ottoman commercial tribunal in the Tanzimat period, Aleppo and the rise of the millet system, the Belgian consular presence, Sufi networks in the province of Aleppo, the countryside of Antioch under the Egyptian occupation, and the urban revolt of 1850.
