The Natuurkundige Commissie in the Netherlands Indies (1820-1850) /

The Natuurkundige Commissie in the Netherlands Indies was one of the largest state-sponsored colonial collecting endeavours of the early nineteenth-century world. As a result, the newly founded 's Rijks Museum van Natuurlijke Historie (present-day Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden) was filled with countless specimens. The Commissie consisted of thirty naturalists and was active for thirty years (1820-1850). This book shows how its stakeholders had different objectives that evolved over time: what started as a collection vehicle to showcase the 'glory' of the Dutch colonial empire became a useful surveying tool for the Indies government. This volume is the first detailed study of the Commissie in English. It tells the story of naturalists from the Netherlands, France, and German-speaking lands and of countless indigenous people working alongside the Commissie as knowledge brokers, hunters, preparators, and porters. This long overlooked indigenous contribution to European knowledge was both substantial and fundamental.

Until recently the Philippines were hardly known in the Netherlands. In academic circles the focus was on Indonesia, and publications on the Philippine part of the Malay archipelago tended to be inspired by matters of economy and state in the former Netherlands East Indies. The 1970s and 1980s showed a substantial broadening of scope and increase in research as well as popular interest in the Philippines, as is evidenced by the large majority of the 349 titles mentioned and annotated in this publication. Many early publications contain interesting information and views as well, however. Pre-war authors who are mainly known for their work on Indonesia, such as Valentijn, Van Hoëvell, Kern, Abendanon, E.F.E. Douwes Dekker, Van Vollenhoven, Van Mook, and Holleman, at one or more stages of their careers also devoted attention to the Philippines. The primary aim of this bibliography is to offer the international and Filipino scholarly public access to articles and books written by Dutch authors on the history, sociology, anthropology and to a lesser extent the geography, languages, economy, and culture of the Philippines. About two hundred of them appeared in the Dutch language. The bibliography proper is preceded by an introduction on the history of relation between the Philippines and the Netherlands and the Netherlands Indies and on shifts in the subjects of Dutch scholarly research as well as popular interest. Access to the titles is facilitated by a geographical and a subject index.

The Hadhrami diaspora in Southeast Asia : identity maintenance or assimilation? /

This volume originates from the proceedings of an international conference convened by the Department of History and Civilization, International Islamic University Malaysia, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Yemen, in Kuala Lumpur, from 26 to 28 August 2005. Twelve out of thirty-five papers presented at the conference have been reviewed, thoroughly revised and published in this volume. The introduction and the twelve chapters address the question of Hadhrami identity in Southeast Asia from various perspectives and investigate the patterns of Hadhrami interaction with diverse cultures, values and beliefs in the region. Special attention is paid to Hadhrami local and transnational politics, social stratification and integration, religio-social reform and journalism, as well as to economic dynamism and the cosmopolitan character of the Hadhrami societies in Southeast Asia.

The theme of this volume, state formation and mercantile evolution in Indonesia, has been the subject of historiographical debate for quite some time. In recent decades the focus of this debate has shifted from the external challenge posed by westerners towards the indigenous response to that challenge and towards local and regional situations, adding to the knowledge of state and state formation. Nine case studies on state formation in the Indonesian archipelago illustrate this approach. They deal with widely differing states, in different periods and regions, ranging from the twelfth-century Javanese state of Kadiri to the twentieth-century Netherlands Indies colonial state, and from Riau and West Borneo to Buton and the Seram Sea. Most of the studies concern states that came under the influence of the Dutch East Indies Company or its successor, the Dutch colonial state. The contributors to this volume are from Indonesia-Muhammad Gade Ismail, R.Z. Leirissa, Edi Sedyawati and Suhartono-and from the Netherlands-F. van Baardewijk, V.J.H. Houben, L.W. Nagtegaal, J.W. Schoorl and R. Vos. Based on in-depth bibliographical and archival research, these studies shed new light on historical situations and processes, thus contributing significantly to the knowledge of Indonesia's past and its historiography.
