Justification by faith : the origin and development of a central Pauline theme /

: This study offers a fresh analysis of the place which "justification by faith" held in Paul's life and thought. In distinction from past attempts to define "justification" in relation to a logical "center", the investigation proceeds by assessing the relationship between this theme and two significant points in Paul's career: his conversion and his letter to Rome. The first chapter surveys a number of interpreters of Paul from William Wrede through E.P. Sanders. In an attempt to overcome the deficiencies of earlier proposals, the work then explores the soteriology of two early Jewish writings proximate to Paul, 1QS and Pss. Sol. Paul's references to his preconversion life reveal a connection between these forms of Judaism and that which Paul knew, making it likely that within a short time after his conversion Paul's soteriology underwent a radical change involving his adoption of ideas inherent to his later arguments on "justification by faith". Paul's aim in writing to Rome discloses that he came to regard "justification" as indispensable to his Gospel and relevant to issues beyond Jew-Gentile relations. This research challenges the "new perspective on Paul" (Dunn) while providing a historical and theological description of Paul's understanding of "justification by faith."

Hoards, grave goods, jewellery : objects in hoards and in burial contexts during the Mongol invasion of Central-Eastern Europe /

: This monograph examines one specific hoard horizon, which is connected to the Mongol invasion of Hungary (1241-42). With this catastrophic event, the historical context is both well-known and much discussed by contemporaries and modern scholars. This opportunity to examine material connected to a sole event, but across a broad spectrum of geographical space and social class, is unique for hoard horizons in Hungary, and, for that matter, in Europe. Though this study focuses on hoards connected to the Mongol invasion, it is also relevant beyond this specific context. The work addresses issues concerning hoard finds and material culture, and examines how finds are related when found in different contexts (a hoard, grave, or settlement feature), thus the questions raised and conclusions reached are important for other medieval hoard finds.

Roman pottery in the Near East : local production and regional trade : proceedings of the Round Table held in Berlin, 19-20 February 2010 /

: Discussions and scientific exchange are crucial for the advancement of a young discipline such as the study of Roman pottery in the Near East. Therefore, in addition to large conferences such as the 'Late Roman Coarse Ware Conference' (LRCW) where the Near East plays only a marginal role, an international workshop with 20 participants dedicated solely to the study of Roman common ware pottery in the Near East was held in Berlin on 18th and 19th February 2010. The goal of this workshop was to provide researchers actively engaged in the study of Roman common wares the possibility to meet and discuss the current state of research as well as questions and problems they are facing with their material. This volume presents 17 papers from this event.

Evil Egyptian Scripts : Abnormal Hieratic, Demotic and Hieratic Texts and Studies in Honour of Koenraad Donker van Heel /

: Evil Egyptian Scripts comprises twenty-nine articles by colleagues and friends in honour of Koenraad Donker van Heel, University Lecturer in demotic papyrology at the Leiden Papyrological Institute. Donker van Heel's research interests embrace the study of demotic and hieratic texts and the legal and social history and economy of ancient Egypt, but he is especially renowned as a specialist in abnormal hieratic, widely regarded as the most difficult of all Egyptian scripts. His numerous textual editions and discussions of problematic readings have been enormously influential and contributed to an ever-increasing recognition of the importance of abnormal hieratic for the study of Egypt in the Third Intermediate and Late Periods. The articles in Evil Egyptian Scripts include editions of abnormal hieratic, demotic and hieratic texts, reading problems, discussions of legal, religious and socio-economic issues and onomastic studies. The timespan of the contributions ranges from New Kingdom Deir el-Medina, through the Third Intermediate and Late Periods and into Graeco-Roman Egypt. The volume is profusely illustrated with many previously unpublished images and supplied with detailed indices.
